1. Apologies:
Susie Bates
2. Minutes:
Taken as read
3. Matters Arising:
ARCPs: The dates for ARCP’s will be agreed at least 12
months in advance and dates published on the website. Trainees will be
notified at least 12 weeks in advance. Trainees will now be required to
submit all paperwork necessary directly to the relevant TPD, one Month
in advance. All assessments on eportfolio will also have to be
completed one month in advance.
4. Training for Trainers & Supervisors:
All were aware of the mandatory training requirements recently
introduced. RW commented that the extra training will require much
more time out and this may be difficult to obtain from the Trust. The
courses run on a 3 yr rotating basis and if already competed at a local
1

level then there is no need to duplicate. Details of any course should be
sent to Tina Oxland who will keep a record.
It is an essential requirement for consultants interviewing that Equality &
Diversity training has been completed, this is on a rolling 3 year basis.
5. Examination Passes:
6. SWOT:
Greg Pearson has passed Part 1
Tom Smith-Walker, Hadi Haerizadeh & Alison Richardson have
completed their Part 2 exams.
JA reported that the SWOT days for 2011 are not quite finalised. These
are available on the Severn Deanery website.
He commented that the Peninsula needs to have a greater proportion of
the days locally. There are currently no days covering Paediatrics or
Forensic training.
The capacity for extra log book days was discussed and it was agreed
that RS will approach a colleague regarding putting on days locally to
cover Paeds & forensics. JA asked BPJ for his support in organising the
SWOT days locally, BPJ agreed to act as Education Officer and senior
support.
Action:
RS to contact her colleague in relation to providing forensic
& paediatric SWOT days.
7. USS Training & Courses:
RW proposed that training course could run on a rolling 2 year basis and
would consist of 3 theory based modules; 1- Basic Physics; 2-
Obstetrics & Normal anatomy; 3- pelvic anatomy and pregnancy &
problems of early pregnancy.
NS had suggested that trainees could use a week of their study leave
budget to pay for the provision of a sonographer to run an extra
ultrasound clinic, which would allow time to train. RS confirms that
PHNT may be able to accommodate this kind of training on behalf of
trusts that cannot. It was discussed that this training should be targeted
at the ST1-2’s as it is believed that the RCOG will be requiring these
competences by ST2.
Action:
RW to source prices for the hire of a sonographer for 1 week.
RW & MT to discuss dates for 2011.
SB to look into North Devon’s capability for provision of this
course.
RW to contact Truro to discuss their capacity.
8. Update on bullying, dealing with issues & performance
management:
Discussed at the ARCP’s
2

9.
Management of Failing Trainees:
There was discussion around collating a flow diagram of performance
management for problem trainees. RS circulated a performance record
and asked for comment.
Action:
RS to circulate the performance record and all to make any
additions, comments etc and return to RS
10. OOPE:
Discussed at ARCP’s.
11. Recruitment:
There are 6 ST1 posts, 1 ST2 & 1 ST3 posts advertised for recruitment
2011. The interviews will be held on 8 th February 2011 at the
Postgraduate Centre, Exeter. There will be 2 panels and 12 consultants
are needed to assist on the day.
The peninsula has just been awarded a nationally appointed Advanced
Laparoscopic training slot for Truro. It will be a 12 month OOPT
opportunity for trainees holding an NT appointed by a national
competition.
.
12.
Update on ATSM’s:
To be discussed at the next meeting as Miss Bates unable to attend
13.
School Finances:
NM reported that there is £4k available within the School Budget. NM
informed the group of the innovation fund and RW noted that he was
currently looking at a vaginal scan simulator for trainees. There was also
discussion around providing trainees with the StratOG packages for
trainees once they have passed their part 1 exam MRCOG.
It was clarified that consultants who attend school meetings should
initially claim expenses from their trust and the trust will in turn bill the
deanery for these.
Action:
RW & NM to liaise regarding the simulation equipment,
NR to liaise with RCOG regarding StratOG packages.
All with Innovation Fund bid ideas to forward to NM at the
deanery.
