Narayan had lodged several general entries at Bantra Police Station but in vain. On 27 th November 2007 the brothers of the victim beat him up, owing to which he was hospitalized. Again on 16 th April 2008 he was attacked by his brothers and few henchmen. Narayan took shelter in a nearby police station, but the officials arrested him and filed the victim under a case, stating that he was indulged in torturing his mother and younger sister-in-law. On 17 th April 2008 Narayan was produced before the court and released under bail. On 13 th June 2007 and 3 rd December 2007 two cases were charged against the victims at Bantra Police Station. Though the victim lodged complaints with several authorities he got no justice. Munmun states that the perpetrators cut the electric line of their house and also removed the bathroom door. Many rich people hire the hall for various functions. The hall is situated in a narrow street, owing to which the people coming for a function or so would park their vehicles on the road, thereby blocking the way. The residents of the area consider this a nuisance, because the guests who come there often indulge in drinking and abusing the people with filthy words. They created much chaos and made lots of noises, thereby disturbing the people in the locality. Biswajit Banerjee, the owner of the building used to dump all the waste in the locality itself. The local people lodged complaints regarding this at Serampore Police Station on 12 th December 2007 but in vain. Complaints were also send to the SHRC, Polluting Control Board, District Magistrate and SDPO, but to no avail. On 13 th January 2008 a rally was organized by the CPI(M) at Brigrade Parade Ground, Kolkata. Most of the resident of the area attended the rally except the family of the victim, for his son Surjeet Singh was sick. family. The victim approached the police owing to which Somir Biswas, a local leader desired comprome. But the same day, at night few people abruptly entered Pradip’s house and started beating all the above mentioned victims. They threw stones, pulled Pradip and his wife Usha outside, beat them with chopper buts and bamboo sticks. The elder son of the victim brought the police, and before they could arrive the perpetrators managed to escape. All the victims went to the local hospital, where they were denied admission without a note from the police. Usha went to Barasat Police Station for receiving the documents but she was harassed and driven away asking to bring a written requisition from the doctor. Usha again went to the police station where the officer got her signed in a blank paper. Following these things the victims returned home with just first aid. Victim Prafulla Halder and 11 others were enticed by Dhananjay Sarkar, Partha Sarkar, and Sayan Mondal to work in Andaman and Nicobar Islands for a monthly salary of Rs.20,000. Thereby the victims were handed over to a private concern at Kolkata, at the rate of Rs.5,000 per victim. The concern in turn sold them to another concern at Andaman and Nicobar for a contract work for 11 months. But the victims were not provided any food or work. They were given only half day’s meal. Mitali Halder, wife of Prafulla gained news of this over phone and informed the family members of other victims too. They all went to Jalangi Police Station on 13 th February 2008, and the next day police raided Dhananjay’s house and arrested him. But he was released by the SI after receiving a bribe of Rs.35,000, under the condition of bringing back the victims from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, but the perpetrator never kept his promise. On 15 th February 2008 Mitali and the others appeared before the SP of Murshidabad for rescuing the victims and arresting the perpetrators.
