Training in Interventional Radiology (IR) will follow the new Royal College of Radiologists
(RCR) 2010 curriculum (see RCR website).
Successful applicants will be required to formally declare to the RCR that they are
following the 2010 instead of the 2007 curriculum (see RCR website), will be required to
use the RCR e-portfolio and engage fully in the use of work place based assessments
(WBPAs). Applicants are advised to take particular note of the standards for satisfactory
progression at ARCP on page 104 of the RCR 2010 subspecialty training curriculum for
IR.
Successful applicants will have spent the first three years of training (ST 1-3) focusing on
acquiring general radiological competencies at the same time as acquiring core
interventional skills. Appointment will be dependent on satisfactory references, passing all
the modules of the FRCR IIa exam and an ARCP 1 outcome at the end of ST3. ST 4-6 will
concentrate on developing advanced interventional competencies at the same time as
maintaining core competencies in general radiology. Subspecialty trainees in IR will be
required to sit the FRCR IIb exam in ST4.
As the subspecialty training curriculum in IR is a three year programme IR trainees will be
required to defer their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) date accordingly.
Dependent on satisfactory progression at ARCP, the SW Peninsula Radiology Training
Scheme training programme in IR will lead to the award of a CCT in Clinical Radiology
with Interventional Radiology sub-specialisation.
Subspecialty trainees in IR will spend 9 months of each training year in one of the clinical
departments on the scheme (the clinical block). During the clinical block study days are
banked and taken as a block for the remaining 3 months of the year based at the
Radiology Training Academy in Plymouth (the academy block). During the academy block
in ST 4-6 trainees may undertake placements at centres outside the training scheme
(external placements). External placements are subject to educational approval. Trainees
in IR may wish to undertake a post-CCT fellowship. The scheme has strong links with
centres in Australia and Canada.
The Academy environment allows ample time to become involved in research and audit
activity. Trainees are also encouraged to pursue further qualifications with many
undertaking Postgraduate Certificates of Medical Education or Management. There is also
a local radiology M.D. programme and ultrasound fellowship based in Plymouth.
