Chairman’s Message
Fall is almost here with the cooler days ahead
and the steaming summer weather behind us.
Panama City Beach had the
summer we have all been anticipating.
Restaurants were full, lots of heads in
beds, and plenty of shopping going on
during the incredible summer season.
The City of Panama City Beach is
having a record year along with the
Tourist Development Council seeing
all time highs on bed tax collections,
and the airport passenger numbers keep
escalating. These are all true signs of
incredible progress that we are having,
and we are all so thankful for these
fortunes.
We had our third Chamber D.I.N.E. Luncheon at the
Bay
Point Marriott Golf Resort & Spa on August 29,
and had the privilege of U.S. Representative Steve
Southerland joining us as the keynote speaker. We
were proud to have Bill Cramer Chevrolet and Waste
Pro
sponsor this incredible event. Steve’s leadership
and
passion for Bay County and the entire Northwest
Florida is exemplary, and makes me proud to be a native
of Panama City.
Starting on August 1, 2011, the Beach
Chamber and Southwest Airlines
formed a partnership with Southwest
as the Presenting Sponsor for the Beach
Chamber’s monthly Lunch & Learn
workshops produced by Navigator, our
small business initiative. As part of this
sponsorship Southwest will raffle off one
round-trip ticket, good for anywhere that
Southwest flies, at every workshop – a
value of $400.
Don’t miss out on the upcoming 2nd
Annual Beach Chamber Golf Classic
on Friday, October 7 at the Hombre Golf Course. There
will be plenty of food and beverages stationed around the
course, with some of the best golfers in town.
Hope you have a great fall and enjoy the upcoming football
season. Go Noles!
President’s Message
As we close out a record-breaking summer
tourism season, the Beach Chamber is staying
busy preparing for some
great fall events. While gearing up
for our 2nd Annual Women’s Work-
Life Symposium, 2nd Annual Beach
Chamber Golf Classic, and the inaugural
UNwineD event coming up in early
November, I’m keeping in mind some
valuable information I learned at this
year’s American Chamber of Commerce
Executives (ACCE) conference.
Marta, Lindsay and I traveled to
Los Angeles in early August for the
opportunity to hear from amazing
speakers such as Tommy Spaulding, New York Times
best-selling author; Jonathan Sprinkles, award-winning
motivational speaker; and Meghan McCain, columnist,
author and blogger (see “ACCE Review” on page 38).
The conference was a fantastic learning and relationshipbuilding
event, and was just the fuel we needed to gear up
for our upcoming events and programs.
On September 23, we will hold our 2nd Annual Women’s
Work-Life Symposium, presented by Comcast. This
year we have assembled an extraordinary
lineup of professional, heavy-hitting
female keynote and breakout speakers,
notably Oprah’s favorite guest of all
time, Dr. Tererai Trent. I am so gracious
to have a talented team who work hard
to produce unparalleled events like this
Women’s Symposium.
The Taste of the Beach wine festival
has been a monumental event put on by
the Walton Area Chamber each year.
In early November, we are planning
on expanding our Taste of Bay portion
from a single evening to a weekend-long festival called
UNwineD. Though the logistics have not been nailed
down, with the help of the TDC and the guidance of the
Walton Area Chamber, we are excited to produce yet
another fantastic event for our residents and visitors.
Air & Sea
Tuskegee Students Graduate Master of Science Program to work in Naval Engineering
Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary
of the Navy for Research,
Development and Acquisition Jim
Thomsen, representatives from the Naval
Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and
Tuskegee University faculty gathered
July 22 to honor 18 graduates who received
their Master of Science degrees in
Systems Engineering.
Keynote speaker Jim Thomsen commended
the graduates for filling what
he described as a requirement to bolster
national security. “You have distinguished
yourselves and have achieved
what is very uncommon in America today,”
Thomsen said, adding that the U.S.
ranked 27 among 29 developed countries
awarding Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics (STEM) Bachelor
of Science degrees.
Thomsen emphasized the importance of
the Tuskegee graduates for having chosen
engineering degrees by comparing STEM
graduate percentages from competing
countries.
“Only 6 percent of undergraduates majored
in engineering in the U.S. Compare
that to Europe’s 12 percent, Singapore’s
20 percent, and China’s 40 percent,”
Thomsen said, emphasizing the graduates’
career talents were critical to replenish
America’s scientists, engineers and
technicians. “It matters. It matters to our
economy and it matters to our national security.
Congratulations class of 2011!”
Thomsen commended NAVSEA’s Naval
Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division
(NSWC PCD) for having formalized
a partnership with Tuskegee University in
2009 to create the Master of Science in
Systems Engineering program.
According to Thomsen and President of
Tuskegee University Gilbert L. Rochon,
the intensive one-year NAVSEA/Tuskegee
University Master of Science in systems
engineering program provides
significant learning opportunities for students
through a specialized curriculum
designed specifically to enhance NAV-
SEA technical workforce competencies.
President of Tuskegee University Gilbert
L. Rochon praised the partnership for having
created a curriculum that is placing
Tuskegee graduates in meaningful career
positions within Department of Defense
laboratories across the nation.
“This is the second cohort of a significant
partnership between the Navy, NAVSEA
and Tuskegee University,” said Rochon.
In appreciation for the Department of
Navy’s and NAVSEA’s contributions,
Rochon presented Thomsen with the
George Washington Carver Leadership in
Research Award.
12th Annual Haunted Trail and
Pumpkin Patch
The Science & Discovery Center of
Northwest Florida, formerly known
as the Junior Museum, continues
its long tradition of providing the ultimate
Halloween experience for families of Bay
and surrounding counties. The “12th Annual
Haunted Trail and Pumpkin Patch” will be
years old and up. The trail opens at dusk.
