Roles and responsibilities of the trainee<br />
To contribute to medical community and inpatient care of older people with mental illness in the <strong>West</strong> Penwith<br />
and Isles of Scilly region of Cornwall. Specific responsibilities can be agreed early in the post but the general<br />
aims for the trainee are<br />
to gain experience in assessment and management of older people with organic and functional mental<br />
illness<br />
to develop ability to work independently in conjunction with a community mental health team and<br />
inpatient unit<br />
to manage a portion of the consultant catchment area under supervision<br />
Core clinical work<br />
Assessment of early memory problems in a ‘memory clinic’ setting<br />
Assessment of new or complex cases referred by CMHT members<br />
Regular input to local dementia nursing and residential homes<br />
Inpatient care to a functional ward and dementia assessment ward based at Longreach House, Redruth<br />
(weekly ward round)<br />
Weekly CMHT meeting<br />
Location of post<br />
Primary work base is Penzance<br />
Areas covered include Penzance, St Ives, Marazion and St Just<br />
Inpatient work at Redruth<br />
<strong>Peninsula</strong>r Medical School facilities at Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro<br />
Other Opportunities<br />
Unique opportunity to work with a remote island community on the Scilly Isles and contribute to the<br />
development of services for this population<br />
Regular peer clinical meetings including quarterly sessions with a radiologist with special interest in<br />
dementia<br />
Academic activities<br />
Contribution to the weekly academic programme for junior trainees in Cornwall<br />
Participation in undergraduate training where possible<br />
Study leave and opportunities for research and audit sessions will be strongly supported<br />
Monthly county-wide grand round presentations<br />
Old Age Psychiatry management and clinical meetings<br />
Supervision<br />
Weekly consultant supervision is timetabled and made a priority.<br />
Intended learning Outcomes<br />
These will be agreed at the outset and achieved through a variety of clinical experience, formal and informal<br />
supervision and use of study leave, research and special interest sessions.<br />
