DEMONSTRATING
CHRIST'S LOVE
PCBC members to serve others around
Dallas on 1:8 Day
Hundreds of PCBC volunteers will spread out across Dallas on Saturday, May 1, to serve others and demonstrate
Christ’s love. The third annual 1:8 Day – previously called Ministry Day – will give PCBC members the opportunity
to perform acts of compassion, build relationships, share their faith and disciple others.
“Our goal is to meet needs so that people will see Jesus and want to know more about who he is and why we’re
serving in his name,” said Ann Roberts, who is organizing the day of service.
Individuals, families, Sunday school classes and departments are encouraged to choose a project from a list of 20,
and then sign up online at www.pcbc.org/ministryday. Those without Internet access can complete a registration
form available at a Connection Center. Volunteers will receive instructions and information about their projects from
a team leader.
The list includes five projects in the Vickery neighborhood, several projects at and around Cornerstone Baptist
Church in South Dallas, installing smoke detectors and welcoming members of the U.S. military arriving at DFW
International Airport.
The day kicks off at 8 a.m. with breakfast in the Great Hall. The church will celebrate God’s goodness with a video
and faith stories in all services on Sunday, May 2.
“This is what we’re called to do,” Ann said. “As a congregation,
it’s a blessing to come to our church building and worship
God, but it’s also our job to be Christ’s ambassadors and
serve the community in a missional way.”
The name of the day refers to Acts 1:8, which instructs believers
to be Christ’s “witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” PCBC’s Jerusalem
is Dallas. Learn more at www.pcbc.org/oneeight.
“Sometimes we get into a pattern of coming to church to
receive, when we really should be the servers,” Ann said. “We
should be Christ’s ambassadors – sharing the gospel and sharing
his love and forgiveness. Sometimes we do that through
labor and meeting needs.”
Te quiero como una madre
(I love you like a mother)
Written by Niki White, PCBC member, and senior at Highland Park High School
H
er brown eyes shone; I’d never
seen such a breathtaking hue of
cinnamon. She wrapped her wiry arms
around my hips and pressed her damp
face into my stomach, not bothering to
conceal her tears.
“Te quiero como una madre.”
She relaxed her arms and left me
frozen in the breezeway, overcome and
breathless. My broken Spanish needed
no translator to convey this girl’s love
that shattered my heart.
A group from PCBC took a trip to
Antigua, Guatemala, to spend time at
the girls’ orphanage Manchen. We arrived
at a cream concrete
building with a Spanish style
roof, wooden bars latched
to every window, resembling
a minimum security prison. The cobblestone
street reeked with the stench of
poverty.
I ducked into the barred doorway, and
my eyes adjusted to the deep shadows
from within the walls. The girls all wore
a uniform of donated t-shirts and jeans,
and it reminded me of a dark haired,
forlorn army that spoke in a Spanish
hum that I struggled to decipher.
The four following days, my dad and
I led a group
of about twenty girls through
various activities. Sitting on the side and
keeping to herself, one small girl with
skinny arms wrapped tightly around
her legs, watched her friends playing.
Instead of joining them, she gripped
the grass and tore at it anxiously. Then
abruptly, she dropped the grass, rubbed
her tiny fingers over her belly, and disappeared
from the courtyard.
PCBC’s sports, children’s and
youth ministries are gearing up
for summer camps that will help
young Christians deepen their
faith and introduce nonbelievers
to Christ and to the church.
“If you really show love to a family’s kids, you’re
really going to make an impact on that family,”
said Damon Berry, Minister of Sports Outreach.
The camps include about 82 sports and activities
camps for elementary-age children, Fish Camp for
children who have completed third grade and not
yet entered seventh grade, and Thee Camp for
middle-school and high-school students.
Sports & Activities Camps
About 1,300 children in kindergarten through
sixth grade are expected to enroll in one or more
camps that will include instruction in activities
ranging from art and cooking to basketball, flag
football and tennis. Many of the camps, including
the popular Camp Dayspring, are run by PCBC
staff members. Others are run by individuals that
PCBC contracts with to provide instruction.
Many of the children who participate in the camps
are not from PCBC, and some do not attend any
church.
