POST: TRAINER: EMPLOYING TRUST: TRAINING BASE: General Adult Psychiatry Dr Phil de Warren-Penny Devon Partnership NHS Trust The Cedars, Wonford House Hospital, Exeter JOB DESCRIPTION: Dr Phil de Warren-Penny is Consultant Psychiatrist for Mid Devon Urgent & Inpatient Care, relating to Community Team bases in Tiverton and Crediton, affording the trainee the opportunity of following patient’s transition between Crisis/Home Treatment and Inpatient services. The ST4-6 trainee will work with him in providing clinical, diagnostic and risk management of individuals admitted to the Cedars under his care and under the auspices of the Crisis/ Home Treatment Team; proactive liaison with multidisciplinary teams regarding individuals using services; undertaking Mental Health Act Assessments; the provision of reports for and attendance at Mental Health Review Tribunals and Managers’ Hearings (under supervision); chairing CPA and 117 meetings; chairing ward rounds; clinical supervision and training of junior doctors; and participation in the Consultant on-call rota. The St4-6 trainee will be encouraged to take an active part in Audit. As relatively newly appointed consultant, having trained in Peninsula Deanery as an ST4-6 in the aftermath of MTAS, Dr de Warren-Penny is well aware of the tensions placed on Higher Specialist Trainees, and the need to gain experience in a variety of domains outside the clinical for ARCP progression, gaining CCST, and obtaining a Consultant post. He has previously been the Chair of the Peninsula Psychiatry SpR/ST4-6 group, and Chair of the Regional Junior Doctor’s Committee for the BMA. There is significant opportunity for exposure to Management and Leadership activities both within the Urgent & Inpatient Care Governance structure, and with other activities Dr de Warren-Penny undertakes. At present he is involved in working groups for: Medicines Management regarding injectable prescribing and rapid tranquilisation; a review of Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards arrangements in the Trust with a view to developing an Improvement plan; Mental Health Act Committee for Devon Partnership. Trainee participation in these activities, and others as they develop, would be both encouraged and welcomed. He currently is Chair of the Local Negotiating Committee for Devon Partnership, and an Executive Member of the BMA Southwest Regional Council. Dr de Warren-Penny also undertakes medico-legal work independent from his role within Devon Partnership Trust. Whilst not a core part of the role of any trainee with him, opportunities for developing this as a special interest whilst a trainee (as he did) would be supported. The post is supported by a CT1 trainee covering the ward, providing the opportunity for both teaching and mentoring. Regular placements of 3 rd and 5 th year medical students from Peninsula Medical School also provide teaching opportunity. Full secretarial support is provided. The post holder has timetabled regular consultant supervision and access to an SpR office within Wonford House Hospital.
