The marathon of marathons
In the footsteps of Pheidippides | Athens, 31 October 2010
On 31st October, nearly 250
MoMers and their families
and friends, drafted from the
private equity and infrastructure
communities, came to Athens as
part of the Marathon of Marathons
team organised by Campbell
Lutyens and PEI. They took to the
hot and dusty roads and streets of
Greece and ran or walked the 26
miles from Marathon to Athens,
marking the 2500th anniversary
of Pheidippides’ epic run in 490BC
with news of victory at the Battle of
Marathon.
The MoM resulted in the largest charitable fundraising event ever
organised in our industries. At press time, over €1,600,000 had been
raised, and we are hoping to push this to the €2,000,000 mark.
On Friday 29th October, we arrived in Athens for a reception at the
Hotel Grande Bretagne. For the duration of our adventure the hotel
served as MoM HQ, as it had
for Pierre Baron de Coubertin
in 1896 as chairman of the
organising committee of the first
modern Olympiad.
On Saturday, we visited
the Acropolis followed by a
carbo-loading lunch featuring
an introduction to the
beneficiary charities by John
Campbell, as well as inspiring
talks from UNICEF’s Coco
Campbell, art historian
Dr David Bellingham,
marathon writer Will Cockerell,
and MoM head coach Bruce Tulloh.
On Sunday morning we shuttled to the village of Marathon and battled
our way back to Athens in the footsteps of Pheidippides. In the evening, we
returned once more to the Grande Bretagne for a celebratory dinner.
It was an unforgettable weekend.
