Lunch on the Grounds
and Francis Chan
As we get ready for the fall of 2010 we have been examining
ways to re-ignite our passion for Christ and for the mission of
His church. As you know in February of 2009, Park Cities Baptist
Church committed to make the 1:8 Initiative our focus as a
church. This coming fall, we are going to be adding more ways to
communicate our heart as a church and involve more people in
the Kingdom work God has called us to do. “God has placed this
uniquely gifted group of people here at this time for a reason. It’s
exciting!” said Miller Cunningham, Senior Pastor – Leadership.
As a part of our expanding the scope of 1:8 through the church,
we will host the first 1:8 Expo. It will be a time where all of the
ministries of our church are represented to the church. Members
will have the opportunity to learn about the varying ministries and
find a place to serve as God’s witness here on our campus, in our
community and around the world. “God has called us to serve
and change the world,” said Cunningham. “You are an Acts 1:8
witness when you take a meal to a neighbor, care for children in
Sunday School, volunteer to read to a child at one of the schools
or share God’s word on a mission trip in Texas, the US and around
the world.”
Hundreds of children and youth will have participated in
PCBC’s activities and camping ministries by the end of the
summer, as the church introduces nonbelievers to Christ and
encourages young Christians to deepen their walk with Him.
PCBC activities
Vacation Bible School was held
June 7–11 for children in pre-kindergarten
through sixth grade. Nearly
1,600 children enrolled in VBS this year.
Twenty-two accepted Christ as their
savior during the week.
“VBS is important because we use
fun and creative ways to engage kids
with Jesus Christ,” said Marty Lewis,
minister of Childhood Education. “Once
they come in and see the excitement
and the good news that’s presented, we
have a very fertile field for evangelism.”
impact hundreds of
children and youth
Fish Camp was held June 22–26 at
Sabine Creek Ranch in Royce City.
Nearly 130 students in third through
sixth grade attended, and six made
professions of faith.
“They always have a blast at Fish
Camp, and we encourage them to learn
more about Jesus Christ and strengthen
their personal relationship with Him,”
Marty said. Activities included sports,
crafts, swimming, Bible study and
worship.
Sports & activities camps were
expected to draw about 1,900 children
in kindergarten through sixth grade
during the summer. The camps included
instruction in activities such as art and
cooking, and sports such as flag football,
soccer, tennis and volleyball. More
than 400 children attended the popular
Camp Dayspring.
“Students can go to camps such as
these at other places, but having them
on our church property connects them to
the ministries of PCBC and engages them
in Christ-based activities,” said Laurie
Tharp, assistant activities director. “The
outreach to our community is huge.”
Thee Camp was expected to attract
about 300 middle-school and highschool
students. The camp, which was
to be held July 11–16 at a Sky Ranch
camp in northeast Oklahoma, provides
the youth a break from their everyday
lives to focus on relationships with each
other and with Jesus Christ.
Religion that God our Father accepts as
pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans
and widows in their distress. – JAMES 1:27
Manpower
ministers to
widows in need
Once a month, on a Saturday morning, a group of
up to a dozen men look after PCBC’s widows and
single mothers who need help tackling household
chores and repairs.
The men, who call their group Manpower, take
inspiration from passages in James and 1 Timothy.
Their projects have included moving Christmas decorations
into the attic, cleaning garages, changing
light bulbs, trimming trees, moving appliances and
furniture, rebuilding part of a wooden deck, and
repairing tile.
“Our goal is to minister to widows in their need,”
said Steve Corder, who coordinates the monthly projects.
“The men want to do this because the Scriptures
compel it. The bonus is the feeling that comes
after doing what they know they ought to do.”
Manpower, which helps single mothers in addition
to widows, works one Saturday morning
a month. Steve would like to see Sunday school
classes create their own Manpower teams to help
widows and single moms in need and also promote
fellowship.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than for Christians
to do what they’re supposed to do and then
be rewarded with a genuine, heart-felt smile and
‘thank you.’ That makes it worth the sacrifice of
time and effort,” Corder said.
