8 th Grade Reading Book Report Format POINT VALUE: 300 The required format is as follows: 1. Write a heading on the paper: Name Grade Class (Reading/Adv. Reading) Date: 2. Write the title and author on the first two lines: Title Author 3. Write the report in three paragraphs. It is understood that each paragraph will contain a topic sentence and at least four additional sentences. * In the first paragraph briefly give the setting and summarize the plot of the book. * In the second paragraph tell whether or not the story kept you involved, and why or why not. Be specific in your references to characters, plot ideas, or writing style/language. * In the third paragraph answer the question, “What did you learn about people or life from this book?” Again, refer to specific events and characters in the story to explain your thoughts. 4. The report should be typed in 12 pt., Times New Roman font, and correctly formatted according to the above directions. ***If you are unable to access a computer at home, you may neatly handwrite your report following the instructions above on the pages which follow. c. What is the setting? Does it shift? Explain in detail.<br />

2. Instructions: In the second paragraph tell whether or not the story kept<br />

you involved, and why or why not. Be specific in your references to<br />

characters, elements of plot, imagery, tone, diction, etc.<br />

a. Did the story keep you involved? Why or why not?<br />

b. Does the author use much detail when he describes his characters?<br />

Explain.<br />

c. Does the plot move fast or slow? Why or why not?<br />

d. Does the imagery the author uses keep you interested in the story?<br />

Explain and give an example from the book.<br />

e. What is the author’s tone? What examples can you find to show this?<br />

3. Instructions: In the third paragraph answer the question, “What did you<br />

learn about people or life from this book?” Again, refer to specific<br />

events and characters in the story to explain your thoughts.<br />

a. What is the theme of the book? NOTE: There is always a theme. What<br />

lesson did the main character(s) learn(s) as a result of the conflict they<br />

encountered? How can you apply the lesson the main character learned<br />

to your life? In what way(s) would it make a difference in your future<br />

actions.<br />

i. You must find something. You may not tell me there is not a theme.<br />

4. Things to keep in mind:<br />

Your <strong>Book</strong> <strong>Report</strong> is a final product.<br />

A rough draft should have been completed prior to you typing or<br />

neatly handwriting your <strong>Book</strong> <strong>Report</strong><br />

You should have edited your rough draft for publication. This means<br />

you checked all spelling, grammar, and punctuation. You used a<br />

dictionary if necessary to do this.<br />
