Date of incident : 17/03/2008
Case Details:
The above mentioned victims are students of Bongaon Dinbandhu College, falling under the jurisdiction
of Bongaon Police Station. On 17 th March 2008 the opposition students’ union (Trinamul Chhatra
Parishad) organized a demonstration at the college premises. They were going to meet the Principal
and submit a demand, stating reduction of fees for the first year students. As a part of their demonstration
they started distributing slogans. In the meantime, some students from the ruling student’s union (Students’
Federation of India) and few external members attacked the agitating students. The victims tried to
protect themselves and the Principal by locking the college gate, but the perpetrators managed to get
inside breaking open the lock. They started assaulting with hockey sticks and other weapons. When the
victims tried to approach Bongaon Police Station they were prevented by few miscreants. One victim
named Susanta Nath was badly injured and hospitalized. Finally a criminal case was filed at Bongaon
Police Station. Simultaneously another case was also registered at the instigation of the ruling students’
union. But nobody was arrested in this case. The college elections which was scheduled for 10 th April
2008 was postponed, because the SDO (Sub Divisional Officer) couldn’t deploy sufficient police force
on the day of election. This proves the negligence of the police in this matter and the miscreants are still
roaming about in the locality.