Children younger than seven can opt for
trick-or-treating on the Peek-a-Boo Path
which will again feature characters from
favorite childhood stories. Young trick-ortreaters
will enjoy the scenery and non-scary
Beach TV is Now HD!
Beach TV, the local Visitor Information
Television Station for Northwest
Florida, is now broadcasting
in High Definition. Knology and Comcast
Cable added Beach TV to their HD tiers on
Wednesday, August 17. Mediacom, which
serves Gulf, Franklin and Walton counties,
will add the new HD channel to their HD tier
on September 12.
“Beach TV is the first local television station
to offer local advertisers the opportunity
to air their television advertisements in
HD,” explained Toni Davis, CEO of Beach
TV and the Destination Network. “The big
networks and cable companies can air programming
in HD, but up until now, all the
local commercials have only been offered in
Standard Definition. Our beaches and local
restaurants look absolutely gorgeous in HD.
We are very excited that we ‘won the race’ to
bring this technology to our community.”
High Definition television is video that has
a resolution substantially higher than that
of traditional television systems (standarddefinition
or SD). HDTV has between one
times that of SD.
“We have been working very hard, and at
a considerable expense, to install the equipment
needed to bring our viewers the superior
sound and picture quality that HD allows,”
says Richard Blalock, VP and Director of
Information Technology for the Destination
Network. “We’re excited about the addition
of this HD channel and the significant difference
in digital archiving, content management
years later I developed a hole in
the center of my retina, which
further decreased my visual acuity.
mind I kept telling myself,
“This has all happened for a
reason, only you don’t know
that reason yet.”
Seven years ago, I came to the
Eye Center of North Florida for
an eye exam. Dr. Pyne was a
new doctor to me; therefore, I
knew this visit would be long
and require an extensive explanation
of my eye history. My
career as an occupational therapist
in sub-acute rehabilitation
meant I was on a tight schedule,
and I needed to get back to my
patients. However, this visit
with Dr. Pyne was happening
for a reason...
At the conclusion of my examination,
Dr. Pyne was both
intrigued and interested by my
eye injury, how I had adapted
to my vision impairment, and
the fact that I was an occupational
therapist. Without
hesitation, he asked, “Would
you be interested in starting
a low vision rehabilitation
program here at our office? We
have been looking for an occupational
therapist, and I think
you may be the perfect candidate!”
Without any thought, I
answered, “YES!”
The low vision rehabilitation
program has continued to
grow over the last six years.
I have been able to help my
patients with various types
of vision impairment learn
to adapt and regain independence
with their activities
of daily living. It may have
taken over 20 years to discover
the reason behind my accident;
however, it has given
me the opportunity to provide
a specialized service and
make POSITVE CHANGES
Weber, M.D. to their
practice. Dr. Weber
joins Medical Director,
John Nanfro, M.D.,
F.A.C.P., and Hassan
Ebrahim, M.D. as the
third Hematologist
Oncologist in their Lynn
Haven center.
Andrew, as he prefers
to be called, received all
of his medical training
in Pennsylvania but still
refers to New Jersey as
home. Admittedly, the
beaches here were a great
lure, but it was the opportunity to work in an environment treating
a diversity of types of cancers that led to his final decision
to relocate.
There was never any doubt in Andrew’s mind about what he
wanted to pursue with his education and says he finds it impossible
to imagine himself being anything other than a doctor.
Very early on in his training he knew that oncology was to be
his chosen field of study and admits he ‘fell in love’ with treating
cancer patients.
A good oncologist, according to Andrew, means bringing the
patient on board with their treatment. He views this as not a
doctor-directed plan, but a team effort which includes the patient
along with their family and caregivers in addition to their
doctors. At the Tommy Hamm Sr. Cancer Center, the three doctors
also meet weekly to discuss their patients and are available
to each other daily if needed.
Dr. Weber completed his Hematology and Medical Oncology
fellowships at Drexel/Hahnemann University in Philadelphia,
PA, where he also served as Chief Fellow. His Internal
Medicine residency and Chief Resident year were completed
at Crozer Chester Medical Center, and obtained his MD at
Temple University School of Medicine. He is board certified
in Internal Medicine, and board eligible in both Hematology
and Medical Oncology. Dr. Weber has served as a Hospitalist
at various institutions in the Philadelphia area, and has
enjoyed both administrative and teaching responsibilities in
his young career.
In his free time, Andrew enjoys community service-related
activities, sports, and playing with his English bulldog, Bauer.
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Weber to the group, and
promise to continue providing our patients with innovative and
compassionate cancer care. For more information call (850)
GOLD’S GYM
My husband, Michael
and I have worked
in the health and
fitness industry
together for 14
years. We’ve
helped thousands
of people
reach their own
personal fitness
goals. We’ve developed
workout programs for competitive
athletes, kids, seniors,
people with health conditions
and everyday people who just
want to be healthy.
We create meal plans for vegetarians,
bodybuilders, people
with high blood pressure, high
cholesterol, eating disorders,
wanting to lose large amounts
of weight, diabetics, picky
children and food allergies. If
you go into our home you’ll find
a variety of whole grains, fresh
lean meats, fresh veggies, fat
free organic milk, fat free Greek
yogurt, fresh fruits, Ezekial
bread, cans of tuna, cage free
eggs, green tea, crystal light and
natural peanut butter. Being
healthy is our job, it is our
passion, it is just the way our
household operates.
Now…let me tell you a story.
My father, who lives next door
to me, worked out at our gym
for a long time. About a year
ago he stopped coming. He was
taking care of his mother, who
lived with him, and he felt there
wasn’t enough time for the gym.
Several months ago he started
not feeling well. He started getting
dizzy if he stood up quickly.
