Her husband is a home guard of the Circle Inspector Office at Canning. Pratima came to know that her in-laws set fire on her elder sister-in-law Chhaya Chakraborty. Rati Ranjan maintained illegal relationship with Jharna Chakraborty, who is another sister-in-law of the victim. Pratima was also tortured by her in-laws when she objected this relationship. They tried to cut her throat using a sharp weapon. They even forcibly tried to feed her with poison. Pratima’s brother-in-laws sexually harassed and abused her. After few years the victim’s husband deserted her leaving behind three children. Pratima lodged several complaints at Canning Police Station but the police never accepted her complaint. Now Pratima is spending her days in misery. Her husband has constructed a house at Naridana, where she is not permitted to stay. The victim has send written complaints by post to Canning Police Station and the Circle Inspector Office. She also send a complaint to the Sub Divisional Police Officer through registered post. Mukherjee, ASI : Kamarhati, Kolkata Date of incident : August 2007 – March 2008 Case Details: Victim Prosanta Mohanta, aged 51, is a watch repairer residing in Harisingh Deuri village, falling under the jurisdiction of Murshidabad Police Station. He has three sons and two daughters. The economic condition of the family is very poor. Prosanta’s second daughter Priti Biswas, aged 20, was given in marriage to Srimanta Biswas on 8 th August 2007. Though the groom’s family demanded no bribe Prosanta gave Rs.50,000 as cash, a bed worth Rs.10,000, an almarah worth Rs.4,000, gold ornaments and gifts worth Rs.10,000. At her in-laws house, Priti Biswas stayed alone, for her husband would return home from work only at night. He usually came drunk and beat her up, along with his brothers. The victim was mentally depressed and she was sent back home on 20 th August 2007 owing to her serious physical condition. During this time Priti had to undergo treatment, and her husband never turned out to see her. Following this she had to go back to her in-laws house with her mother for company. once again began torturing her in a closed room. The tape recorder was tuned high to suppress her shout of cry. Srimanta also abused his mother-in-law, who was witnessing all these things. Finally the victim returned to her father’s house the very next day. Though the village elders talked with Srimanta to take his wife back it turned to deaf ears. On 23 rd March 2008 Prosanta went to Murshidabad Police Station, but the ASI refused to accept the complaint, following which a written complaint was sent to the SP on 24 th March 2008. Now Priti is mentally upset and not in her right sense. FF Code : W.B./ MON (Amrita Rana)/ District- Howrah/ March-07/03/2008/Sl.No.-60 Victim(s) : Puja Barma Perpetrator(s) : 1) Mohan Choudhury 2) Police Location : Bally, Howrah Date of incident : 20/01/2008 Case Details: Victim Puja Barma, aged 12, D/o Ramnath Barma is a resident of Rajen Seth Lane, falling within the jurisdiction of Bally Police Station. Ramnath Sharma is residing as a tenant in the house of Mohan Choudhury for the past two and a half years. On 20 th January 2008 the younger daughter of Ramnath, namely Puja went to toilet. Then suddenly Mohan pulled her into his room, tied her mouth and raped her. After a long time her parents found her tied up in Mohan’s room. The same night they went to Bally Police Station for filing a complaint but the officials denied registering the same. After repeated requests finally a general diary entry was registered on 22 nd January 2008. After this the family of the victim was getting threats from Mohan. 15 days later police took initiative for Puja’s medical examination, the copy of which was not handed over to the victim. Mohan was charged intentionally under an attempt to murder case so as to lighten the gravity of the offense. Till date the accused has not been arrested and no initiative has been taken for proper investigation. FF Code : W.B. /MON (Tanushree Chakraborty)/ District-Kolkata/ July-31/07/2008/Sl NO-129 Victim(s) : 1) Raju Saha 2) Uttam Sardar Perpetrator(s) : 1) Raju Paswan 2) Niraj Gupta 3) Rajesh Prajapati 2) Jail Superintendent 3) Jail Warden 4) Police Escort Location : Fort William, Kolkata Date of incident : 12/06/2008 Case Details: Victim Raju Saha, aged 26, is an under trial prisoner, whose case is pending in the Court of Ld. Additional district and Sessions’ Judge (Fast Track). The victim is an accused in the said case. On 12 th June 2008 the victim was not produced in the court by the police on the ground that he was assaulted by three under trial prisoners, namely Raju Paswan, Niraj Gupta and Rajesh Prajapati. Raju Sahu was cut with a razor inside the prison van near Fort William, Kolkata, while they were going to the court. The victim sustained severe blood injury and was immediately admitted in the hospital. Except for the victim the other three were produced before the court. It was observed that the incident happened as a result of the dereliction of the duty of jail authority.