For more information about Manpower or to request the
group’s assistance, contact Steve at 214.368.8286 or
A Clean Testimony
Shower trailer serves mission trips, disaster relief projects and secular events.
Keith Lawrence had worked in baking heat with a youth
group on a mission trip from Oak Ridge Baptist Church
in Portland, Texas, so the shower felt very good.
“We’ve been out there in the heat all day, and we’re
soaking wet,” Keith said. “I don’t know what we’d do in this
situation without the showers. They’re critical to everybody’s
health and well-being. We’ve got to have someplace to
refresh and recharge.”
Keith and about 250 other
members of a World Changers
mission in June were staying
at Casa View Baptist Church in
East Dallas, and working during
the day to help the elderly and
needy. A shower unit provided
by PCBC and managed by Stan
Knight provided six shower stalls
as well as clean towels, wash
cloths, body wash and shampoo.
A shower unit from another
church also was on site at Casa
View Baptist.
“These are the best showers,” said Connie Weaver, who
was an adult leader on the trip from Wynn Baptist Church in
Arkansas. “We’re hot and tired. The showers are really good.
They’re air-conditioned, and they have hot and cold water.
It’s very nice.”
PCBC member Stan Knight with the shower unit provided by PCBC and managed
by Stan. The unit has made 29 trips to provide showers and laundry services
for mission trips, disaster relief projects and at events such as bicycle rallies.
Over the last four years, PCBC’s shower unit has made
29 trips to provide showers and laundry services for mission
trips, disaster relief projects and at events such as bicycle
rallies. In addition to six showers, the unit carries washing
machines and dryers.
Disaster relief projects are managed by Texas Baptist Men,
while the PCBC team serves at other events. The unit spent five
months in Galveston after Hurricane
Ike struck the Gulf Coast two
years ago. Volunteers manning the
trailer there provided volunteers
and victims 7,500 showers and
washed about 2,500 loads
of laundry.
Stan appreciates the opportunity
to serve participants at secular
events such as bicycle rallies,
where he and other volunteers
put up signs promoting the free
showers.
“We have a chance to share
Christ with some people and have
a Christian influence in a secular environment,” he said. “A lot
of people ask, ‘How do you make any money if it’s free?” he
said. “They have no concept of Christians doing things out of
the goodness of their hearts. That’s very exciting.”
PCBC's summer outreach to elementary-age
students in the Vickery community began in
June and will continue into the upcoming
school year.
REACHING OUT
to Vickery
“God wants us to reach out into the community – our
Jerusalem,” said Lorri Lamberth, director of Children’s
Ministries. “There are so many people from so many
cultures so close to our church that it’s like going on a
mission trip. It’s easy to build relationships with these
children and their families. It’s what God wants us to do,
and it’s right here by our back door.”
Champs Camp was expected to attract about 200
children July 19–22. Students at Hotchkiss, Jack Lowe
and Dan D. Rogers elementary schools were invited to
attend the camp, where they could choose to work on
skills in soccer, basketball, cheer/dance, tennis or football.
The program included times for worship and a Bible
story, as well as sports. The students and their families
also are invited to attend church at PCBC, and a church
bus picks up visitors at a central location, Lorri said.
The Back to School Blast program provides packages
of school supplies to students at Jack Lowe and Dan
D. Rogers elementary schools. The schools will distribute
the supplies as the school year begins.
The Kids Hope USA mentoring program will
resume at Dan D. Rogers Elementary School in the fall,
with volunteers from PCBC spending one hour a week
with students.
“The program is based on one child, one mentor,
one church, one school, one hour a week,” Lorri said.
“It works beautifully. The students and mentors build
relationships that last, and the effort improves school
performance. Last year, 100 percent of the students who
had mentors passed the reading section of the TAKS
achievement test.”
The program needs an additional 25
volunteers who can spend one hour
a week working one-on-one with an
elementary-age student.
PCBC is launching a program
called Weekly Readers at
Hotchkiss Elementary School
this year. The program will support
classrooms that are comprised of
children who are recent immigrants
to the United States and who don’t
speak English.