He had even passed out. He decided
to see the doctor. He was
asked to go take a stress test and
have a heart cath. At that point,
he decided he was done with
the tests. He was at the height
of his busy season at work. He
tried to ignore the symptoms, he
never improved his diet, and he
continued to skip the gym.
Then his mother passed away.
During the days that followed
my dad was so sad; he
didn’t look well and I
was worried about
him. A week and
a half after my
grandma’s death,
my dad went
deep-sea fishing
and started feeling
bad at ten miles out.
As he leaned on the rail,
he passed out and woke up in the
ocean with the boat about a mile
away from him. The next chain
of events were one miracle after
another. My uncle got word to
the boat captain, who was able to
get to my dad back into the boat.
The nurse on board cared for him
until they got back to the dock,
where an ambulance awaited.
He was stabilized in the emergency
room but suddenly started
to feel bad again…and then his
heart stopped. The nurses were
screaming CODE BLUE…we
were being pushed out and the
room was now full of doctors,
nurses and a crash cart, reaching
the paddles toward his chest
when his heart miraculously
resumed on its own. Five days
later he was taken into open heart
surgery for a double bypass. One
of the cardiologists told him that
God had to make a Jonah out
of him to get him to listen and
do what he should have already
done. Now, one month to the
day after the boat trip, where is
my dad? He is at the gym!
If the warning signs are there,
go see a doctor. If you feel
there isn’t enough time for the
gym, you are wrong. We all
make time for the things that
are important to us; your health
has to be at the top of your list
of priorities. If you are looking
to start an exercise plan or want
to make changes in your eating
habits so you’ll have a healthier
body and a longer life, contact
Calypso Resort & Towers Tops List of
Expedia ® Insiders’ Select
Sterling Resorts’ Panama City
Beach Property Named Among
World’s Best
Calypso Resort & Towers garners top
honors as recipient of the 2011 Expedia®
Insiders’ Select award, an annual
designation presented to the world’s best
hotel and resort properties on Expedia.com.
Positive guest experience, excellent value
and input from Expedia’s team of hotel experts
helped Calypso clinch its coveted spot
on this year’s ranking by the world’s largest
online travel agency. Out of 130,000 hotels
and resorts listed on Expedia.com, only 500
hotels are deemed Insiders’ Select 2011.
Eligible hotels for 2011 were ranked with a
numerical score in each of three categories,
independent of advertisers and partners. A
major factor in this year’s awards, verified
guest reviews for Calypso Resort & Towers
reflected high levels of satisfaction in the
areas of service, cleanliness, room comfort
and Calypso’s ideal location on the white
sand of Panama City Beach. Recent five-star
ratings spotlight comments such as, “Can’t
wait to go back,” and “Best in Panama City
Beach.”
Calypso was also cited for its affordable value.
Nightly rates start at $139 for a one-bedroom
resort condominium with full kitchen and private
balcony overlooking the Gulf of Mexico.
The property’s family-friendly amenities
allow travelers to stretch their vacation dollar.
Guests enjoy free Internet access, unlimited
DVD rentals, children’s activities, two beachfront
resort pools and poolside Tiki Bar. Families
can soak up the sun on Calypso’s private
beachfront, with complimentary beach chair
service and onsite watersports like parasailing,
banana boat rides and jet ski rentals.
Final consideration was provided by Expedia’s
extensive global network of destination
experts, who weighed firsthand knowledge
of the area’s best hotels with the deciding
vote to name Calypso Resort & Towers a
2011 Expedia® Insiders’ Select.
Calypso Resort & Towers is part of the Sterling
Eye View
Regardless of what you may think,
irregardless is not a word.
“I never made a mistake in grammar but
one in my life and as soon as I done it I
seen it.” ~Carl Sandburg
When someone
mentions health
and wellness,
my mind jumps directly to
diet and exercise. As important
as it is to stay physically
fit, it is obvious that many
people have forgotten the
most important body part to
exercise – their brain.
It’s shocking how many –
especially in the business
world – have completely
dismissed simple grammar,
spelling and pronunciation.
For your entertainment (or
education), here are some
examples of people butchering the most
basic concepts of the English language that
I encounter daily.
There ≠ Their ≠ They’re. There refers to a
place or idea. Their is possessive. They’re
is a contraction for “they are.” Those who
make this blunder are also the culprits of
confusing “its” with “it’s,” “your” with
“you’re,” and “whose” with “who’s.” If you
dare ask if they are familiar with the word
contraction, don’t be surprised when they
start talking about the third trimester in
pregnancy.
Some consider the apostrophe in a contraction
unnecessary, much like the space between
certain words. Take the phrase a lot.
If you see it written “alot” as often as I do,
you may have convinced yourself that it’s
the appropriate spelling. Alot is not a word.
As the author of the amusing and informative
website, TheOatmeal.com, says, “You
don’t write alittle, abunch, acantaloupe,
aporkchop; so don’t write alot.”
Spelling: A Lost Art. At times I think
that people make a concerted effort to spell
words incorrectly. These days, as long as
you have most of the letters in almost the
right order, your computer will correctly arrange
them for you. I recently read a classified
ad for an “Independant” school teacher;
I posted a picture of it to my Facebook page
warranting a clever response that, “The
author of this ad is clearly not applicable.”
Compose vs. Comprise. This one took me
a while to absorb. Now it drives me bananas
when I see these words used incorrectly.
I’ve found that most writers use the word
“comprise” because they don’t know that
it has a different meaning than compose
and it sounds better. More often than not,
you will find a sentence that reads, “The
zoo is comprised of animals.” Sounds nice,
doesn’t it? Nice like nails on a chalkboard.
