• Forming alliances with mass media to promote community <strong>and</strong> women’s<br />

issues. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> media are key actors in globally transmitting informati<strong>on</strong>, news<br />

<strong>and</strong> values, <strong>and</strong> they have the power to generate “empathy,” “c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong>” <strong>and</strong><br />

the “objectificati<strong>on</strong>” <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> women. <strong>Women</strong>’s NGOs have challenged mass-media<br />

reporting <strong>on</strong> armed c<strong>on</strong>flict situati<strong>on</strong>s that focus exclusively <strong>on</strong> the difficulties<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> everyday life, specifically images <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> children <strong>and</strong> women’s vulnerability.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se portrayals show women solely as victims <strong>and</strong> ignore their c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

during c<strong>on</strong>flicts to family <strong>and</strong> community survival. For instance, in Croatia,<br />

B.a.B.e. secured space for women’s issues in leading weekly magazines. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

radio programme “Buenos Tiempos Mujer” in El Salvador provided a space<br />

for dialogue between opposing groups to overcome violence in the family <strong>and</strong><br />

society. In additi<strong>on</strong>, the organizati<strong>on</strong> Media Acti<strong>on</strong> Internati<strong>on</strong>al used radio to<br />

provide educati<strong>on</strong> for Afghani girls <strong>and</strong> women who were relegated to the<br />

home <strong>and</strong> denied access to educati<strong>on</strong> under Taliban rule; 92<br />

• Organizing round tables <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>ferences to bring women from different<br />

venues <strong>and</strong> countries together to discuss community problems <strong>and</strong> develop<br />

“sister projects” fostering social <strong>and</strong> ec<strong>on</strong>omic growth. An example is the<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ference “Regi<strong>on</strong>al <strong>Women</strong>’s Ec<strong>on</strong>omic Networks”, organized by the<br />

Associati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Business <strong>Women</strong> in Belgrade, which brought together women<br />

entrepreneurs <strong>and</strong> networks <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> women’s associati<strong>on</strong>s from six Balkan<br />

countries to exchange informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> experiences, to examine the<br />

possibilities <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> women’s ec<strong>on</strong>omic empowerment <strong>and</strong> opportunities in the<br />

market ec<strong>on</strong>omy <strong>and</strong> to enhance internati<strong>on</strong>al cooperati<strong>on</strong>;<br />

• Researching <strong>and</strong> strategizing causes <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> gender specific<br />

violence;<br />

• Promoting initiatives for the protecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> women’s health, such as health<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>, including family planning, birth c<strong>on</strong>trol, <strong>and</strong> preventi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

services for sexually transmitted infecti<strong>on</strong>s (STIs), especially HIV/AIDS. Each<br />

has serious effects <strong>on</strong> women’s health, productive <strong>and</strong> reproductive<br />

capacities, safe motherhood <strong>and</strong> pregnancy care;<br />

• Identifying ways to support communities <strong>and</strong> protect reproductive health,<br />

which include:<br />

• Identificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> existing service delivery structures, including nati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>and</strong><br />

private-sector health services, <strong>and</strong> women’s <strong>and</strong> community-based groups;<br />

• Identificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the needs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> women c<strong>on</strong>cerning their reproductive health;<br />

<strong>and</strong><br />

• Identificati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> health workers <strong>and</strong> training <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> community staff in services<br />

management.<br />
