2008 has started with a BANG! You can just feel
the excitement and anticipation surrounding
the activities involving the
City of Panama City Beach, Bay and
surrounding Counties.
One of the most important concepts
to
embrace for 2008 and the future
is
that of “Regionalism.” As our
area continues to grow and prosper,
Regionalism and what it means will
play a pivotal role with our continued
success.
To that point, business and community
leaders from four counties, Bay, Gulf, Walton and
Okaloosa, have come together to form what is known
as Coastal Vision 3000. This group has been tasked
with creating a consistent brand for our region and to
increase both national and international awareness
for our market. Keep an eye out for “The Beach!”
During our Friday at the Beach event on March
14th, there will be a very enlightening presentation
regarding “The Beach” and what it means.
p r e s i d e n t ‘ s r e p o r t
T
he excitement has begun. Pier Park has
officially opened with new specialty shops
and great restaurants. Your
Chamber is working with several
entities to plan weekly events
throughout the year, especially
during the holiday season.
By the time you receive this special
edition of The Circuit, “Dining Out
in Panama City Beach,” we will be
within weeks of opening our new
Chamber building at 309 Beckrich Road. We have
great things planned for our community. State-of-theart
technology, a beautiful history wall, touch screen
kiosks for visitors and people relocating to the area, a
community board room, and extended hours including
Saturday and Sunday. We are also working with the
Workforce Center, FSU-Panama City and Gulf Coast
Community College to add job placement, training,
focus forums and business center to our location.
Al McCambry
On February 22nd, The Greater Panama City Beaches
Chamber hosted its Annual Awards Banquet. This
year’s celebration was held at the
Edgewater Beach Resort, and I
would like to thank Andy Phillips
and his staff for a great time.
During the month of April, your
Beaches Chamber will be relocating
to 309 Beckrich Road. We are very
excited about our new home! We
will have something for everyone
including a beautiful history wall, extended hours
including Saturday and Sunday, and touch screen
kiosks for visitors.
Like I said, 2008 has started with a Bang! Stay in
touch with your Beaches Chamber. Get involved.
Help to continue to make this area a great place to
Live, Work and Play.
Debi Knight
We expect 2008 to be a very optimistic year for
growth, tourism and community development.
Business and community leaders
from four counties, Gulf, Bay, Walton
and Okaloosa, have come together
to form Coastal Vision 3000. This
group is creating a consistent brand
for our region. The goal is to increase
national and international awareness,
increase support for our local
tourism and economic development
opportunities, and grow our market. At our Friday
at the Beach during the second week of March Andy
Phillips of Edgewater Beach Resort, who is also on the
Executive Board of Coastal Vision 3000, will give a
presentation to our members.
And finally, a Big Thank You to Lisa Powell, our
Publicity Committee Chair, for all her hard work in
making our Annual Awards Banquet on February
22nd a huge success!
The Beach: A way of life that will change yours.
Colonial Bank
You’ll like it here.
When you get your start as a community bank, it’s hard to forget
your roots. Colonial Bank of Panama City Beach hasn’t forgotten
because it finds its strength in the community.
“Our roots run deep in Panama City Beach. Our branch is an extension of this
community and the strength of our roots can be seen in our employees through
leadership and community involvement,” says Joe Johnston, branch sales
manager for the Panama City Beach Colonial Bank office.
The community spirit among
Colonial employees is
phenomenal. As members
of the community, they
want to see business leaders
succeed and the
community grow;
therefore they
do what it takes
to help. “That
spirit of success
is wrapped in our
promise to offer
the high-touch,
personal service our customers
want, in a way that demonstrates
our commitment,” says Johnston.
“At Colonial Bank, not only are we building our customer base, we’re building
relationships,” he continues. “That’s one reason why people keep coming
back to us. They like the way they’re treated. They’re shown respect in every
transaction by people who understand what really matters. We’ve always
been this way; it’s a commitment that will never change.” Every Colonial
banker has one goal in mind – to exceed the expectations of the shareholders,
customers and employees they serve.
“We live the Colonial brand promise ‘You’ll like it here.’ It’s a part of our
everyday life and we utilize this promise to serve the Panama City Beach
community. That’s why you see our bankers involved in community activities.
