Case Details:
Victim Aparna Bhowmick, aged 19, was a resident of Saptagram village, falling under the jurisdiction of
Nimta Police Station. The victim was married to Sayak Bhowmick on 24 th October 2007. Her marital life
was not happy for she was subjected to physical and mental torture, demanding dowry. On 9 th January
2008 the family members of Aparna were informed about her ill health. They rushed to see her hanging
from the roof. They noticed several marks of injury all over her body. Aparna was found in a room which
was locked from outside. Her hands were closed tightly. It was predicted that she should have been
murdered and hanged thereafter in order to color the incident. The body was forcefully removed by the
police before all the relatives could arrive. The mother-in-law of Aparna was first taken to the police
station and released immediately due to pressure from the local CPI(M) member. It came to light of late
that the victim had witnessed her mother-in-law and this leader indulge in illicit relations, which was the
reason behind her demise. The victim’s family went to Nimta Police Station to lodge complaint against
the in-laws but the SI forced the brother of Aparna to write down according to his dictate, stating that his
sister voluntarily committed suicide, and duly sign. When protested, the SI threatened to put them behind
the bars if they failed to oblige. A case was started and Sayak surrendered before Barrackpore Court,
but police failed to arrest the mother-in-law of the victim, and her accomplice Shayamal Chakraborty
who were culpably involved behind the death of Aparna.