“In these classes, one teacher may
have 26 students in a class where
there are seven or eight languages
spoken,” Lorri said. “They would
love for volunteers to come and
read a beginning-level book so the
students can hear how our language
sounds. It will be very easy
for volunteers to get involved, and
they don’t have to know any of the
languages.”
Summer Mission Trips "Put
Feet to our Faith"
Summer is a great time for mission trips, and groups in Russia, Guatemala,
Cuba, and South Texas will benefit from PCBC’s ministries this season.
RUSSIA
PCBC’s orchestra took its first international mission trip to Russia in June. The 30-piece traveling
group played in concert halls in the Saint Petersburg area and Moscow during the 10-day journey.
“We were blessed even more than the people there,” said Johnny Fuller, associate minister
of music and orchestra conductor. “Their spirit and tears blessed us, and the presentation of
the gospel message meant so much to them.”
GUATEMALA
Our PCBC high school students went to Guatemala in late June to minister to children in
San Luis Pinula.
A family mission trip to Guatemala is scheduled July 30–August 4. PCBC members will
minister to orphans, reach out to the community, and support churches.
CUBA
From July 10–17, a group of 11 PCBC members traveled to Cuba. They helped lead VBS at
two sister churches, at which about 1,400 children participated. They were pleased to report
that Christ is doing amazing things in this challenging place. They felt and appreciated the
many prayers by our church family.
SOUTH TEXAS
PCBC led three short-term trips to South Texas this summer.
About 12 members from the Robinson Department, Parker Department and the Elliston/
Pryor Class teamed with 10 volunteers from New Wine Church in Harlingen to conduct
vacation Bible school in the mornings and work on construction projects in the afternoons
during a June 23–27 trip. In addition, about 175 members of the community there
attended a Saturday afternoon cookout. The group supported Monte Alto Baptist Church
and Iglesia Bautista La Gloria.
A family mission trip sponsored by the Anderson Department July 21–25 for adults and
their grade-school children. The group was to travel to Brownsville—PCBC’s first ministry
effort there—to conduct VBS, evangelize and build classrooms at a church.
Families from the Hudson/Turner Class were scheduled to visit the communities of Lasara
and Monte Alto on August 4–8 to distribute school supplies to children. “These mission
trips are life-changing experiences,” said John Parker, who leads PCBC’s ministries in South
Texas. “I can’t think of a person who’s gone on a trip who hasn’t come back changed and
who sees things in every aspect of their life differently. PCBC is changing the world for Jesus
Christ, and these trips put feet to our faith.”
Sunday school
is where the big
church becomes
warm and personal.
It's where
everybody knows
your name.
– DOROTHY WILKINSON,
PRIMETIME MINISTER
Sunday School:
Not Just for Kids
She was raised in another denomination. He was raised Baptist. They married,
and he wanted to do what he saw his mom and dad do over the
years—participate in a Sunday school class. She thought he was crazy. The
last time she’d gone to Sunday school, she wore patent leather Mary Janes
with lacy socks and tried to figure out why the boys in sixth grade with her
were so obnoxious at church. But she decided to give it a try. It wasn’t long
before she had made deep, lasting friendships and for the first time in her life, found a
place where someone would take the time to help her understand what the Bible really
says. Years later, she realized she had become a genuine follower of Christ in that class
and that the couples they met were still their dearest friends.
This is a true story about how Sunday school changed someone’s life. Park Cities
Baptist Church, like many other churches in the Baptist tradition, has a long-standing
and very strong program of Sunday school with classes for all ages. Among adults,
there are dozens of classes in all sizes and shapes. Many classes are based on age or
life stages; others are “elective” classes where anyone can participate. According to
Dorothy Wilkinson, minister to PrimeTime adults, “It is not uncommon for people to
visit several classes until they find the one where they feel most at home.”
Rodney Schell adds, “Sunday school is one of the most important things we do at
Park Cities Baptist Church. It accomplishes several critical needs for our members and
visitors, including outreach, ministry, missions mobilization, and discipleship.”
Perhaps the main reason so many PCBC people are members of Sunday school
classes is that, as Dorothy puts it, “Sunday school is where the big church becomes
warm and personal. It’s where everybody knows your name.”