We consider it a privilege to be part of the growth and success of Panama City
Beach – a community where our strong roots are firmly planted.”
Salty’s has been a tradition on Panama
City Beach since 1986, and the tradition
continues with a great twist. We have
opened an all new Sports Bar and Grill
featuring fifteen screens, a state of the
art sound system and stage for the best
live performances in northwest Florida.
Although we have many beach favorites,
such as, our famous grouper sandwich and
100% black angus burgers, our menu has
grown to include the “best pizza on the
beach”. Home of the ten pound pizza, the
Salty’s Super Supreme is not for the faint of
heart. With our full dine in menu and our
a few
minutes
with...
Lee Ann
Leonard
I
come from a big family. I am
the youngest of six siblings,
the aunt of fifteen nieces and
nephews and the great aunt of four
and counting. My father Robert, who
retired from the Air Force as a fullbird
colonel, at times channeled the
Sound of Music’s
Captain Georg Von
Trapp character to
manage his evergrowing
brood.
While my dad
never summoned
us with a whistle,
his military ways
helped him maintain
order…most of
the time. Despite
his best efforts, we
would occasionally
erupt with food fights, verbal
assaults and boundary battles. My
mother Betty often delighted in
these unpredictable outbursts and in
the fun and excitement our diverse
group generated. While my parents
are now deceased, their children
continue the squabbles but also the
traditions. One such tradition is an
annual family reunion which I was
fortunate to host in Panama City
Beach last year. Our gatherings are
a rich stew of savory homemade
dishes, childhood reminiscences,
games, relentless teasing and
personal updates reminding me of
all that is frustrating and wonderful
about a sprawling family tree.
The frustration stems from enduring
years of competing for resources
and parental attention, frequent
invasions of privacy and even the
stigma of birth order. My brother
and sisters still resent the greater
freedom they say I enjoyed as the
baby of the family. While they did
suffer stricter rules, it was only
because, after seeing five kids
through puberty and beyond, my
parents were understandably tired
when I finally arrived.
Lee Ann (middle) flanked by her brother Michael and
sisters Mary, Bertie and Sharon on Panama City
Beach for their 2007 family reunion.
A big family can be challenging—
as all families can be—but
also persistently grounding,
unflinchingly supportive and, most
importantly, unconditionally loving.
Being the baby brings benefits too.
My older siblings are my greatest
teachers. They take the road less
traveled first and then warn me of
the bumps and perils. Additionally,
being the baby means that, at least
in their company, I can claim to
be the youngest in the room. As
a woman approaching forty, I am
increasingly grateful for that gift!
A big family fights big, plays big
and loves big. Would I opt out?
That’s a big “NO!"
Lee Ann Leonard is the General
Manager for By The Sea Resorts,
a Panama City Beach hotel chain
including five properties and a new
beachfront restaurant and bar, the
Barefoot Beach Club.
14 The Circuit March/April 2008

My adult life up to 2003
was as a radio broadcaster.
I was a personality, a
program
director and
an operations
manager in
mostly large
cities. My
a few
minutes
with...
Bob Zamboni
wife Linda
was a McDonald’s Restaurant
corporate executive for most of her
working life, first in Tampa Bay, then
in Dallas, Chicago and Houston. In
2003, we left corporate life and bought
a restaurant. As my wife found out,
it’s a lot different owning your own
rather than helping out other owner/
operators with their problems. And
I discovered it was a lot easier
being a broadcaster than keeping
the books, paying bills and signing
paychecks. There are two options:
Have a life....or own a restaurant.
We LOVE to play golf. But for the
first year, we stopped playing, period.
Who had the time? Instead of sitting
down for a lovely meal that I would
normally cook at 7:30, we found
ourselves ordering pizza at 9:00 and
eating it in front of the TV. Corporate
life was fairly predictable. Owning
a restaurant is not. Linda would get
a call at 2:30 in the morning; the
opening
manager
“There are two
options: Have a life...
or own a restaurant!”
The Zambonis at Mahogany Run Golf Course in
St. Thomas, Virgin Islands in 2007.
wouldn’t
be there
because
the car
wouldn’t
start. Guess who went in to open up
at 5:00 am?
