Effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> war <strong>on</strong> adolescents<br />

Even in ideal, peaceful settings, adolescence is a challenging time <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> life.<br />

When c<strong>on</strong>flict erupts, the risks associated with adolescence increase for boys,<br />

but multiply for girls. Trauma <strong>and</strong> lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> social support <strong>and</strong> services are<br />

especially harmful to young people <strong>and</strong> may have lasting effects <strong>on</strong> their physical<br />

<strong>and</strong> mental health. When social structures break down in the face <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> war <strong>and</strong><br />

instability, young adults frequently engage in high-risk drug use or sexual<br />

behavior.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> presence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> peacekeeping organizati<strong>on</strong>s in post-c<strong>on</strong>flict settings<br />

sometimes has negative ramificati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> public health, again with severe<br />

repercussi<strong>on</strong>s for women <strong>and</strong> girls. Pers<strong>on</strong>nel <strong>and</strong> military forces used for<br />

peacekeeping missi<strong>on</strong>s are predominantly adult men from differing cultures,<br />

health <strong>and</strong> educati<strong>on</strong> statuses <strong>and</strong>, subsequently, expectati<strong>on</strong>s for c<strong>on</strong>duct.<br />

Increased dem<strong>and</strong> for the commercial sex trade has serious ramificati<strong>on</strong>s for the<br />

entire community, particularly through the presence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> sexual, physical <strong>and</strong><br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic exploitati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Despite the perverse hardships facing women in c<strong>on</strong>flict settings, it is<br />

important to underscore that positive outcomes for women do exist. A central<br />

point <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> reference is that women have organized themselves in numerous<br />

locati<strong>on</strong>s to resp<strong>on</strong>d to c<strong>on</strong>flict at the grass-roots level, particularly attending to<br />

empowerment <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> women <strong>and</strong> girls. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are many ways to reap the benefits <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

women’s leadership <strong>and</strong> to establish them as agents <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> change in post-c<strong>on</strong>flict<br />

redevelopment efforts. Pursuing the most comprehensive reproductive health<br />

services in emergencies <strong>and</strong> clarifying the extent to which those services can be<br />

made sustainable are a notable c<strong>on</strong>cern for the entire United Nati<strong>on</strong>s system,<br />

including <strong>UNFPA</strong>.<br />

Agenda Items<br />

Four areas were highlighted to address the impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>flict <strong>on</strong> women<br />

<strong>and</strong> girls:<br />

• <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>flict <strong>on</strong> reproductive health. <str<strong>on</strong>g>C<strong>on</strong>flict</str<strong>on</strong>g>s expose women to<br />

increased vulnerability <strong>on</strong> range <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> health threats. Social, cultural <strong>and</strong><br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic disempowerment is compounded by poverty, <strong>and</strong> their combinati<strong>on</strong><br />

produces a c<strong>on</strong>text in which women are susceptible to sexual exploitati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

drug abuse. Items addressed include the availability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>and</strong> access to<br />

preventive health services, informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> treatment, <strong>and</strong> involve processes<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> empowerment, gender relati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> the impact <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> HIV/AIDS;<br />

• Gender-based violence <strong>and</strong> its sexual dimensi<strong>on</strong>s, including trafficking.<br />

More informati<strong>on</strong> is needed <strong>on</strong> gender-based violence. Collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this<br />