Here is the simplest explanation: compose
means to make up, and comprise means to
contain. Never would you say, “The zoo is
contained of animals.” At least I hope you
wouldn’t. (Note: The correct wording is,
“The zoo comprises animals.”)
Mispronunciation: If you don’t know
how to say it, don’t. The mispronunciation
of words, along with bad driving, raises my
blood pressure more than anything. Probably
because politicians, business leaders,
celebrities and others who are constantly
asked to speak publicly are the primary
offenders. If I was able to stay awake
By Catherine Collins
long enough in English class to learn how
to speak properly, it’s appalling that the
so-called intellectual elite get away with
such gaffes. I frankly do
not care if you attended an
Ivy League school. I went
to Bay High and know that
there is no “b” in supposedly.
I also know that it is
impossible to get an extra
shot of “expresso” in my
drink at Starbucks.
My personal favorite is
realtor. Let’s pretend I work
in a building that happens
to share an address with a
prominent real estate business.
One would expect real
estate agents to know how to
pronounce their job position,
right? Wish in one hand…
I have heard far too many licensed realtors
say reel-uh-tur to believe that most
actually know the proper pronunciation.
If you are reading this and know that it
is spoken ree-ul-tur, let’s start a game
of Pay It Forward: Grammar Edition.
We can have all Bay County realtors
pronouncing their job correctly by the
end of the year.
To reinforce how easy it is to avoid making
these mistakes, I had to frequently spell
check this document to uncorrect (how’s
that for good grammar) what the word
processor auto-corrected of my intentional
misspellings. Unfortunately, you can’t
always rely on a computer. When in doubt,
use a synonym.
It’s Fun Food!
By Skip Alford
Many times a sudden urge or
thought acted on may impact
thousands. Visitors to the Boatyard
restaurant experience the benefits of
such a notion when they taste cuisine overseen
by Chef Konrad Jochum. “One day I
just decided to become a chef,” says Jochum.
Originally from Berlin, Germany, the awardwinning
chef received his culinary training
in the southwest region of his native country
known as the Black Forest. From there, he
honed his skills as a culinary expert in a variety
of American cities such as New York,
Chicago, Atlanta, Tampa, Palm Beach and,
for 13 years, Key West – before relocating
three years ago to Panama City Beach.
Chef Konrad’s proudest accomplishment
was winning a prestigious James Beard
award during an event he attended in New
York City. Many consider any recognition
by James Beard to be the country’s most
coveted honor for chefs. “This award means
the most to me because James Beard is
known as the Godfather of American cooking,”
says Jochum. Since his early days as
General Manager and Director of Cuisine
at A&B Lobster, Half Shell Raw Bar and
Turtle Kraals in Key West, Konrad has had a
knack for creating unique recipes that make
the most of seafood.
While he is an experienced master of fine
cuisine, he enjoys the freedom of creating
casual dishes better suited for beach life.
One of his favorite original dishes is simple,
fun and hugely popular: the Boatyard BLT.
“In this case, the ‘L’ in BLT stands for Lobster,”
says Jochum. “This baby is stacked
high with fried lobster, plum tomatoes and
bacon, then slathered with my home-made
rémoulade sauce and served on buttered
toasted sour dough bread. It is really awesome,
and I love to watch people tackle this
sandwich. It’s fun food, man! And, you can
only get it at Boatyard,” he boasts in his everjocular
style. “We are proof that really great
food doesn’t have to be serious and formal.
We know how to make it fun!”
ACCE Keynote Review /
By Marta Rose
THE AMERICAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EXECUTIVES (ACCE) conference
is a fantastic learning and relationship-building event, attended every
year by chamber executives around the country. Held in Los Angeles in
early August, this year was no exception. The following is a summary of
three exemplary keynotes who touched the crowd with their fervor, charisma
and originality.
From left: Tommy Spaulding, Jonathan Sprinkles and Meghan McCain.
TOMMY SPAULDING
Author of It’s Not Just Who You Know,
Tommy Spaulding’s presentation focused
on Return on Relationships. Through personal
and inspirational stories, this one-time
dyslexic, high school drop-out took many
steps in his climb to success.
A natural leader, Tommy realized early
on that he had the ability to connect with
people, whatever their ages or backgrounds.
As a teenager he received a copy of Dale
Carnegie’s How to Win Friends & Influence
People from his father, and it quickly
became his guide to building relationship
skills. In his own book, he took Carnegie’s
classic philosophy to the next level, showing
how, by developing deeper relationships
through giving to others and putting them
first, we benefit as well.
Tommy illustrated how genuine and lasting
relationships help a person grow personally,
and how this can in turn revolutionize
business organizations in reaching new
heights in member loyalty. People stay in
organizations, he maintains, because of
that organization’s culture. In his presentation
he discussed “Fifth Floor Culture” and
“Fifth Floor Relationships”…taking the relationship
with that person to a deeper, less
surface level. “It’s not just who you know
or what they can do for you, but what you
can do for them,” he says. “Motives matter.
Establishing a deeper connection is about
authenticity, not manipulation; reciprocity,
not selfishness. Every relationship is a
two-way street, and we never know when a
chance encounter can change the direction
of our lives.”
Throughout his life at every step, Tommy
learned that the secret to achieving your
full potential in life is reaching out for the
support and insight and influence of others.
None of us achieve success alone.
JONATHAN SPRINKLES
This charming, highly animated speaker
discussed success, leadership and lifestyle
in his engaging presentation, Uncensored
Straight-Talk About Success. In addition to
covering some basic principles like “When
you blame something, you give it more
power over your life than you,” and “Don’t
let the fear of what’s in front of you cheat
you out of what’s just around the corner,”
Jonathan introduced his own brand of enthusiasm
into the mix saying, “Sometimes
ya gotta do what ya gotta do until you get to
do what you want to do,” and my personal
favorites, “You were born an original, don’t
live like a copy,” and “Sameness is the enemy
of every business.”
