/UNIFEM /Office <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the High Commissi<strong>on</strong>er <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Human Rights).<br />
• DPKO medical facilities must provide the required reproductive<br />
health services <strong>and</strong> commodities, including counselling, male <strong>and</strong><br />
female c<strong>on</strong>doms, diagnostics for STIs <strong>and</strong> HIV/AIDS, <strong>and</strong> drugs for<br />
STI treatment for men <strong>and</strong> women (UNAIDS);<br />
• Employment st<strong>and</strong>ards <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the missi<strong>on</strong>, as well as its members with<br />
nati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>and</strong> individual entities, must corresp<strong>on</strong>d with Internati<strong>on</strong>al<br />
Labour Organizati<strong>on</strong> requirements (Resident Coordinator,<br />
Internati<strong>on</strong>al Labour Organizati<strong>on</strong>, UNIFEM).<br />
• <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> peacekeeping missi<strong>on</strong> must functi<strong>on</strong> synergistically with the<br />
United Nati<strong>on</strong>s Resident Coordinator system <strong>and</strong> be part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
relevant <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>me Groups <strong>and</strong> Task Forces, such as the Gender<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>me Group (Resident Coordinator).<br />
3) Interventi<strong>on</strong>s to reduce the vulnerability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the host community, with<br />
special attenti<strong>on</strong> to women, initiated by <strong>and</strong> addressed predominantly<br />
through <strong>UNFPA</strong>-supported organizati<strong>on</strong>s, DPKOs, United Nati<strong>on</strong>s<br />
organizati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> agencies, <strong>and</strong> other d<strong>on</strong>ors. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> relevant entities are<br />
specified directly following each recommendati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
• Public awareness should be strengthened through the provisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> legal <strong>and</strong> human rights, particularly those related to<br />
employment, health, educati<strong>on</strong>, social protecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> housing.<br />
Advantage should be taken <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> missi<strong>on</strong> radio programming in local<br />
languages to reach many groups <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> people with important<br />
messages (all agencies);<br />
• <strong>Women</strong>’s participati<strong>on</strong> in civil society <strong>and</strong> governance should be<br />
stimulated through the provisi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> NGO support <strong>and</strong> capacitybuilding.<br />
Note: sustainability is not a primary criteri<strong>on</strong> for support<br />
(all agencies, especially UNICEF <strong>and</strong> UNHCR);<br />
• Peacekeeping missi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> Resident Coordinator systems should<br />
support the establishment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a formal c<strong>on</strong>sultative mechanism to<br />
further women’s involvement in decisi<strong>on</strong>-making <strong>and</strong> community life<br />
planning during emergency, rec<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> rehabilitati<strong>on</strong><br />
phases (all agencies);<br />
• <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>flict <strong>on</strong> men <strong>and</strong> boys can be dramatic, <strong>and</strong> loss <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
community status can result in the adopti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> negative behaviour.<br />
