Beach 

Renourishment 

Ever wonder how The World’s Most Beautiful Beaches 

stay so clean and powdery white? The Panama City 

Beach Convention & Visitor’s Bureau and the Bay 

County Tourist Development Council completed 

the destination’s first beach renourishment project 

in April 2005 to refurbish the beach and rebuild the 

dunes. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged 

over three million cubic yards of offshore sand. 

Costing between $20 and $30 million, the project 

extended the 16-mile Panama City Beach federal 

project area by a depth of 30 feet on average.

Military 

Panama City Beach and surrounding areas are fortunate 

to be home to two major military bases, Tyndall 

Air Force Base and Naval Support Activity. Tyndall 

Air Force Base encompasses nearly 29,000 acres in 

Southeastern Bay County and houses three operational 

runways. Tyndall employs 2,747 civilians as

Medical Facilities 

Rehabilitation centers, senior care centers, assisted living facilities, 

walk-in clinics, and general and specialized medical practices are 

abundant in Bay County. Panama City Beach has new branches of all 

three major local hospitals, Gulf Coast Medical, Sacred Heart Medical 

and Bay Medical, along with numerous clinics and specialists. 

With more than 225 physicians on staff representing virtually every 

medical specialty, Bay Medical Center is the area’s largest 

and most comprehensive hospital, providing a full range of quality 

healthcare services since 1949. Bay Medical is committed to 

providing the very best healthcare for our community and has been 

nationally recognized for clinical excellence. Bay Medical is currently 

listed among the Top 50 Hospitals in America according to a CBS 

News report on an independent research organization’s study. This 

recognition is a result of being ranked among the top 5 percent in 

the nation for overall clinical quality for five years in a row (2004,

can College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer as a National 

Cancer Center of Excellence. In 2006, Gulf Coast Medical Center and 

the Gulf Coast Cancer Treatment Center developed a partnership 

that created the Gulf Coast Cancer Institute (GCCI). GCCI includes 

the medical oncologists on staff at the hospital and the radiation 

oncologists on staff at the Gulf Coast Cancer Treatment Center. 

Gulf Coast Medical Center includes a 176-bed hospital, two diagnostic 

centers, and three primary care clinics. There are more than 300 

physicians on the hospital’s medical staff, who represent more than 

30 specialties and subspecialties. The hospital, which opened its 

doors in 1977, employs more than 800.

Gulf Coast Medical Center has the area’s most comprehensive diagnostic

Athletic Community 

The new sports facilities at Frank Brown Park put soccer, softball and other 

team sports into the forefront of Panama City Beach recreation. Frank 

Brown Park is a 200+ acre facility containing 9 ball fields, 2 T-ball fields, 3 

soccer fields, tennis, basketball, volleyball, fishing, and more. Well known 

soccer, softball, baseball, lacrosse and fast pitch associations hold events 

here, and cheerleading and gymnastics camps and competitions are also a 

part of the sporting venue. 

Frank Brown Park also serves as the trailhead for the greenways and trails 

system, and has paved trails through the park and onto Gayle’s Trails. 

Under the Palms Playground joins a covered picnic shelter that accommodates 

over 100 people and is an ideal place for children’s play or birthday 

parties; scattered throughout the park and trailhead are over a dozen 

other smaller picnic areas. A lighted 30-acre festival area is home of the 

Gulf Coast Charity Horse Show, Indian Summer Festival, and numerous

Prefer to stay wet? The PCB Aquatic Center at Frank Brown Park has an 

Olympic size salinated, heated swimming pool as well as a kids’ water

Every November, Panama City Beach hosts the Annual Ford Ironman 

Florida (ironmanflorida.com), a race that has become one of North 

America’s most popular. The 2.4-mile swim begins in the Gulf of Mexico, 

followed by the 112-mile bike portion heading west on So. Thomas Drive, 

and a two-loop marathon (26.2 miles) running course. Thousands of 

volunteers help racers through this grueling but exciting competition. For

Ecotourism & Nature 

From an environmental standpoint the Florida Panhandle is like 

no other part of the state; the assemblage of plants and animals 

here occurs nowhere else on earth. That is why the Emerald Coast is 

often refered to as the “Last Undiscovered Florida Coast.” 

Ecotourism—responsible travel to natural areas that conserves 

the environment and improves the well being of local people—is 

among the fastest growing trends. It’s about connecting conservation 

and communities. Activities having to do with nature are on 

the rise…fishing, hiking, biking, nature photography, swimming, 

tubing, canoeing, kayaking, boating and bird-watching. Panama 

City Beach offers it all. 

