The victim’s father Abdus Mondal gave Rs.23,000 and other valuable things as dowry. Ripon was unemployed at the time of marriage. Abdus helped him to establish a computer centre in Jalangi, providing him monetary assistance. But Ripon wasn’t satisfied and demanded more dowry. Sabina was subjected to continuous physical and mental torture. She had a year old son too. She was not allowed to go to her father’s house either. On 28 th January 2008 the victim was tortured to bring Rs.3,000, but she refused owing to Abdus’ poor economic condition. That day she was severely beaten that the victim set herself on fire at night while everybody were sleeping. Sabina was rushed to the hospital but expired on 16 th February 2008. Abdus had lodged complaints against his son-in-law at Jalangi Police Station on 30 th January 2008 and 17 th February 2008. The SI and CI of the station arrested one accused among them namely Nazmul Haque but released at once. Abdus visited Jalangi Police Station frequently but the OIC refused to give him the copy of the FIR. He was also threatened to be implicated in false cases, and stated that he was responsible for his daughter’s death. A case of unnatural death was filed on 16 th February 2008. Written complaints were send to the SP of Berhampore on 25 th February 2008 but in vain. Chowdhury, SI Location : Ultadanga, Kolkata Date of incident : 28/02/2008 Case Details: Victim Sahanara Bibi, aged 28, is a rag picker residing in Basanti Colony, falling under the jurisdiction of Ultadanga Police Station. Her husband is no more and the victim has a daughter named Fatema Khatun. During February 2007 Fatema was missing, following which a complaint was filed in Ultadanga Police Station. The missing person squad of Lalbazar started their search after the intervention of the human right organization. Then the case was transferred to Immoral Traffic Section, of Kolkata Police. concerned police station with her daughter to inform about Fatema’s return. On 6 th September 2007 the victim was again called to the police station, and asked to inform the same to the Additional Officer In- Charge of the Missing Person Squad of Lalbazar. On 7 th September 2007 Sahanara met the Additional Officer and stated that Fatema was abducted and taken to Bihar, where she was sexually exploited. The officer stated that they can’t do anything about the case. The victims returned home not to approach the police hereafter. But Sahanara was often summoned to the police station by various officials, knowing that she was a widow. FF Code : WB/MON (S. Mukhtar Ahamed)/ District–North 24 Parganas/FEB-12/02/2008/Sl.NO-108 Victim(s) : (Late) Samail Mirdha Perpetrator(s) : 1) IIC 2) Paltu Ghosh 3) Akshoy Das 4) Arun Mota Location : Moti Ganj Hat, Bongaon Date of incident : 22/01/2008 Case Details: Victim Samail Mirdha, aged 35 was a resident of Paik Para Dakhin Para, falling within the jurisdiction of Bongaon Police Station. On 22 nd January 2008 the victim had gone to the bank for opening an account. He deposited Rs.1000 and opened the same. After that Samail went to Moti Ganj Hat for purchasing some articles. There he was beaten up mercilessly by Paltu Ghosh, Akshoy Das and Arun Mota, accusing him in a false case of bicycle theft, owing to which the victim passed away on the spot. In the meantime the family members of Samail started searching for him and informed Bongaon Police Station over phone. But the officer on duty cut the line stating they were busy. Thereafter the family started searching for him and came to know of his death from the local people. Akshoy confessed that they had beaten the victim, and denied giving the articles snatched from Samail. Then police arrived at the place, inspected the body and send it for post mortem. On 23 rd January 2008 a complaint was lodged at Bongaon Police Station. Akshoy Das surrendered before the police and applied for bail, which was rejected. No. 72 Victim(s) : (Late) Sankar Choudhury Perpetrator(s) : OIC Location : Singur, Hooghly Date of incident : 16/02/2008 Case Details: Victim Sankar Choudhury, aged 24, was a bus conductor residing in Natun Bazar, falling under the jurisdiction of Singur Police Station. On 12 th February 2008 the victim had gone to watch the cultural programmes that were taking place in Singur. But he never returned home.
