Case Details:<br />

Victim Pratima Chakraborty was married to Rati Ranjan Chakraborty, of Kachukhali village, 25 years<br />

ago. Her husband is a home guard of the Circle Inspector Office at Canning. Pratima came to know that<br />

her in-laws set fire on her elder sister-in-law Chhaya Chakraborty. Rati Ranjan maintained illegal<br />

relationship with Jharna Chakraborty, who is another sister-in-law of the victim. Pratima was also<br />

tortured by her in-laws when she objected this relationship. They tried to cut her throat using a sharp<br />

weapon. They even forcibly tried to feed her with poison. Pratima’s brother-in-laws sexually harassed<br />

and abused her. After few years the victim’s husband deserted her leaving behind three children.<br />

Pratima lodged several complaints at Canning Police Station but the police never accepted her complaint.<br />

Now Pratima is spending her days in misery. Her husband has constructed a house at Naridana,<br />

where she is not permitted to stay. The victim has send written complaints by post to Canning Police<br />

Station and the Circle Inspector Office. She also send a complaint to the Sub Divisional Police Officer<br />

through registered post.<br />

Victim Prosanta Mohanta, aged 51, is a <strong>watch</strong> repairer residing in Harisingh Deuri village, falling under<br />

the jurisdiction of Murshidabad Police Station. He has three sons and two daughters. The economic<br />

condition of the family is very poor. Prosanta’s second daughter Priti Biswas, aged 20, was given in<br />

marriage to Srimanta Biswas on 8 th August 2007. Though the groom’s family demanded no bribe<br />

Prosanta gave Rs.50,000 as cash, a bed worth Rs.10,000, an almarah worth Rs.4,000, gold ornaments<br />

and gifts worth Rs.10,000. At her in-laws house, Priti Biswas stayed alone, for her husband would return<br />

home from work only at night. He usually came drunk and beat her up, along with his brothers. The<br />

victim was mentally depressed and she was sent back home on 20 th August 2007 owing to her serious<br />

physical condition. During this time Priti had to undergo treatment, and her husband never turned out to<br />

see her. Following this she had to go back to her in-laws house with her mother for company. Srimanta<br />