Beginning August 29 there will be new classes forming within our Sunday
School ministry. A new 9:20 hour Sunday for students will begin and new
classes at the 9:20 hour for 40-Something adults. If you are not part of a
Sunday school class, maybe you should give it a try. A complete list of classes is
available at www.pcbc.org/sunday-morning-classes or you can download
a pdf of the catalog from www.pcbc.org/assets/images/pdfs/biblestudyclasses022410.pdf.
On Sunday mornings, greeters in the Connection centers
in the Narthex, the Commons, and the Activities Building are prepared to lead
you to a class of your choice. You can also contact the age-based ministers:
Here is a quick explanation of what Sunday school does best:
Reaching our Community. Sunday
school classes tend to be really good at
bringing in new members. Members are
aware that they are a small group and
might benefit from greater numbers.
Since classes are based on friendly relationships,
members naturally pull in their
friends from work or the neighborhood.
Ministry within the Church family. At
least once a week, Sunday school classes
get together and, in some form or fashion,
catch up on what’s going on in each
other’s lives. People can express their
triumphs as well as their struggles and
seek support if needed. Some classes
have organized care groups to systematically
check in with one another.
Involvement in Missions. One person
can do a great deal of good service
in God’s Kingdom. A group of people
can often do geometrically more good
service in God’s Kingdom. Sunday
school classes have the critical mass and
the cumulative resources to carry out
missions work, service projects or even
social events.
Discipleship. At Park Cities Baptist
Church, Sunday school classes are centered
on Bible study. Week in and week
out, the class can dig into the chapters
and verses—guided by a teacher/leader—to
learn the meaning of the Scriptures
and how they apply to one’s own
life and circumstances.
Communication. There is a rule of
thumb that people need to be touched
with a message at least three times for
them to remember it. At PCBC, events
and information go out in announcements
from the pulpit or in written
or online publications. Lots of times,
though, it’s the announcement or
discussion in a Sunday school class that
gets people to act.
Adult Education Classes
LifeTime begins on Wednesday, September 15th; although a few
classes will start a week earlier. Enrich and strengthen life through a
variety of different topics. Classes from discipleship to parenting to
current issues means there is something for everyone.
Whether you have every Wednesday night available or only one or
two, you can be a part of the excitement. Starting dates for classes
are staggered to meet your schedule.
LifeTime is a great place to bring co-workers or neighbors who do not
to build relationships.
Most classes start at 6:30 p.m., but note some classes will be offered
during the day—starting at 10:30 a.m. Classes are free unless
We have resources for all areas of life. The library team
uses confidentiality in helping others find the answers to
whatever resources they need or hope to find.
People of all ages come in looking for Bible study
resources, helpful books on life application topics, felt
needs, Christian lifestyle, and ministry. A very popular
area provides fiction and leisure reading of mystery,
intrigue, history, humor, human interest and romance.
Items include a wide variety of topics such as biography,
history, travel, health, cooking and current topics. Many
of these subjects are also available on CD or DVD.
A very complete children’s collection keeps children,
young families, grandparents, and even nannies, coming
to use the library resources every week. Frequent visitors
are our Preschool classes, Mother’s Day Out, Sunday
School classes, Day Camp, and Reading Clubs.
As a convenience, the Library has sale items which
Our library is “living” because through the years and
most every week members and guests make a provision
to the library “in memory of” or “in honor of” a friend
or loved one. The collection is continuing to grow with
newer titles and other resources. It is touching lives…
sometimes in other parts of the country and the world.
We are blessed with a library that is not standing still…it
Glimpse of Girl’s Ministry
by Erin Edwards, Girls Minister
Dual Hour
Sunday
Morning
as Mission
Missions—including mission trips—are an important and
exciting part of summer at Park Cities Baptist Church. Hundreds
of our people, especially our students, venture into the
unknown and uncharted as they find ways to serve God by
serving other people. This fall, the student ministry at PCBC
is presenting an unusual mission opportunity for our church
family: Dual hour for students on Sunday morning. That is,
we will now have Bible Study for grades 7–12 in both the
9:20 hour and the 10:50 hour.
