Closing note In the footsteps of Pheidippides | Athens, 31 October 2010 Making it happen Helicopters buzzed overhead, camera crews craning from their open doors, and the unburstable commentator broadcasting across the crowd seemed set to burst. Slowly but surely each colour-coded block of 1000 marathon participants ahead of mine had been cheered off and the athletes around me moved from languid limbering to much more intent readiness. Suddenly 42 kilometres seemed much more than a walk in the park. But then the starting shout was given and in an instant the debates, the advice, the practice, the nerves, the nausea all fell away. Welcome to my first marathon. For others who have yet to sample the joys of marathoning, let me at once give you my abiding memory of that start, one that others more seasoned later nodded to in recognition as I marvelled at its sonorous beauty. It’s the sound of thousands of trainer-clad feet pulsing a road rhythm in unison; a NikeAdidasAsicsPumaInnov8 medley of treads pounding tarmac. Soft but firm, patterned but changing: bosh, bosh, bosh, bosh, bosh, bosh. And no other sound intrudes: no shouting or cheering, no engines or horns. Just feet, singing. Intoxicating. But there was much more to this Marathon than this discovery. At lunch the day before we had been privileged to have representatives from the charities being supported by the Marathon of Marathons tell us more about what they do. In vivid and often deeply personal ways we were all reminded how big a difference even a small number of passionate people can make to the lives of others. Everyone I later spoke to took away their own particular memories of those speeches. Mine included a sense of dismayed awe at hearing how UNICEF is helping to rehabilitate child soldiers in Central Africa who not only have been victim and witness but also perpetrators of a grotesque catalogue of cruel acts. These are 10 year olds who have had their childhood ripped from them and who now have to be reintroduced to it by specialists supplied and supported by UNICEF. Things like that make 42km seem small change. Another discovery was to witness how far enthusiasm, commitment and sincere single-mindedness can carry you. The Marathon of Marathon was the brainchild of Campbell Lutyens – and John Campbell in particular – and it remains remarkable to me how he and the small team of CL people around him achieved so much. As we gathered for the celebratory dinner at the end of a long day [note to John: can the dinner not be held at the top of a flight of steps next time please?] we all had a chance to applaud some singular achievements, but perhaps the biggest cheer was given to Team Campbell Lutyens ; that idiosyncratic, passionate, memorable group who have that totemic Elizabeth Frink sculpture in their London reception area.