Jonathan discussed power, suggesting that
if power is the ability to get results, personal
power is the ability to determine the results
of everything about YOU. He reminded us
that power cannot be taken away, but it can
be given away. His “Five Ways to Close
More Business and Get Clients For Life” is
chock-full of the usual Sprinklisms:
• Get Fired! Take a long, honest look at
how you stack up compared to your competition.
Use this inventory as motivation
to fix your weaknesses and to reposition
yourself.
• Change Your Identity. Don’ be satisfied
with being viewed solely as someone who
is “selling” your clients something.
Success Finds Blue Heron Fine Gifts
The idea to open a fine gift gallery was
born after Dennis Brown became a
casualty of corporate downsizing in
2009. The job market was nonexistent, so he
had to make a survival decision. Combining
his wife Leslie’s art, design and business experience
with his own business management
background, it made perfect sense. Both are
college graduates, Leslie in Art; Dennis in
business. Leslie owned a design business
and managed art galleries for several years.
Both also have a passion for art and a great
sense of what customers are looking for.
The business was incorporated and the retail
space was selected (Breakfast Point Marketplace
next to a thriving Publix) just before
the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf. They decided
to go forward, largely based on the confidence
they had in the leaders of Panama City
Beach. They were not disappointed.
The doors opened without fanfare on September
13, 2010, and the first customers arrived;
some had even been waiting for the
doors to open. The Browns joined the Panama
City Beach Chamber and held a grand
opening on October 14, which was a great
success. “The Chamber has been most helpful
getting the word out, and the networking
results have been huge,” says Leslie.
The marketing plan was the next big undertaking.
Their challenge was when to market
to which customer. There are the locals,
winter guests, spring breakers and summer
tourists. The Brown’s plan included local
newspaper ads, local TV spots, community
involvement, local networking groups, and
charity events aimed at gaining the locals’
trust. Dennis and Leslie gave personal presentations
at five different resorts, held gallery
events with guest artists, and hosted tea
and pasta tastings which appealed to both
the winter guests and the locals. Promoting
via social media, such as Facebook and
Twitter, was very successful and has been an
effective way to reach tourists before they
arrive. The Browns offer their customers a
wide variety of unique selections and exceptional
customer service. “We want to make
their shopping visit an experience versus just
spending money,” says Leslie. “The repeat
and referral business has been terrific.”
The challenge is how to increase foot traffic
through the door, both in the weekly tourists
and the local markets. Both agree that their
advertising campaigns, community involvement
and weekly presentations are proving
to be beneficial.
With the works of over 50 American Artisans
and an inventory of 96% American Fine
Craft, Blue Heron Fine Gifts offers a shopping
experience like no other in this area.
A unique collection of handcrafted (often
one of a kind) jewelry, pottery, blown glass,
sculpture, framed prints, handmade soaps
and other very clever things. The gallery also
includes a culinary corner with handmade
• Choose a Champion. Identify a person
in your industry you admire and would like
to emulate. Use that person’s success as a
benchmark of your own career.
• Tell the Truth. Be bold. Talk up the results
you’re getting, and stand behind your work.
If you are fired up, others will be afraid not
to be!
• If it Ain’t Broke, Fix it Anyway. In a slow
season everyone can use a little help. Take on
a consultant’s mindset, and figure out faster,
more efficient ways to accomplish goals.
MEGHAN McCAIN
Daughter of the 2008 Republican presidential
candidate, Senator John McCain, Meghan
McCain’s presentation on Progressive Republicanism
at the ACCE conference was candid
and boisterous, and this young woman was
clearly unafraid to speak her mind.
In addition to writing a weekly column for
the website/blog THE DAILY BEAST,
Meghan is the author of Dirty Sexy Politics,
in which she takes a hard look at the future
of her party, going behind the scenes on her
father’s campaign trail and in the spotlight to
discuss why she thinks the Republican Party
has veered from its core values of freedom,
honesty and individuality. She lays out the
shift in the GOP, offers her definition of Progressive
Republicanism, and shares observations
of her party’s fears. “It would be easy
to say my generation views politics very
differently from others,” she says. “Maybe
we’re more progressive, socially liberal or
just hate arguing in lieu of actually solving
the problems at hand. But what I’ve learned
though my experience is that these feelings
are not contained to one age group. They’re
the growing beliefs and desires of people of
all ages, races, genders, faiths, persuasions
and political parties.”
She goes on to say, “I think we’re seeing a political
war brewing. But it is not between Republicans
and Democrats. It is not between
conservatives and liberals. It is between the
future and the past. I believe most people are
ready to move on to that future.”
The Browns feel the first two years are always
a challenge, but so far it has surpassed expectations.
“The Small Business Development
Center has been a wonderful resource for the
Blue Heron Fine Gifts,” says Leslie. “We
contacted SBDC in February of 2010, when
we first formulated our thoughts about starting
our own business in Panama City Beach.
We were referred to Johnny Branch for a
free business consultation. What a wonderful
stroke of luck! Johnny not only had the
knowledge to direct us through the necessary
steps to open our business, he also had the day
to day hands on experience of running a successful
business.”
Branch gave the Browns direction on preparing
their business plan, and offered numerous
suggestions for setting short-term and
intermediate goals. He also directed Leslie
through the set-up and use of Quickbooks and
Point of Sale software. But the Browns agree
that beyond all his help, Branch’s moral support
has been the biggest treasure. “We are so
thankful that Joe Chavarria has given Johnny
full support to provide whatever we needed,”
says Leslie. “We’ve become much more comfortable
in the bookkeeping and accounting of
still call on SBDC for continuing support as
we find need.”
