victim was again called to the police station, and asked to inform the same to the Additional Officer In-<br />

Charge of the Missing Person Squad of Lalbazar. On 7 th September 2007 Sahanara met the Additional<br />

Officer and stated that Fatema was abducted and taken to Bihar, where she was sexually exploited. The<br />

officer stated that they can’t do anything about the case. The victims returned home not to approach the<br />

police hereafter. But Sahanara was often summoned to the police station by various officials, knowing<br />

that she was a widow.<br />

Victim Samail Mirdha, aged 35 was a resident of Paik Para Dakhin Para, falling within the jurisdiction of<br />

Bongaon Police Station. On 22 nd January 2008 the victim had gone to the bank for opening an account.<br />

He deposited Rs.1000 and opened the same. After that Samail went to Moti Ganj Hat for purchasing<br />

some articles. There he was beaten up mercilessly by Paltu Ghosh, Akshoy Das and Arun Mota,<br />

accusing him in a false case of bicycle theft, owing to which the victim passed away on the spot. In the<br />

meantime the family members of Samail started searching for him and informed Bongaon Police<br />

Station over phone. But the officer on duty cut the line stating they were busy. Thereafter the family started<br />

searching for him and came to know of his death from the local people. Akshoy confessed that they had<br />

beaten the victim, and denied giving the articles snatched from Samail. Then police arrived at the place,<br />

inspected the body and send it for post mortem. On 23 rd January 2008 a complaint was lodged at<br />

Bongaon Police Station. Akshoy Das surrendered before the police and applied for bail, which was<br />

rejected. Paltu Das had absconded in the meantime, and police took no measures to arrest him.<br />

Victim Sankar Choudhury, aged 24, was a bus conductor residing in Natun Bazar, falling under the<br />

jurisdiction of Singur Police Station. On 12 th February 2008 the victim had gone to <strong>watch</strong> the cultural<br />

programmes that were taking place in Singur. But he never returned home. The family members began<br />

searching for him in the morning but couldn’t find. Finally they filed a missing diary at Singur Police<br />