We will have bands in both hours for high school and awesome
classes in both hours. Early hour high school will have
a 9th and 10th grade boys and girls class. Andrew Heard will
be teaching the boys and one of our best teachers from this
past year will be teaching the girls. High school will also have
open-division classes in the early hour. Open-division classes
will be open to any student, any age (9th–12th), any gender.
These classes will provide opportunities for groups of students
to grow and reach out to others beyond their normal
networks. The late hour will continue to run as it has this past
year, but there will be fewer classes per grade as a result of
students shifting to the early hour.
Junior High will also hold classes in the early hour, featuring
its full slate of staff, interns and lay leaders. Programming
will be identical for early and late hour Bible Study in junior
high and high school.
Wednesday night activities will continue without change:
Crosswalk for high school and Extreme for junior high students
will still be the primo Christian youth groups in this part
of Dallas.
We want to reach as many people
for the Kingdom as possible and dual
hour gives us more room to do so.
– ANDREW HEARD, HIGH SCHOOL MINISTER
Going to dual-hour Sunday morning Bible study for the
Student Ministry is a sort of exercise in missions. It is also an
exercise in stewardship. According to executive pastor Rodney
Schell, it allows the church to balance attendance and facilities
usage between the two worship hours. “We are crowding
classes into every classroom and even into offices during the
second hour,” Rodney explains, “but we have unused space
during the first hour. Rebalancing lets us make full usage of
our facilities. And experience has shown that when classes are
less crowded, they are more likely to add new members.”
God called me back to Park Cities to be the Girls’ Minister three years after I
had served here as an intern in the Student Ministry. I came back humbled
and blessed to be able to serve in this church again and work with our 7th
through 12th grade young women. Now, three months later I am overwhelmed
with all God has already made possible!
I want to give you a glimpse of what filled the night at our Girls’ Lock-In on June
17th. There was tons of chocolate, screaming, laughing, and karaoke. However, it was a
night of so much more. Approximately 30 girls from 7th–12th grade attended and heard
from Bethany Siggins. She discussed how the girls can go beyond just fitting in with their
fashion to being able to stand out, while still being stylish and honoring the Lord with how
they dress and act.
The Sunday before the Lock-In, more than 60 of the guys in our Student Ministry anonymously answered questions that
helped give our girls a clearer picture of how what they do and say really does affect those around them. During the Lock-In,
we spent some time discussing how knowing these truths and knowing who God calls us to be, should radically define how
we present ourselves to others and to Christ.
Did these girls get a lot of sleep? No. Were relationships built and the song the Y.M.C.A. sung loud and proud? Absolutely!
Most importantly, there was also a time of reflection and building blocks were put in place to help these young women confidently
step out and honor the Lord with how they present themselves to others.
On June 22nd we had a birthday party. Such an unassuming sentence and yet it was a day
that completely blessed my heart. To truly understand the depth
of the joy of this event, let me try to expand on why this was so
dear to my heart. The verse 2 Timothy 1:5 could have been said
of my family, “I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which
first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice
and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.” I was blessed to
see a faith that dwelt first in my grandmothers Jo and Betty and
then in my mother Robin. I also had the privilege to grow up in
a church where the different generations of women knew each
other and served together. It was a picture of Titus 2. Having
godly women to look to at all different stages in life was vital in
shaping the woman I am today.
In a larger church it is easier for these diverse generations to
miss each other. I truly believe it is imperative for the shaping of
this generation to learn from women who have lived longer and
learned many lessons from the Lord. I also believe this is a mutually
beneficial blessing as the younger and the more mature generations
get to interact with and love on each other. I knew these things to
be true and that this was how God desires for the church to look.
young adults
Our young adult community consists of people from three life stages: college students, single adults and
marrieds adults roughly in their 20’s. The life of each community is organized distinctly to reflect our
values of truth, community and mission.
