Case Details:<br />

Victim Renuara Bibi, aged 41 is a resident of Pollagiri village, falling under the jurisdiction of Jalangi<br />

Police Station. Hafijul Seikh, the younger brother of Renuara is a farmer. On 9 th March 2008 Azabul<br />

Sardar was crossing the field of Hafijul with few cows, treading upon the crops. A hot altercation picked<br />

up between the victim and the perpetrator, the result of which Azabul beat Hafijul with a bamboo stick. On<br />

10 th March 2008 Renuara met Azabul and questioned him, owing to which the latter grew furious and<br />

beat the victim. He also abused her in the presence of other farmers. Azabul assaulted Renuara with a<br />

sharp weapon. Her right palm was injured oozing out blood. Renuara went to Raninagar Police Station<br />

but the officials just registered a general diary entry without filing a criminal case. On 11 th March 2008 Ali<br />

Mohammad Mollah, the son of Renuara was also attacked by the perpetrators to such an extent that he<br />

fell unconscious. The same day Renuara went to Raninagar Police Station along with her brother and<br />

son, but the OIC demanded Rs.500 as bribe to initiate action against the perpetrators. The victims<br />

returned home dejected.<br />

Case Details:<br />

Victim Rita Karmakar, aged 18 is a resident of Gurpara village. She had pre-marital relationship with<br />

Bikram Acharya (a) Bapi, S/o Bikash Acharjee of the same village. Both decided to get married but the<br />

boy’s father didn’t agree. During the month of November 2007, Bikash entered the house of the victim,<br />

scattered all the articles and beat up the whole family brutally. He kicked on the belly of Rita, with the<br />

intention of killing the baby in the womb, the result of which she had to abort the child. On 24 th November<br />

2007 Ritu went to lodge a complaint at Deganga Police Station, but the police remained negligent. Now<br />

the victim started telling everybody in the village about the matter, due to which Bikash came to her house<br />

once again with few strange men and raped her. Again police was silent over the issue. On 14 th<br />

February 2008 Ritu was summoned to the police station and detained the whole day under illegal<br />

custody. The next day she was taken to the court along with Bapi. A lady police threatened Ritu not to<br />

speak anything against the perpetrators in the court, or Bapi would never marry her. Thus a case was<br />

registered only against Bapi with charges of rape, and no case was filed against his father and the<br />

strange men who raped the victim.<br />