In early 2007 the National Audubon Society and The St. Joe Company 

announced a partnership to create a world-class, state-of-the-art 

Nature Center in Northwest Florida. The Audubon Center at West 

Bay will celebrate and explore the area’s habitat and wildlife, and 

showcase efforts to restore the area’s native pine flatwoods ecosystem. 

This nature center will be completed in the next few years.

golf towns, Panama City Beach’s golf courses boast pristine fairways,

Community College (GCCC) continues to 

provide a first class education to the citizens of Bay, 

Gulf and Franklin Counties. With its strong emphasis 

on success, regardless of student’s academic background, 

age or educational goals, the college is proud 

of the success of its graduates who transfer to state 

universities and of its occupational students who have 

extremely high placement rates in the careers they 

have chosen. 

GCCC faculty and staff dedicate themselves to serving 

students who plan to transfer to a state university, 

want a new career or better job skills, seek basic skills, 

or want to enrich their lives. GCCC serves more than 

7,000 students each semester and an additional 

21,000 in Lifelong Learning continuing education 

courses. Students may earn one of 75 associate of arts 

“ACCESS, OPPORTUNITY & HOPE” 

or one of 9 associate of science degrees offered by 

GCCC. Twenty associate of applied science degrees, 

along with six-month and one year technical and 

vocational certificate programs are also available. 

Because 75 percent of GCCC students work, classes are 

offered at convenient times and in convenient locations 

-- morning, afternoon, evening and weekend 

courses, in addition to courses on-line and on video 

tape/DVDs that students can view at their own pace 

in their own homes. In addition to the main campus 

in Panama City, the college holds classes at Tyndall Air 

Force Base, the North Bay Center in Southport and the

Florida State University - Panama 

City provides students with the advantages of both 

a small college atmosphere and a major Research I 

university. In cooperation with community and 

junior colleges, students can achieve their higher 

education goals while working and living in Bay and 

surrounding counties. 

FSU Panama City offers upper division courses and 

programs (junior/senior and graduate level), while 

community colleges provide the first two years of

Nearly 1,000 students are enrolled in more than 30 

undergraduate and graduate degree programs. 

Classes at FSU PC are small with many opportunities

of 33 resident faculty members or Tallahassee faculty 

members. Located 100 miles from the main campus 

in Tallahassee, the waterfront setting is one of the

he renovation of Front Beach Road over the next few 

years will give Panama City Beach a more metropolitan 

feel. Walking and biking areas will be created to 

enhance mobility and pedestrian safety, and new 

streetscaping and tropical landscaping will reflect the 

area’s organic coastal forms. Beach access and related 

parking will be improved, and aesthetic elements 

such as benches and streetlights will be added to 

enhance the overall urban form of the community. 

The St. Joe Company has applied for annexation into 

the City for the Breakfast Point development, coming 

online during the next 10-15 years, which will showcase 

shops, restaurants, homes and apartments. The 

City has begun an 18-month project to build a new 

Dan Russell City Pier, and when Bay County rebuilds 

the M. B. Miller Pier Panama City Beach will be the 

only city on the Gulf with twin piers. 

Public Transportation 

In 2001 the Front Beach Road Community Redevelopment 

Agency (CRA) was created to improve public 

transportation. A plan was put in place to bring a new 

transportation system to Front Beach Road with dedicated 

tram lanes and a Multimodal Center for parking, 

also serving as the “Gateway to Panama City Beach.” 

This system will interface with other transportation 

modes such as the Bay Town Trolley (www.baytown 

trolley.org). From 6:00 am until 8:00 pm, Monday 

through Friday, the Baytown Trolley provides a fun, 

efficient, cost-effective way to travel. For routes and 

information call (850) 769-0557. Workforce/commuter 

transportation is served by Ride On at (850) 

769-4854. Coordinated Para-transit is served by Bay 

Area Transportation at (850) 785-0808. 

New International Airport 

The FAA delivered its final Record of Decision on 

September 15, 2006, approving recommendation to 

move the current Panama City-Bay County International 

Airport to a 4,000-acre site at West Bay. Estimated 

construction time for the new airport is 30 months. 

This project is of major interest across the nation and 

around the world. It will be the first airport built in the 

United States in almost 20 years. Homeland Security 

will be testing new security measures here, and tech 

companies from around the world are seeing this as 

somewhat of a test lab for new technology. The longer 

runway will open PCB to Latin American markets 

for cargo operations and attract other businesses and 

industry to the area. 

Port Authority 

The Panama City Port Authority’s five-year Master 

Plan, developed in early 2008, includes three goals by 

2013: Bulkhead refurbishment, expansion of cargo 

and container capacity, and further development of 

the Intermodal Distribution Center. The Port’s general 

and bulk cargo totaled 1.3 million tons in 2007.
