POST:
TRAINER:
EMPLOYING TRUST:
Old Age Psychiatry, Estuary House, Newton Abbot
Dr John Dunn
Devon Partnership NHS Trust
This post offers the opportunity for a Specialty Trainee to gain experience in a mainly community based Old
Age Psychiatry service but fitting the job to their stage of development on the scheme. The core service is a
multi-disciplinary community team. There has also been the development of an Early Detection and
Intervention in Dementia service (EDI) under a newly appointed consultant Dr Deepak Sachdeva which is
connected to the Community team. The area whilst primarily described as rural has a good road network and a
population concentration in a few small towns and large villages. Thus apart from the memory clinic,
assessment and treatment is largely by home visits though outpatient space is available if needed at
Sherbourne House, Newton Abbot. However opportunities to work in inpatient settings, EDI service and
prescription of cholinesterase inhibitors are available. The post could also offer the opportunity to act in the
capacity of ‘Consultant’ in part of the patch enabling the Specialty Trainee at the end of their rotation to
experience the demands of the future in a supervised way. Considerable flexibility is envisaged in the
timetable to allow specific educational needs to be met. Experience with the Consultant being responsible for
ECT is also possible. The Specialty Trainees have a major part in the educational sessions and audit in the
locality.
With recent reconfiguration and growing interagency working there are a number of avenues to gain
experiences in service development, committee work and guideline development.
