All the tenants paid him the rent on regular basis. Before his death Dilip promised to transfer the land in the name of the tenants, but unfortunately he died without making any legal statement of the property. This paved way for a conflict between the family members of the deceased and the tenants. The latter filed a case in the court of Learned Executive Magistrate, Barackpore against the family members of Dilip Ghosh. On 22 nd July 2007 Jayanta Ghosh, the son of Dilip, two Counselors namely Shyamal and Puspendu along with 400 men came to demolish the houses of the tenants. Though messages were passed to the police they failed to assist the victims. The Chairman of the Municipality on the other hand claimed the land as their property, where the Municipality was going to establish a market. Arpita Saha got several injuries on her head. 9 families comprising of 40 members became houseless. Though police were informed of this they never arrived at the place to safeguard the victims. Subhas Mridha was one among the victim who belonged to the Scheduled Caste Community. Though the judgment fell in favour of the victims, nothing could stop the perpetrators from interfering into the life of the poor tenants, who were illiterate and knew not how to write even a complaint letter. FF Code : W.B. / MON (Gopen Chandra Sharma) District –Murshidabad / JAN-16/01/2008/Sl.NO- 152 Victim(s) : Subhas Saha Perpetrator(s) : 1) Sukumar Mondal 2) Subir Paul, OIC 3) Sailen Babu Location : Dayarampur, Jalangi Date of incident : 05/12/2007 Case Details: Victim Subhas Saha, aged 27, is a resident of Dayarampur village, falling under the jurisdiction of Jalangi Police Station. The victim lost his paddy field in the erosion caused by Padma River. Hence Subhas engaged is selling molasses of sugarcane, which he collected from the villagers. On 5 th Dec. 2007 Subhas and his brother Subrata Saha went to the house of Sukumar Mondal to collect molasses. The victim loaded the tins and found them leaking. Subhas requested Sukumar to replace them, but the latter refused. The victim was forced to take the tins, and ultimately beat up Subhas. The victim fell down, following which he was kicked on his chest with shod legs. Subhas was also struck on his face that his teeth were dislocated oozing out blood. Subrata informed the incident to the nearby Debipur Police. Subhas was hospitalized, and later a written complaint was send to Jalangi Police Station. The ASI abused the victim with filthy words before filing the same. The things of Subhas were in the custody of Sukumar. The police took no step to recover those things. FF Code : W.B. / MON (Susmita Roy Chowdhury) District –South 24parganas / APR-30.04.2008/ SL.NO- 155 Victim(s) : (Late) Subrata Bhattacharya Perpetrator(s) : 1) Hare Krishna Chanda, SP 2) Ananda Sarkar, IIC Location : Netaji Nagar, Jadavpur Date of incident : 13/04/2008 Case Details: Victim Subrata Bhattacharya was a resident of Netaji Nagar Colony, falling under the jurisdiction of Jadavpur Police Station. He was married to Champa Bhattacharya and both have a 6 year old daughter. The victim was working in a factory, which was closed down for several years, owing to which he ran a small business for earning their livelihood. Subrata’s wife started a tea shop on the main road which too didn’t run well. Thus the family was spending their days in penury. Subrata asked his wife to go back to her father’s house, assuring to call back after arranging money. On 12 th April 2008 the victim was alone at home, and the next day also the door of the house remained shut. When the people of the locality broke open the door of the house they found the victim hanging on a rope. The SI of Jadavpur Police Station came to the spot and send the body to Bangur Hospital for post mortem. On 14 th April 2008 the nephew of the victim went to receive the body of Subrata, but the body was changed. The police in the meantime forcibly tried to put responsibility of the changing the dead body upon the victim’s family but they denied. A suit was filed before the ACJM, Alipore Court on 16 th April 2008, stating the breach created by the police. Subrata died on 13 th April 2008 but the cremation of the body was not completed even after a long time. The widow of the deceased is now leading a life of starvation. He was a reputed teacher in the area, and was found missing from 9 th November 2007. The family members of Sudipta had suspicion on his neighbor, Partha Mukherjee, with whom the victim was last found talking. Accordingly his relatives lodged a missing diary and complaint against the suspect at Bishnupur Police Station on 16 th November 2007. A report was also made before the CID on 13 th November 2007. But the police were negligent about the case, despite repeated requests. The family of the victim went to the police station from 18 th November 2007 to 22 nd November 2007 urging the police to take action but in vain.