Committee Updates

Charting the Entrepreneurial Course for Small Business
Navigator
August 25 was a big day for the Beach Chamber.
The media was invited to FSU PC for a
special announcement
of Navigator’s new partnership
with Southwest
Airlines, in which the airlines
will be Presenting
Sponsor for the Navigator’s
monthly Lunch &
Learn workshops.
For the past two years,
Navigator has carefully
crafted a schedule of
workshops for our business
community to learn,
discover, sharpen skills and
become conscious of new
trends in business. The workshops’ broad
subject base ranges from technology and social
media to effective leadership, networking,
business etiquette and sharpening time management
skills.
“Navigator’s mission is to provide support for
and promote the small business interests of
our membership,” said Navigator Chairman
Karen Blackerby. “Our goal is to provide programs
specifically for small business leaders
and individuals in our community that will
enhance their lives.”
Alison Hoefler, Southwest Airlines Manager
of Community Affairs & Grassroots, visited
the Beach Chamber in May 2011, following
the airport’s first anniversary recognition luncheon,
and upon learning of Navigator’s extensive
aspirations immediately felt a synergy.
“Southwest Airlines’ Community Affairs &
Grassroots Team endeavors to support the
communities and the good works that make a
meaningful difference in the cities we serve,”
she explained. “We
proudly partner with organizations
that are helping
shape our communities
all across America,
and we strive to make
a positive difference
in these communities.
When we serve together,
everyone soars.”
As part of this sponsorship,
which began on
August 1, Southwest will
raffle off one round-trip
ticket, good for anywhere
that Southwest flies, at every workshop – a
value of $400.
After the press announcement, Navigator
hosted another Lunch & Learn workshop,
“Social People: Business Etiquette for the
New Future,” sponsored by Gulf World, FSU
PC, Gulf Coast State College and the Small
Business Development Center. Shay Catrett
from BAYSOLUTIONS reviewed how technology
has changed communications in the
workplace, covering telephone, cell phone
and email etiquette. Cost for Lunch & Learns
is $25/person for Chamber members; $35/person
for non-members, and includes a catered
lunch. Pre-registration is required by calling
EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP
F OCU S
ON THE FUTURE
Empowering Students to See
Their Own Potential
Looking for Community
Business Leaders to
Become Classroom
Mentors
The Beach Chamber’s Education Partnership
Committee is in the third year of recruiting
Chamber members to become one of
the “Superintendent’s Classroom Mentors.”
With the start of a new school year, we are
looking for people in the business community
that have a true desire to empower youth.
Bay School Superintendent Bill Husfelt recently
held an orientation for the mentors,
and encouraged them by saying, “We want
them (the students) to see what they can be!”
He believes that this business community has
a unique position to inspire and motivate our
students. We all have a story of how we made
it from high school to where we are today.
Being a classroom mentor includes meeting
two or three times a month with a class of students
for 20-30 minutes, sharing stories and
being there on a consistent basis throughout
the school year. The classroom mentor can
bring relevance to their studies, with firsthand
knowledge and real examples of the business
world for students. This shows students that
the community cares about their future, and
helps to reinforce the vital connection and
important role education plays in their future
career successes. A recent survey conducted
by the school board revealed that teachers
and principals are encouraged by the results
52 THE CIRCUIT September/October 2011

of local mentoring programs; more than 200
teachers requesting a classroom mentor for
the new school year. This has expanded the
program to also serve several elementary and
middle schools in the Bay County District.
The Education Partnership Commitee held a
Mentoring Orientation Breakfast on September
8, conducting a brief training session that
introduced mentors to its Mentor Resource
Guide. We look forward to bringing monthly
updates on the mentoring program and
other projects the committee will be working
on in the future. If you are interested in mentoring
Mayor Gayle Oberst
City of Panama City Beach
As the summer
winds down, things
get going in Panama
City Beach. A grand
opening ceremony
is taking place in
late September or
early October for
the Panama City
Beach Conservation
Park. The park,
located west of Highway 79 and behind the
St. Joe Commerce Park, consists of 3,000
acres and will have over 20 miles of dirt trails
for walking, hiking and biking. An outdoor
classroom, picnic tables and a large pavilion
will be available for the public. Nine miles
of paved trails connect the park with Colony
Club subdivision on the east, Frank Brown/
Aaron Bessant parks on the south, and West
Bay on the north. Several fall concerts and
events are scheduled in Frank Brown and
Aaron Bessant parks.
The City Planning Department has been
talking with the Harley Davidson developers
and their plans for a sales and service
center on the Parkway and Gulf Boulevard
are once again going forward. The Glimcher
Development Company (developers of
the Destin Commons Mall) and St. Joe are
again in talks to build a 350,000 square foot
shopping center. The new WalMart plans
are progressing through City Engineering,
transportation and Planning Departments.
The Breakfast Point medical facilities broke
ground, and we are seeing structures coming
up. On the residential side, Turtle Cove
and Breakfast Point subdivisions are building
and selling homes.
The City has experienced record growth
and increases in the City’s 1% sales tax
this fiscal year, which indicates the tourists
have been here in numbers and more
of “the locals” are spending money in the
City. This is a great place to live – and
an exciting time to be involved in Panama
City Beach.
Bay District Schools
Bill Husfelt, Superintendent
Bay District Schools
School board members
and I have special
reasons to be
enthusiastic about
health and wellness.
After joining
the ranks of those
for whom “dodging
a bullet” isn’t
just an expression,
I will never take
good health for granted again. I understand
the importance of diet and exercise a lot
more these days.
As I greet students and parents who are new
to our schools, I have a chance to learn about
the reasons they have moved to Bay County.
