• NGOs must focus <strong>on</strong> missi<strong>on</strong> statements <strong>and</strong> prioritize l<strong>on</strong>g-term<br />
programme planning to achieve sustainability without undermining<br />
immediate emergency-phase activities;<br />
• NGOs should explore <strong>and</strong> use multiple opportunities to generate<br />
resources, including: social marketing; peer educati<strong>on</strong>; training; IEC<br />
materials; <strong>and</strong> the sharing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> programmes or projects. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>y should<br />
pursue development at local <strong>and</strong> NGO levels;<br />
• To ensure the sustainability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> relevant <strong>and</strong> timely services to women<br />
<strong>and</strong> girls, participati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> support for local women’s groups <strong>and</strong><br />
organizati<strong>on</strong>s should be emphasized;<br />
• NGOs should develop partnerships with both local <strong>and</strong> internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
NGOs, Governments <strong>and</strong> the private sector to achieve sustainability in<br />
their programmes;<br />
• To enhance sustainability, NGOs should <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fer quality <strong>and</strong> timely<br />
services in a fully accountable manner. Educating clients <strong>and</strong> creating<br />
dem<strong>and</strong> for services are essential to this process; <strong>and</strong><br />
• <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> transfer <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> knowledge, skills <strong>and</strong> experience to the community<br />
should be a fundamental goal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> NGOs, with emphasis <strong>on</strong> women as<br />
the prime “educators” in families <strong>and</strong> communities. (United Nati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
agencies, <strong>UNFPA</strong>, other d<strong>on</strong>ors, umbrella grant providers, NGOs).<br />
3) Coordinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> cooperati<strong>on</strong>: Coordinating bodies <strong>and</strong> umbrella grant<br />
providers should encourage <strong>and</strong> support NGOs to:<br />
• Ensure coordinati<strong>on</strong>, cooperati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> elaborati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> programmes that<br />
are people-oriented <strong>and</strong> gender-sensitive;<br />
• Promote networking to facilitate effective coordinati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> cooperati<strong>on</strong>;<br />
• Build coaliti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> partnerships as fundamental operating strategies<br />
to achieve reproductive health goals, as well as gender equality <strong>and</strong><br />
equity;<br />
• <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> value <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> new partnership developments with NGOs should be<br />
acknowledged by <strong>UNFPA</strong> as a means to achieving quality<br />
programmes <strong>and</strong> effective outreach (d<strong>on</strong>ors may also c<strong>on</strong>tribute to this<br />
process);<br />
• Use all appropriate channels for informati<strong>on</strong> exchange with<br />
stakeholders;<br />