We love wine, but how much
could you imbibe when that early
call might materialize? And from
Spring Break to August, there are no
vacations because it’s in season. We
were avid travelers; golfing, wine
festivals, foodie tours,
mostly two weeks at a
time. Not any more. If
we can get a few days,
we’re lucky. But is it
worth it?
You’re darned right
it is. We have the
satisfaction of having
great employees who
have been with us from
the start. We know the
joy of giving back to
the community which helps us earn
our living. We live in a place that’s
growing by leaps and bounds (OK,
smaller leaps at the moment). But
would anyone doubt the future of
our region? We can walk to the most
beautiful beaches on the Emerald
Coast, and see why everybody will
be coming to share in our Paradise.
And if you want a Big Mac with
Fries and a smile, come see us.
Dock of The Bay
at St. Andrews Bay
Dock of the Bay restaurant sits on a pier reaching into the waters
of St. Andrew Bay, at the base of the east side of the Hathaway
Bridge. Whether you are arriving by boat or car, the breath taking
views of Panama City’s most beautiful sunsets are there for the taking.
New owner, Joshalyn Miller knows how gorgeous the view is as she makes
her way to work seven days a week. After a quick wave at a passing dolphin,
she starts by preparing the favorite dishes of the day.
As you walk through the door, the aroma of home-style cooking lingers in
the air. Tasty roast beef, tender pepper steak, BBQ chicken, country fried
steak, and homemade mashed potatoes are just a few of the menu items
sure to tempt your taste buds. For seafood lovers, dig into a crispy fried
grouper basket, oysters, shrimp or scallops. Or you can enjoy an oversized
juicy cheeseburger and a frosty cold beer at the outside tiki bar.
This season, Joshalyn introduces Executive Chef Drayton Douglas Wade
III, a graduate of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Academy in London, England.
Chef Drayton’s feature dishes include Bruschetta, Grouper Panama, Chicken
Marsala, and steaks that will melt in your mouth. But save room for
dessert! One of the best-kept secrets in Bay County is Joshalyn’s homemade
coconut crème pie and cheesecake!
If the views and amazing menu aren’t enough, get a taste of live entertainment
with favorite local performers to complete your evening in a real
down-home, fun atmosphere. Make new friends and dance the night away
as you watch the sunset. After dinner feel free to explore the marina. Sun
Harbor Marina is a full service marina with pontoon rentals, real estate offices,
fishing and diving charters, a gift shop, and home of the one and only
Betsy Ann River Boat.
Dock of the Bay is open year round serving lunch and dinner seven days a
week. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can treat yourself to a very
affordable breakfast too. For more information call (850) 785-9919.
Although many of Kingfish’s patrons are
hotel guests at the Bay Point Marriott,
everyone can enjoy the restaurant’s
casual, elegant regional cuisine, its first-class
wine list, and its intimate
ambiance with a view of
St. Andrews Bay. A large
percentage of the hotel guests
are well-traveled visitors
with discerning palates and
a desire to try something
new. Kingfish’s dedication
to “Local products with local
flavors using local seafood”
has always supported its
contemporary menu and
alluring sushi collection.
While the mainstream of
Panama City Beach cuisine
has always been Local, Fresh
Seafood, Nuevo Latino (New Chef Julio Lucero
Latin) cuisine is a growing
dining trend. It is what set the South Beach,
Miami restaurant scene on fire fifteen years ago.
In August 2007, Executive Chef Julio Lucero
joined Kingfish’s culinary team, weaving a
tapestry of international flavors into its kitchen
and dining rooms. “My dishes use a mixture
of items that appeal to many palettes and
tastes,” says Chef Lucero, whose Mexican
heritage and gastronomic experience at worldclass
resorts in Palm Springs, California and
Gilbert, Arizona have brought a Nuevo Latino
influence, a Southwestern flamboyance, a dash
of Mediterranean and a whisper of Pacific-Rim
to Kingfish – with an inspired, seductive and
dazzling new menu.
26 The Circuit March/April 2008
Take, for example,
Chef Julio’s Blue Crab
Anaheim Rellano
stuffed with tender blue crab meat atop a creamy,
roasted corn polenta cake and
fried red steak tomato, served
with avocado salsa and a
splash of tomatillo broth.
