This post offers the opportunity for a Specialty Trainee to gain experience in a mainly community based Old<br />

Age Psychiatry service but fitting the job to their stage of development on the scheme. The core service is a<br />

multi-disciplinary community team. There has also been the development of an Early Detection and<br />

Intervention in Dementia service (EDI) under a newly appointed consultant Dr Deepak Sachdeva which is<br />

connected to the Community team. The area whilst primarily described as rural has a good road network and a<br />

population concentration in a few small towns and large villages. Thus apart from the memory clinic,<br />

assessment and treatment is largely by home visits though outpatient space is available if needed at<br />

Sherbourne House, Newton Abbot. However opportunities to work in inpatient settings, EDI service and<br />

prescription of cholinesterase inhibitors are available. The post could also offer the opportunity to act in the<br />

capacity of ‘Consultant’ in part of the patch enabling the Specialty Trainee at the end of their rotation to<br />

experience the demands of the future in a supervised way. Considerable flexibility is envisaged in the<br />

timetable to allow specific educational needs to be met. Experience with the Consultant being responsible for<br />

ECT is also possible. The Specialty Trainees have a major part in the educational sessions and audit in the<br />

locality.<br />

With recent reconfiguration and growing interagency working there are a number of avenues to gain<br />

experiences in service development, committee work and guideline development.<br />