College Students
The Hill - Wednesday Nights 7–8 p.m. the Commons in Hughes-Trigg Student Center @ SMU
The Hill community meets for a time of learning, prayer and planning toward missional involvement
on campus and in our city. Smaller groups of students meet regularly to cultivate spiritual practices
and habits that will keep our hearts connected to the mission of Jesus in the world. Contact our
Associate Minister of College Students, Mike Reading, mpreading@pcbc.org, 214.860.3952. Also
Young Single Adults
The Bridge - Sunday Mornings, 10:50 a.m.; Location:Collins Building Choral Hall
A few years ago our 20's singles community decided to call themselves The Bridge. A bridge is
a varied symbol that communicates both the sense of transition that one feels as a post college
20-something as well as the hospitality that we hope marks our community. For more information,
contact Michael Rudzena, Minister to Young Adults, at 214.860.1610 or mjrudzena@pcbc.org.
Nearly Wed Seminar
We also offer three times a year a nearly wed seminar that helps young couples who are seriously
dating or engaged to prepare for the biggest commitment of their life. The next Seminar is a 9-week
course held this fall, from September 12th–November 7th, 2010, on Sunday mornings, from 8:45–10:30
you do just that. Matt Larsen will return as our retreat speaker and we will facilitate several fun and challenging experiences designed
to help you relax and take steps in your spiritual formation. We hope you can make it!
expo
Continued from page 2
Here’s what the week will look like
On Sunday, October 3rd we will combine the Sanctuary,
Great Hall and the Amigos de Dios services in the Sanctuary
at 9:20 and 10:50 a.m. Sunday School will be held at the
normal hours. The 1:8 Expo, featuring displays from the
ministries of our church, will begin in the Great Hall.
We will have a barbeque lunch on the grounds to kick off
the 1:8 Expo. “People are invited to walk through the 1:8
Expo in the Great Hall after church to view and gather
information about our ministries,” said Brandon Boyd,
interim Director of Urban Missions. Sunday School Classes
and departments will have an opportunity to go through
the Expo during Sunday School.
On Monday, October 4th and Tuesday, October 5th,
PCBC will host special gatherings at the 1:8 Expo for
different ministry areas to further explain the work and
how to be involved. “It will be a great time for people to
find out more about God’s work in South Dallas, Vickery,
South Texas, Cuba, Guatemala, India, and Bangladesh,”
said Boyd.
On Wednesday, October 6th from 6:30–7:30 p.m. in
Ellis Chapel we will come together for a prayer gathering
to encourage people to come and pray for the needs of
the church and the world. There will be no LifeTime classes
that night.
On Thursday, October 7th all 1:8 Expo displays will be
removed from the Great Hall.
Francis Chan
Friday, October 8th
A unique opportunity to gather and recast the vision for
1:8 with special speaker, Francis Chan on Friday, October
8th at 7:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. He is one of the great,
dynamic teachers in the country today. Chan is the former
pastor of Cornerstone Community Church in Simi Valley,
CA, a Christian church he and his wife started in 1994.
He is also the Founder and Chancellor of Eternity Bible
College and author of the best-selling book, Crazy Love:
Overwhelmed by a Relentless God. The release of his
second book Forgotten God: Reversing our tragic neglect
of the Holy Spirit was in August 2009.
Chan regularly uses a variety of approaches to ensure his
messages are engaging and relevant. He talks about ‘What
the Bible is really saying’ and really living our lives that
way. He is not afraid of confronting lukewarmness, but
his challenge seems to draw more people to his message,
rather than pushing them away.
On Sunday, October 10th, we will have our regular
services and Bible Study at 9:20 and 10:50 a.m. with the
Amigos de Dios meeting at 10 a.m. in the Gymnasium.
Please pray that God
will use this week in
the life of our church to
grow our passion for Him
and for the work He has
called us to.
Intercessory Prayer Room
As another part of this very special 1:8 week, we will
be previewing our new Intercessory Prayer Room.
Since Park Cities Baptist Church's inception in 1939,
there has been a strong heritage of prayer among its
members. Through seven decades the Prayer Ministry
has blessed many and led the way for our church
in evangelizing the lost, in equipping the saints for
service, in engaging the servants for ministry and in
intercession for individuals and their needs.