“Sports has become one of the most effective
ways to reach people,” Damon said. “There are
lots of young families around us who have young
kids, and by sharing with these kids, by encouraging
and investing in them, we make an impact
on their families. This is a huge outreach. We’re
meeting felt needs and hoping to lead people to
see the real need of finding a relationship
with Christ.”
Register for sports camps online at:
www.pcbc.org/summerfun.
Thee Camp
About 300 middle-school and high-school students
will travel to a Sky Ranch camp in northeast Oklahoma
July 11-16 for PCBC’s annual Thee Camp.
“This is a major outreach for us,” said Andrew Heard,
minister to high school students. “About 25 percent
of the students who go are visitors. Thee Camp is
the core of how we get people moving into a serious
relationship with Christ.”
Students are encouraged to join a D-group for discipleship
and Bible study after they return from Thee
Camp. The camp also is a way for students to take a
break and focus on God. They’re not allowed to bring
cell phones. They attend worship services each morning
and evening, in addition to participating in plenty
of quirky games and activities.
“For a lot of the students, just getting a break from
the everyday bombardment from the world is essential
for spiritual reflection and development. This may be
the first time that, for seven days straight, they have
had a quiet time.”
Register for Thee Camp at:
www.pcbcstudents.org.
Pray
Fish Camp
More than 100 children, who have completed
3rd through 6th grade, are expected to attend
the five-day Fish Camp, which will be held June
22–26 at Sabine Creek Ranch in Royse City. Many
of the children who attend the camp are invited by
friends. Teamwork is the theme of this year’s camp.
All the church’s camps and activities need continual
prayer from PCBC members, and some also need additional
volunteers and financial support for students
to attend.
“These camps are vital for PCBC’s year-round ministry,”
Andrew said. “We need people praying for
relationships among the kids and for them to develop
deeper relationships with Jesus Christ.”
“Our goal is to tell them more about Jesus
Christ,” said Marty Lewis, minister of Childhood
Education. “Many of them become Christians at
camps, and we want to encourage them to grow
in Christian disciplines such as having a personal
quiet time.”
8 PCBC.ORG
The annual camp includes activities such as sports,
crafts, swimming, Bible study and worship.
2010
Teachers prepare students academically and coaches equip
them physically, but the church alone commissions students to
go onto their college campuses as ambassadors for Jesus Christ.
Our church is honored to do this for the Class of 2010. On
Senior Commissioning Sunday, April 18th, we gathered around
the students as a church and encouraged them—telling them
they are not alone as they fulfill the Great Commission, and their
church will pray for them and will serve as a place of rest and
rejuvenation when they are back in town.
After asking around, I discovered she was fourteen
and her name was Marybel. Her step-father had impregnated
her, and she was planning on raising her baby at
the orphanage. Sickened with grief for her situation, I
was still struck by her positive interaction with the other
girls. Always smiling, laughter crinkling the corners of her
eyes, she surprised me with her open, gentle demeanor. I
burned with shame when I contrasted her simple satisfaction
in her life with my own.
The other girls lined up to jump rope, and Marybel
settled into the grass to watch. I sat next to her and held
up a deck of UNO.
“Do you want to play?” I asked her in Spanish.
She smiled at my Texan accent, nodded, and carefully
picked up her cards with a knowing eye. We played several
hands and then moved on to Pick-up Sticks, jacks, and
Barrel of Monkeys. After each game, she won with grace
or giggled when she lost. Both of us enjoyed the other’s
company, our friendship overcoming the language barrier.
Tearful goodbyes pressed around me on the last day. I
wrote a letter to Marybel, telling her I loved her and that
I believe, wholeheartedly, God loves her and will never
leave her. I found her sitting on a concrete block next to
a translator, and I passed her a note scribbled on yellow
construction paper. Embarrassed, I slunk to the side of the
breezeway as a breath of mountain wind cooled my burning
face.
Suddenly, I felt her tiny arms wind around me. She
smiled up at me, her face radiating, but her tears only accentuated
her beauty.
“Te quiero como una madre.”
Spending a week loving the poor, hungry, and abused
could never make up for my prior seventeen years of
ignorance. I’m blessed with the opportunities Marybel will
never have, and it’s my job to reach out to those around
me and hopefully, get the chance to see my Guatemalan
friend again.
the church as it was, is, and could be.
