But the same day, at night few people abruptly entered Pradip’s house and started beating all the above<br />

mentioned victims. They threw stones, pulled Pradip and his wife Usha outside, beat them with chopper<br />

buts and bamboo sticks. The elder son of the victim brought the police, and before they could arrive the<br />

perpetrators managed to escape. All the victims went to the local hospital, where they were denied<br />

admission without a note from the police. Usha went to Barasat Police Station for receiving the documents<br />

but she was harassed and driven away asking to bring a written requisition from the doctor. Usha again<br />

went to the police station where the officer got her signed in a blank paper. Following these things the<br />

victims returned home with just first aid.<br />

Case Details:<br />

Dayarampur village was affected during the erosion, and most of the families in the village were starving.<br />

Victim Prafulla Halder and 11 others were enticed by Dhananjay Sarkar, Partha Sarkar, and Sayan<br />

Mondal to work in Andaman and Nicobar Islands for a monthly salary of Rs.20,000. Thereby the<br />

victims were handed over to a private concern at Kolkata, at the rate of Rs.5,000 per victim. The<br />

concern in turn sold them to another concern at Andaman and Nicobar for a contract work for 11<br />

months. But the victims were not provided any food or work. They were given only half day’s meal.<br />

Mitali Halder, wife of Prafulla gained news of this over phone and informed the family members of other<br />

victims too. They all went to Jalangi Police Station on 13 th February 2008, and the next day police raided<br />

Dhananjay’s house and arrested him. But he was released by the SI after receiving a bribe of Rs.35,000,<br />

under the condition of bringing back the victims from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, but the perpetrator<br />

never kept his promise. On 15 th February 2008 Mitali and the others appeared before the SP of<br />

Murshidabad for rescuing the victims and arresting the perpetrators. The victims are still in the Islands,<br />

and it was revealed that they were engaged in building houses for the victims of Tsunami.<br />