Very often, they cite the opportunity for outdoor
activities. From hunting and fishing to
kayaking and surfboarding to golf and running,
every day in our home offers an array
of awesome activities to keep us all fit and
entertained. If you can’t find a pleasurable
means of exercise in Bay County, you just
are not trying.
In Bay District Schools, we also emphasize
health and wellness as part of our regular
curriculum. The old days of “go out and
play” are just that--the old days. Our physical
education teachers and coaches now
deliver a thorough curriculum designed
to help kids make healthy choices and develop
lifelong fitness habits. As we learn
more about the incidence of obesity among
youngsters, we realize that these lessons
are valuable for the long term health of our
citizens.
To many of us, the fall months in north Florida
are the most beautiful. I hope you’ll join
me in getting some exercise by jumping up
and down at football games, playing some
golf, and getting serious about a regular exercise
routine. I’m participating in the Bay
Education Foundation’s Strides for Scholars
5K Walk-Run on February 25. I challenge
you to join me there or to develop your own
goals for a healthy fall.
Bay County Commission
Bill Dozier, Chairman
Bay County Commission
Like most everyone
these days, the Bay
County Commission
has been forced
to make some difficult
decisions regarding
our budget
this year as property
valuations declined
another 6.4 percent.
From cuts in services
to workforce reductions, the choices have
not been easy.
We are in the midst of finalizing the 2011-
2012 budget, and I’m happy to report that the
countywide millage will not exceed the current
rate of 3.65, even though that means a
more than $3.4 million reduction in revenues
from last year, for a total ad valorem collection
of $49.5 million.
One slight change, though, may be felt by
people living in unincorporated Bay County.
Property values have been declining steadily,
and in order to keep our Fire Services Department
capable of delivering the quality
fire protection people in the unincorporated
areas deserve, the board is considering raising
the millage rate in those areas from .7815
to the 1 mil rate approved by voters in the
early 1980s.
For a person who lives in unincorporated Bay
County with a home assessed at $250,000,
this is an increase of $43.70 per year. Should
the county keep the millage at its current rate
it would mean a shortfall of some $1.8 million
and a sharp reduction in fire services,
opening the door for drastic increases in homeowners’
fire insurance premiums. It’s a
difficult choice, but one that is necessary.
On a brighter note, we are pleased to announce
that the West End Fire Station was
recently completed, and will provide a longawaited
manned fire station in westernmost
areas of the county.
The station is expected to be operational at
the beginning of the upcoming fiscal year.
Janet Watermeier, Executive Director
Bay County Economic Development Alliance
Since 1984, the third week of September
marks the State of Florida’s Industry Appreciation
Week. It recognizes Florida’s
target industries – life sciences, information
technology, aviation/aerospace,
homeland security/defense, financial/
professional services, clean energy and
manufacturing – as the most dynamic sectors
of the economy that create high-skill,
high-wage jobs. These industries help diversify
and strengthen our position among
the world’s largest economies.
To celebrate on a local level, the EDA hosts an annual Celebration
of Industry Excellence Awards luncheon. This luncheon honors
the businesses and industries in Bay County and recognizes
those that make a significant impact on the community. The EDA
has partnered with the Bay County Chamber of Commerce, the
Panama City Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Bay County
Tourist Development Council to honor businesses, not only in our
local target industry sectors, but also in the areas of general business
and hospitality.
Three Community Impact Awards will be presented at the luncheon
set for September 30th. The award categories include General
Business, Hospitality and Target Industry. Award winners
are chosen based on their exceptional contributions to the local
economy and outstanding work in community service.
Last year, three Bay County companies, ARINC, Carr, Riggs &
Ingram and The Resort Collection of Panama City Beach, received
Community Impact Awards. In addition, a fourth company, Coast
HOW-DEE!,
a Southern Fried
comedy feature film
created by Panama
City’s own Judy
Bryte, is quickly becoming
a sensation,
not just locally but
across the United
States. This piece is
about Minnie Pearl.
For those who didn’t catch Hee Haw in its
hay day, or if you’ve never seen her performances
at the Grand Ole Opry/Ryman Theater
in Nashville, you will still find yourself
laughing and crying simultaneously at her
antics. Sarah Ophelia Colley Cannon played
the countrified comedienne, signature hat
complete with the price tag dangling from
the brim, who was a bridge-playing, tennis
tournament-going socialite of sorts.
The movie will be filmed in flashback format
stretching from the 1940s to the first Hee Haw
shows in 1969, all the way to 1996. Minnie is
Judy’s inspiration for this film, which is not a
documentary but a tribute filled with hilarity
and sensitivity. The first draft is at the doorstep
of completion, and there is a veritable plethora
of “Who’s Who of Hollywood” anxiously
awaiting its final version. We have had commitments
from Minnie’s friends Barbara Eden,
K D Lang, Brenda Lee and more.
Also during the past month, we shot a huge
national commercial inviting people to come
back to the Gulf Coast. Gulf World was instrumental
in this :60 spot, as well as shopping
That commercial alone dropped $200,000 in
the pockets of Bay County businesses. The
the beautiful sugar-white sands, the Washington
U.S. Chamber Ranks
Florida’s Workforce and
Job Training No. 1
Among States
Kim Bodine, Executive Director
Gulf Coast Workforce Board
Continuing a pattern
of national
recognition for its
workforce training,
Florida earned the
top spot in the second
annual Enterprising
States report
just released by the
U.S. Chamber of
Commerce and the
National Chamber Foundation.
Florida’s top ranking was based on its efficient
job placement system, high share of
high school students in advanced placement
courses, and affordable and efficient higher
education system. The state placed in the
top three in all four measures and was also
touted for their Quick Response Training
(QRT) Program, an employer-driven training
program designed to assist new value-added
businesses and provide existing Florida businesses
the necessary training for expansion.