In Isaiah 56:7 God says, "…my house will be a house
of prayer for all nations." Answering the call, PCBC is
pleased to announce the opening of the Intercessory
Prayer Room in October 2010. The purpose of the
Intercessory Prayer Room will be to promote and
support intercessory prayer in our church and to
provide support to the church's various existing prayer
initiatives.
Prayer is an integral part of our Acts 1:8 Initiative.
Prayers for our people who serve on our campus,
at an event in Vickery or South Dallas or for those
witnessing on a mission trip are crucial to God’s work,
as well as are the prayers for the people we encounter
through serving. We ask the congregation to join us
in this effort by praying for the Prayer Committee and
staff during these final days of preparation and to
prayerfully consider supporting this important ministry.
Volunteer intercessors will be needed to staff the
Intercessory Prayer Room and to join other believers in
praying for our church, community, state and world.
Watch for additional information in the upcoming
weeks, as well as orientation training sessions. For
further information, please contact Melissa McNeil
at mlmcneil@pcbc.org or 214.860.3917.
High School minister Andrew Heard agrees. “Dual hour
Bible study opens a world for our students and families
that can bring tremendous growth,” he says. “We want
to reach as many people for the Kingdom as possible and
dual hour gives us more room to do so. Christ’s body is the
means of reaching the world with his love and we are his
body.”
Junior High minister Jim Gribnitz points out that the
size of each Bible study group should decrease, which is
a good thing. “In smaller groups, individuals are better
able to open up and relate to one another. Teachers get to
know each student better, and can be even more effective
with their teaching.
Andrew Heard adds, “In the High School area, students
will have the freedom to choose which classes they attend.
They have the opportunity to make their class their own!
We are encouraging students to rally a group of their
friends together to go and help start a new class. This is
something new for our kids, but it is critical for the future
of our church. Our teenagers must take ownership of their
faith. Some are just hanging onto their faith and can’t
lead, but others are just hanging around because they
don’t know they should or could lead.”
There are about 600 kids in the student ministry, and
this change will affect every area of the church. Some
families and some adult classes will want to switch hours
of Bible study so their families can worship together. Because
we have both contemporary and traditional worship
services both early and late hour, every family has a full set
of options.
Both Jim and Andrew see this change as a great teaching
opportunity for students, a way for them to exercise
their faith, stewardship, and outreach. Andrew Heard says,
“We believe in our students! We have seen the work of
God in their lives and know that there is amazing potential
for leadership. We encourage families to talk with their
students about missionally moving to the early hour and
bringing friends, both churched and unchurched, with
them.”
Please take a look at dual hour and see how God is
leading you to help extend his Kingdom to areas previously
uncharted!
The question became how do we make this possible for
our ministry? What was the answer? The girls in our ministry
invited the singles, widows, and widowers from our
PrimeTime Ministry to a party in honor of each of them
to celebrate their birthdays. In my family, birthdays have
always been special times spent with those closest to me.
However, they are also days often only spent with immediate
family. When one does not have any immediate family
nearby, or on this side of Heaven, birthdays can be a lonely
day. Having a day to celebrate the life of each of these
women could meet a need and minister to both young
and old.
Approximately 50 women and 20 teenage girls came
for a time of celebration and fellowship. Each table was
specifically decorated for a different month of the year.
Whenever someone arrived she was escorted by one of
our 7th–12th grade girls to the table that held her birth
month.
The party then began with a dance through the ages
choreographed by one of our interns, Kelley Edwards. Over
10 girls put on the Ritz, tapped, and danced their way
through songs of the 20's, 40's, 50's and 60's. The next
hour was just a beautiful time spent building relationships.
I have heard from both the honorees and the girls who
helped serve how this event was a blessing for them. After
we sang “Happy Birthday” and blew out the candles one
of the ladies remarked that her wish what that we could
do this again next year. I couldn’t have said it better myself,
and that day will forever be in my mind and my heart.
I have been so blessed in my first three months here
and can’t wait to see what God has in store for the Girls’
Ministry here at Park Cities Baptist Church.