Intoxicating! The roasted
Anaheim chile gives this
traditional Latin dish quite the
kick, and its elegant, inventive
presentation belongs in an art
gallery. Another succulent
Southwestern starter with
a mild bang of its own, the
Honey Chili Glazed Shrimp
with tomatillo corn salsa,
is cooled down by a lovely
roasted poblano cream.
The signature Kingfish
Calamari, served with a
thick roasted banana pepper aioli – is also great
served on top of a Caesar salad. A glass of the
fruity, sassy Sonoma-Cutrer Chardonnay, a 2006
vintage from the Russian River Valley, packs
the perfect punch to match the sensual flavor
combinations of these appetizers.
Cooking is an art form; it involves feeling. The
extraordinary platter of sushi and sashimi I
was presented one evening by Sushi Chef Matt
Washington was the most amazingly beautiful
dish I have ever encountered. Everything, from
the sesame-infused Tako (octopus) Carpaccio
to the buttery smoked Salmon Sashimi rosebud
was luscious and eccentric. The Black Dragon
Roll actually looked like a dragon, curling around
the platter and filled with soft shell crab, green
onion, avocado, spicy mayo and smoked eel.
Next to the fresh Wakame (seaweed) Salad and
Ika Sansai (marinated squid
salad) was a dollop of creamy
salmon roe parked in a carved
cucumber boat fan-tailed with
lemon slices, adding brilliance
and dimension to the platter.
But the King Roll is what stole
my heart, a provocative dance
of flavors, colors and textures
including lobster, shrimp,
tuna, red snapper, salmon and
three different caviars. Matt’s
impressive sushi repertoire also
includes (to name just a few)
the Marley Roll, a maverick
marvel of unagi (eel), crabmeat,
cream cheese and tempura crunchies; the BPC
Roll featuring shrimp with carrots, scallions,
avocado, basil and sweet chile; and the tropical
Island Roll with crabmeat, sweet peppers,
avocado, mango and shredded coconut. Aloha!
All dinners at Kingfish begin with a lovely
basket of poppy seed, sunflower and pumpkin
seed artisan rolls and crisp lavash, with a small
plate of herb-infused dipping oil. The Potato
Crusted Grouper, a Kingfish signature, is an
imaginative celebration of pan seared grouper
encased in paper-thin slices of potato (the French
call this cooking technique en papier…translated
“in paper”), served atop savory sautéed spinach
and lump crab meat with a wild mushroom
risotto, then finished with a creamy roasted
fennel sauce infused with hints of tarragon and
Pernod, a French elixir made with star anise
and other aromatic herbs. The Maple Glazed
Prime Ribeye, another ingenious work of art, is
served alongside a tower of oven roasted Roma
tomatoes, asparagus, artichokes, fresh garlic,
thyme and herb roasted fingerling potatoes, then
finished with a rich BBQ compound butter. A
glass of the smooth, mellow Edna Valley Pinot
Noir (2006) from San Luis Obispo is the perfect
accompaniment to the steak, with its glowing
trace of cinnamon spice. Of course, one cannot
sample everything in one visit, and on future
visits I will try the Mediterranean-influenced
Pasta Margherita with its fresh basil, Kalamata
olives and roasted garlic olive oil; the eclectic
Stuffed Airline Breast of Chicken with goat
GOING GREEN
2008 Awards Winners
The Chamber’s Annual Awards Banquet,
held February 22nd at Edgewater Beach
Resort, was a beautiful semi-formal gala that
awarded six individuals for their dedication
to and accomplishments in the Panama City
Beach community.
The Pioneer of the Year Award, which
recognizes a person’s leadership,
accomplishments and vision, was awarded
to Wes Burnham. The Hank Swicord
Distinguished Service Award, given to a
person who has provided endless hours of
dedication and service, went to Deborah
Hunt. The Small Business Person of the
Year Award, given to a Chamber business
owner(s) with 25 or less employees, was
presented to Robert Carroll and Sean
McNeil of McNeil Carroll Engineering.
