Her father is a daily wage labourer. The victim is the youngest among the four daughters in the family. She studied till 7 th standard and dropped out due to family constraints. Koushik Mondal, a resident of the same village enticed the victim assuring to marry her without dowry. He often took her to his house and send her back only in the evening. During such times, he humiliated her four times. He also threatened her not to disclose the matter or he wouldn’t marry her. Meanwhile Basanti’s father requested Koushik’s parents to solemnize the wedding at the earliest, for which he was threatened and the perpetrators demanded dowry, which the victim’s family couldn’t afford. In this situation Koushik and his parents assaulted Basanti and drove her out from their house. The panchayat also washed hands from the case as the victims approached the police. On 2 nd February 2008 the perpetrators came to the house of the victim and assaulted them once again. On 6 th February 2008 Sachin went to lodge a complaint at Gosaba Police Station but the OIC refused to get the complaint. The police were throughout negligent regarding the case. The perpetrators in the meantime threatened to gang rape Basanti. Sachin out of fear went to Kolkata and Basanti stayed in her relative’s house at Sonakhali. She worked in a factory and after retirement the victim constructed two rooms with her money and let it out for rent. Bela maintained her expenses and her younger son Ashoke Kumar depended upon the income of his mother. He always pressurized her and tried to confiscate the property. The victim underwent physical and mental torture in the hands of her own son. Bela lodged two diaries at Bally Police Station on 29 th November 2007 and 30 th November 2007. In fear the victim stayed in her elder brother’s house for three months. On 2 nd March 2008 Ashoke brought his mother back home. The next day Jayanta Nayak, son-in-law of Bela took her into a room, abused her with filthy words and beat her up brutally. The victim was grievously injured all over her body, and her mouth was bleeding profusely. After this Bela went to the police station and registered a general diary entry. The victim was later hospitalized. Despite the complaint lodged, police neither started investigation not took any action against the perpetrators. The victim is continuously under threats and pressure. The victim is a tenant for the past fifteen years under the land lordship of Harishchand Shaw, for a rent of Rs.70 per month. Suddenly the landlord stopped the issue of rent receipt. This Harishchand Shaw began to quarrel with the victim to vacate the house and often threatened him with the help of local hooligans. Unfortunately Harish died of heart attack on 26 th September 2007. After this his two sons namely Om Prakash and Pappu prevented Bharat’s family from using the toilet. They entered his house and beat up the members brutally. On 28 th September 2007 the victim went to Liluah Police Station but the police denied taking action. Due to extreme fear Bharat and his family went to his friend’s house for some days, and on return he found the house fastened with another lock, and the things inside missing. Though the matter was taken before the District Magistrate of Howrah on 3 rd January 2008 there was no change in the situation.
