Case Details:<br />
Victim Debu Malik, aged 48 is a resident of Singur village, falling under the jurisdiction of Singur Police<br />
Station. The victim had a friend named Shankar Choudhury who died on 18 th February 2008 under<br />
suspicious circumstances. Debu had gone to comfort the family, and at that time the Investigation Officer<br />
(IO) came to the house of the deceased and arrested the victim, against the complaint of Bholanath<br />
Chowdhury, brother of the deceased. The victim was locked up and detained him for two consecutive<br />
days, following which he was produced before the court on 22 nd February 2008. During the time Debu<br />
was detaine, he was not provided any food but was allowed to go home and eat. The police stated that<br />
the victim was arrested on grounds of suspicion and didn’t put his name in the FIR.<br />

Case Details:<br />
Victims Dhruba Biswas, Ujjal Biswas and Indrajit Biswas are residents of Sabri village in Bangladesh.<br />
The three had come into the Indian boundary to visit their maternal uncle on 7 th May 2007 but were<br />
caught by the BSF Officials at Angrail. A case was started against the three at Gaighata Police Station<br />
dated 8 th May 2007, and the next day produced before the ACJM Court, Bongaon. From there they<br />
were sent to judicial custody. Since the victims acknowledged their mistake they were sentenced to<br />
rigorous imprisonment for 60 days and a fine of Rs.500. Despite the completion of the period of detention<br />
the victims were not released from Bongaon Sub Jail. A writ petition was filed before the High Court on<br />
behalf of the victims. The Hon’ble Justice directed all the concerned authorities to push back the victims<br />
into Bangladesh, in his order dated 3 rd April 2008. But the order was not followed. Again a petition was<br />
filed against the perpetrators under the Contempt of Courts Act. On 11 th September 2008 the authorities<br />
of Bongaon Sub Jail handed over the victims to the custody of the BSF for deporting them into Bangladesh.<br />