Emerald Coast Photo
Kevin Cannon, owner of Emerald Coast Photo, moved from
California to Panama City at the age of 17. He developed his
photography business by using the same principles he learned at
a young age. After selling gold jewelry door to door and playing
“Find the Queen” with three cards on a street corner, Cannon
turned the dedication he used to survive into a thriving business in
Panama City Beach. “My photo skills were nothing like today, but
what I had was drive, great marketing skills, and a lot of hustle.”
30 The Circuit March/April 2008
The Jean L.Shafer Ambassador of the Year
title, awarded to a Chamber Ambassador(s)
with dedication and high participation at
Chamber events, was given to Terry and
Carol Hook.
Pictured on top, from left: Award winners Wes
Burnham, Deborah Hunt, Robert Carroll and
Sean McNeil. Above left: Terry and Carol Hook.
Above right: Tom Morgan, President of St. Joe
Commercial, gives the keynote presentation.
Cannon traded a few pieces of jewelry for a 35mm camera, photographed tourists on the
beach, and then delivered the pictures to their hotel for a $5 fee. He worked hard on the
beach for years, even exclusively securing photo referrals at many major resorts including
the Holiday Inn Sunspree. Taking thousands of pictures sharpened his eye, and he
transformed into an artist in high demand by people wanting exquisite photos.
“I believe this beach is sculpting into one great big class act, and I’m proud to be a part of
it,” says Cannon, whose work can be viewed in Capt. Anderson’s, Andy’s Flour Power Café,
or his new studio at Pier Park. Visit www.emeraldcoastphoto.com for more information.
RECOGNITION
AL McCAMBRY was
the keynote speaker
at Tyndall Air force
Base’s Black History
Celebration Event on
February 7th. The topic
surrounded Carter G.
Woodson and the Origins
of Multiculturalism. He
also spoke on February 24th at New Hope
Missionary Baptist Church in Lynn Haven
as the keynote speaker for their Black History
Month Celebration. As the topic suggests,
the emphasis was to remind us that in order to
succeed in a town, city, state, region or country,
we must understand the accomplishments
of all races and that there is a “Fierce Urgency
of Now” per Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., to
continue to work together in a harmonious
cultural state of affairs toward one common
goal. That goal would be recognizing the fact
that we are all created equal and the condition
of embracing our differences is what makes
us strong.
recognized hotel business over 30 years ago.
Last month, on February 5th, Matt attended
Updates on Community, Education, Workforce and Governmental Affairs
FSU-Panama City
Dr. George DePuy, FSU-PC Dean
The annual Commencement
Ceremony for
FSU Panama City will
take place at the Marina
Civic Center on April
27th. About 400 people
complete bachelor’s or
master’s degrees from
our campus over the
course of each year and
we expect about 240 to
participate in the April ceremony. Many of the
graduates will be 22 year old students who have
gone straight through a community college program
and then two years at FSU Panama City to
complete a bachelor’s degree. But many other
bachelor’s or master’s graduates will be older
place-bound students who might not have been
able to complete their degree if it were not for
our campus.
The FSU Circus will begin performing in Panama
City Beach in June. The circus dates to 1946
but it has taken this long to have them establish a
summer home in Panama City Beach. This will
bring a major new tourist attraction to the area
and directly benefit the local economy.
The research park in Lynn Haven is coming closer
to reality. President Bush has signed legislation
that will allow the Air Force to covey forty
acres of waterfront property to FSU as the cornerstone
of a larger tract of land. The remainder
of the land is be used as a location for high tech
companies that should bring well paying jobs to
the area.
What an exciting time
in Panama City Beach!
Pier Park stores are finally
opening and there
are still more to come.
Restaurants Ruby Tuesday
and Olive Garden
have permits as of
February 1 and will be
building. The architectural
features and design of the walking mall
have a bright sunny Florida look and it is a place
that most of us will want to spend the day—shopping,
eating, and checking out the other visitors.
Look for more commercial development outside
of Pier Park but adjacent to it.
Commencement Ceremony at FSU-PC
St. Joe Company has applied for annexation into
the City for the Breakfast Point development. It
too will be a showplace with shops, restaurants,
homes, and apartments
coming on-line during
the next 10 or 15 years. A
poorly kept secret is that
there will be a new Publix
Supermarket built just off
north Beckrich.