Kim Bodine, who has been the Executive
Director for the Gulf Coast Workforce Board
for the past 15 years added, “The strength of
Florida’s workforce system is the ability of
the local boards to create and sustain meaningful
and creative partnerships to address
the needs specific to the part of Florida that
we serve. Florida is a very diverse state. Our
governors, including Governor Scott and
our legislature have always understood that
a cookie cutter approach, which is used in
most states, would not work here.”
More than 80 percent of adults receiving
training and intensive workforce services
through the state workforce system found a
job, with a nearly 90-percent retention rate,
during the past year. Locally, 99 percent
of the adults who have been sponsored into
training and intensive services by the Gulf
Coast Workforce Board have gone to work
in jobs that have an average wage of $16.79
per hour.
Updates on Community, Education, Workforce & Government
“The Panama City Mill has been utilizing the
services of the Workforce Center for years.
They have been very helpful in assisting us
recruit, screen and hire qualified candidates,”
said Amy Ellis, Human Resource Representative
for RockTenn.
The 2011 U.S. Chamber report, released in
June 2011, states that education and training
of workers is at the center of a new paradigm
for economic growth. The report estimates
that by 2018, 63 percent of jobs will require
some type of post-high school training credential.
Florida is moving in the right direction,
as the Enterprising States report ranked
it first in high school advanced placement intensity
and job placement efficiency, second
in higher education efficiency and third in
college affordability among the 50 states. The
full report is available at http://www.uschamber.com/reports/enterprising-states-2011.
According to U.S. News and World
Karen Durden Earns
2011 Southern Regional
Trustee Leadership
Award for GCSC
Dr. Jim Kerley, President
Gulf Coast State College
This community has
benefited for generations
with strong,
servant leaders, and
Gulf Coast State
College has benefited
from many of
those same leaders
who serve on the
College’s governing
District Board
of Trustees. It is my privilege to announce
that the Association of Community College
Trustees (ACCT) has named our own Karen
Durden as the recipient of the 2011 Southern
Regional Trustee Leadership Award. She is
one of only five recipients who will be honored
at the national ACCT Annual Community
College Leadership Congress in Dallas
this October.
Karen displays the professionalism, energy
and wisdom that are essential for top-notch
volunteer board members. In my twenty-two
years as a college president, I would rank her
at the top of community and board members
with whom I have had the pleasure to work
closely. She displays the true spirit of a college
board leader and continues to champion
every aspect of this College.
She spends time and energy in so many ways
as an advocate for Gulf Coast. Whether serving
on budget and construction committees
or working with legislators at the state and
national level, her knowledge and insight
have been invaluable in solving challenges
facing two-year postsecondary education.
Karen is committed to promoting the college
mission of offering access and opportunity to
students and thoroughly understands the significant
needs of students and the pathways
to success that education provides. We are
blessed to have so many great community
leaders serve as Trustees and as Foundation
Board of Directors, and most importantly,
our students are the direct beneficiaries of
their hard work and dedication.
Hello Ambassadors,
and thank you for
your commitment
during 2011. We are over
halfway through 2011, and
we hope to finish the year
strong with a lot more grand
openings and welcoming of new Ambassadors.
We’ve had some really great grand openings,
thanks to the new members who
make such a strong effort to introduce
your businesses to the Ambassadors. It is
always a pleasure to meet the new members
and their staff at such an exciting
time for their business. We try to let them
know that the Chamber and Ambassadors
are here for support in their success.
It’s been a record breaking summer for
the city of Panama City Beach. As Ambassadors,
we look forward to the opportunities
this provides to do many more
grand openings and ribbon cuttings. As
Ambassadors, our mission is to support
Membership Update
Cyndi Ainsworth, VP Membership Services
As I walked the stairs
down to the beautiful
white sand and
crisp blue water this past
weekend, it hit me...where did
everyone go? At this time of
the morning, there were only
a few of us enjoying this Sunday solace, but parents
and children alike were certainly preparing for the first
day of school.
The reports are in; we had a magnificent summer
which was filled with fun, sun and many visitors to our
beautiful beaches. As traffic became heavier, the busy
vacationers and business owners alike were sporting
that “eternal smile.” You can’t blame them; during the
past year we’ve seen the opening of many new attractions,
superb restaurants and the expansion of many
established businesses.
Panama City Beach has so much to offer; when was
the last time you took full advantage of all the amenities
right in your own backyard? Fall is the best time
to enjoy our beautiful beaches, as well as receive some
great rates on the most popular attractions. We get so
busy with our daily lives we forget to relax with our
families. Your Beach Chamber membership can help
you “work smarter, not harder” to achieve success and
more quality time with your families.
If you are a new business, host a grand opening with
the assistance of the Beach Chamber and the Ambassadors;
you will get many new customers through your
door. Maybe you’d like to join the Ambassador committee.
By attending groundbreakings, grand openings
and anniversary celebrations, you could meet
every owner of every new business that opens in our
area. The Beach Chamber is committed to keeping
you connected to other chamber members through
networking events such as New Member Welcome
Breakfasts, D.I.N.E. Luncheons, 12@12 Luncheons
and After-Hours Mixers. We are committed to keeping
you involved, informed and educated through leads
groups, Lunch & Learns, free small business seminars,
and member Roundtables. For a detailed listing of all
of our events, remember to check the “Beach Buzz”
each Monday morning, and if you aren’t receiving the
“Beach Buzz” contact one of your Beach Chamber
staff members at (850) 235-1159.
you are not an Ambassador and would like to become
one, the procedure is simple. All you need to do is obtain
out and turn it in.