As old motels were torn
down on the Front Beach
Road, many worried
that affordable rooms
would not be available;
however, motels are being
planned and built in
many locations on beach
access streets and PCB
Parkway. Hampton Inn
on the Parkway and Lantana,
Best Western next to
TGIF, Mainstay near the
bridge and several others
will be opening in the
near future.
The City Pier, tackle shop
and snack bar have been
torn down and work begun
on constructing a
new pier and small accessory
buildings. The eighteen
month project will be finance primarily with
FEMA funds. When Bay County rebuilds the M.
B. Miller Pier, we will be the only City on the
Gulf with twin piers.
The Ripley’s Entertainment Phase 2 appears to be
ready for construction. The new entertainment
feature will be located across the street from the
Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum. People continue
to ask “What is there to do in Panama City
Beach?” This along with some other planned projects
will help fill the family entertainment needs.
Employment Center
Opens at Pier Park
Kimberly Bodine, Executive Director
Gulf Coast Workforce Board
The Workforce Center
has teamed up with Simon
Property Group,
the Panama City Beach
Chamber of Commerce,
Trammel Crow Residential,
J. C. Penney,
and several other contributing
parties to open
an Employment Center
in Pier Park.
Pier Park is expected to create 4,000 new jobs
from more than 150 employers in the coming
months. “My primary concern has been the
staffing requirements,” said T. Cowart, Property
Manager for Simon Property Group. “The
Workforce Center staff has gone to great lengths
to ensure the merchants have ample number of
candidates. The cooperative effort between the
Workforce Center and Trammel Crow has been
instrumental in the success of Pier Park.”
Employment Center at Pier Park
All the services provided at the Employment
Center will be free of charge. For job seekers
these services include assistance with job search,
as well as help in applying and submitting applications
for employment. Thanks to a contribution
by J. C. Penney, the Center is equipped
with laptop computers that allow job seekers to
apply for jobs directly online, utilizing “Employ
Florida Marketplace”(www.employflorida.com),
Florida’s web-based employment and labor market
delivery system. For Pier Park employers,
the Center provides a place to conduct interviews
and on-site job fairs in order to recruit and fill job
openings. Furthermore, employers can tap into
the Employ Florida Marketplace tool and use it
to recruit, screen, and match applicants to specific
jobs.
“There is a great deal of strength in partnerships
and the Pier Park Employment Center illustrates
that clearly,” said Kim Bodine, Executive Director
of the Gulf Coast Workforce Board. “Bringing
together the resources of many partners will
help meet the employment goals of Pier Park and
benefit the entire region.”
The Employment Center will be located at the
west side of Pier Park and be staffed by professionals
from the participating partners. It will be
open six days per week, Monday through Saturday,
from now until May.
The Workforce Center is operated by Gulf Coast
Community College through funding and support
provided by the Gulf Coast Workforce
Board. For information regarding the Pier Park
Employment Center, please contact Deeyon Kalil
Gulf Coast Community
College Focuses on
Industry Needs
Dr. Jim Kerley, GCCC President
Over the last few weeks,
Gulf Coast Community
College has asked you,
the community, for
your input to help shape
and guide our strategic
planning process. What
a response we have received!
The research
phase is almost over
and I have read some of
the comments that were made during the public
forums. I feel privileged and humbled the way
you talk about this institution and this area, and I
thank you again for participating in the process.
I would also like to thank the Chamber for hosting
the session at the Boardwalk Beach Resort.
A strong partnership with the Chamber membership
will be key as we move forward.
One thing we heard over and over was that you
wanted to become more engaged with the college
in a number of various areas, and much of
that centered on workforce training. We will continue
to expand our workforce education and certificate
programs and are committed to align our
education and training to local industry needs.
In the last issue of The Circuit, the Chamber’s
Education Committee published a set of goals
that were created at the Board Planning Retreat.
Those goals included: more technical and applied
learning programs; expanding internships,
apprentice and mentoring programs; and supporting
the importance of a post-secondary education
through vocational training and certificate
programs. As we define our strategic plan, those
critical needs will be addressed. Education plays
a powerful role in our future, and our collaborative
efforts will benefit everyone.
FSU Flying High Circus
Comes to the Beach
Panama City Beach welcomes its newest seasonal
attraction in June – Circus by the Sea, featuring
the renowned Florida State University (FSU)
Flying High Circus. Known for providing 60
years of spellbinding entertainment, FSU junior
and senior student performers
will take to the stage in their
first Florida summer home.
Designed to entertain the
young and the young at heart,
Circus by the Sea brings endearing
family entertainment
and summertime amusement
to the residents and 4.5 million
visitors who flock to the
area every year.
Ideally located in Frank
Brown Park, Circus by the
Sea will welcome crowds
of up to 2,000 nightly in the
massive, air conditioned tent, adorned in red
and yellow. Audiences will enjoy a dazzling
three-ring aerial and stage production full of
jaw-dropping routines that will rival any professional
troupe.
performers will add to the excitement throughout
the season.
The Circus by the Sea project has been in the
works since February 2007, according to Circus
Presenter Donald Hamrick. In a happy coincidence,
Hamrick approached the FSU Flying
High Circus about establishing a Florida summer
home just as they were considering adding
a Florida site and expanding beyond Georgia’s
Callaway Gardens, which has hosted the performers
for nearly half a century.
Under the new beachside big top, the performers
will also spend their days instructing children
ages 7 to 12 in the area’s first-ever Circus Camps.
The camps will include lessons in a wide variety
of thrilling circus performance skills, from balancing
acts to juggling, and even flying high on
the trapeze. Available from June 23 - July 31, the
week-long (Monday - Thursday) Circus Camps
run from 9:00 am to 2:00
pm. Children will receive
one-on-one instruction with
FSU performers, in addition
to playing games and participating
in the many recreational
activities available at
Frank Brown Park.
high Voltage Membership
Take Your Membership to the Next Level
We’re starting a new chapter in The Greater Panama City
Beaches Chamber of Commerce this year. In a matter
of weeks, we will be moving into our new office at 309
Beckrich. With this exciting new beginning, we decided to redesign our
“Membership Report” and make it more useful for the members. In the
coming issues, keep reading for useful tips and observances about how
to amp up the voltage so you can get the most out of your membership.
Did you know that at February’s Friday at the Beach we had almost 600
people at the Bay Point Marriott? Start seeing people at Chamber events
not only as potential friends, but potential business partners. We’ve seen
some dynamic business partnerships begin at Chamber functions, and
want all our members to make these valuable connections.
Imagine how many business leads you would have if you had handed
out 600 business cards February 8th? Our suggestion is to not only
spend time catching up with friends at Chamber events, but working
the room. Talk to everyone you don’t know at these gatherings, and
turn them into business connections and friends. If the huge crowds
are a bit much for you, talk to Tyler and Skip ahead of time. We can
start the ball rolling by introducing you to a few people at the beginning
of the meeting. As always, if you need anything, email us at Tyler@
ambassador Update
& Happenings Around Town
The first quarter of the year has quickly passed, and the Ambassador
Team has been in a whirlwind of activity. With the opening of
the many new businesses in Pier Park and other locations on and
off the beach, we’ve hardly had time to catch our breath. It is always
exciting to celebrate with the proud owners of new businesses at their
Grand Openings. Their justifiable pride in seeing their “dream come
true” is an inspiration to us all.
As we feature the many fine restaurants available to us in this area, allow
me to highlight one of our many Ambassador activities: the Ambassador
Lunch. The Ambassador team meets on the first and third Fridays of
every month at one of our excellent local dining establishments to enjoy
networking, good times, and of course, great food! Deals are made, ideas
exchanged, and relationships established, all in the midst of a really good
time. If you or your employees are not currently active in the Ambassador
program, call the Chamber office and sign up today. It’s easy; it’s fun, and
very rewarding.
Congratulations to Terry and Carol Hook, recipients of the Jean L. Shafer
Ambassador of the Year Award for 2008. Terry and Carol are invaluable
members of our team and leaders in our community, and our lives are
enriched by all they do.
Ambassadors, thank you for all you do to make our team a success. I’ve
gotta run…Skip and Tyler are adding more to the schedule. See you at
