PCBC NEWS
Fall brings new growth
Fall is marked by numerous things: back to school, leaves
turning, and hopefully, cooler weather. This fall, our church
is embarking on a new era in it's history with Dr. Jeff
Warren leading the way as our new senior pastor. Jeff has
a wonderful story to tell about his very "clear" call to Park
Cities. Learn more about this on page 4.
With our continued church-wide emphasis on Acts 1:8, "But
you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you;
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea
and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth," fall is also a
great time to get involved and serve. God gives each of
us specific gifts to use to his glory. If you are unsure what
your spiritual gifts are, go to our website at www.pcbc.org/
ministrydiscovery and take the spiritual gifts inventory. You
will discover ministry opportunities that correlate with your
gifts and find your unique place in ministry.
Whether you volunteer to rock babies on Sunday morning,
teach RA's on Wednesday nights, go on a mission trip or visit
someone in the hospital, you are an Acts 1:8 witness.
How does God want you to be involved? Find your place
to serve as God’s witness here on our campus, in our
community or around the world.
Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve
others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various
forms. - 1 Peter 4:10
God has given us.
A WOMAN’S TOUCH DINNER
NOVEMBER 9, 2010
PCBC.ORG/WOMANSDINNER
Great Hall - $22 per ticket
Table viewing at 5:30 p.m.
Dinner & Program at 7:00 p.m.
As women of faith, we are called to be “salt and light’ in the
midst of all that the world has to offer. How then can our
lives embody more than just the common-modern day expression
of “salt and light” and truly characterize the scriptural
teaching of Jesus?
Join women of all ages and invite a friend or two for a
night of encouragement and fellowship as we listen to women
share testimonies of how Jesus has helped them be “salt
and light” to the world in the course of varying life situations.
A Woman's Touch Dinner, is an annual event showcasing
the talents of our own women as they decorate tablescapes
and present a special program to create an atmosphere of
blessing.
Childcare is available by reservation to Nikki Gribnitz at
214.860.1521. Cost is $5 per child with a $15 family max.
is due the night of the event. Dinner will be provided for children
3 years of age and older. Mothers will need to provide
dinner for children younger than 3 years of age. Children may
be dropped off beginning at 6:30 pm and should be picked
up immediately after the dinner.
Individual tickets are $22 or $220 for a table of ten. Deadline
for registrations is October 31st . You may register on our
JOURNAL • October/November 2010 3
Awith
&
Dr. Jeff
Warren
One recent afternoon, Journal caught Jeff Warren in a rare moment of quiet,
between readying his house in McKinney for sale and picking up Travis from school.
We asked Jeff to share some of his thoughts about coming back to PCBC as senior
pastor and about the process that brought him and his family back to where they
served for 11 years before joining First Baptist McKinney as lead pastor in 1999.
You were on staff at PCBC for 11 years,
and you’ve been away for 11 years.
Now that you’re back, what are some of
the changes you’ve noticed?
Clearly there’s much more of a missional
trajectory; you can see it clearly in the Acts
1:8 Initiative. I’m thrilled with this direction
and the external focus of our people and
resources. Still, I think we have a long way
to go to be the externally focused church
Jesus envisions us to be.
I’m also surprised at how much is the same.
It’s been great to reconnect with so many
people. We love this church family with
whom we’ve served, wept, laughed, and
loved for so long already. It’s also a thrill to
meet so many new people. But I am most
eager to meet those who are not yet part of
the family. That’s where the heart of God is.
When you left, there was only one style
of worship. Now we have five different
worship services every Sunday. Where
do you see this going?
When I came back to visit a few months
ago, I went to worship in the Great Hall. It
was awesome- so full of energy, so many
young people and young families. Another
week I worshipped in the Sanctuary, and it
was exactly as it was in 1999, or even 1959.
I love our traditions and I know that certain
familiar forms of worship resonate with
those of us who’ve grown up in church in
previous generations. Over time, however,
this church family has seen what happens
as the numbers continue to drop in the
Sanctuary. Clearly, there’s a place for the
wonderful hymnody and traditional forms at
Park Cities.
Our question regarding corporate worship
should not be, “What style do you or I like
best?” but rather, “What is the best way to
help connect people with God in worship?”
We have such diversity in this church body,
it’s good to have multiple avenues for
people to worship. We have a wonderful
contemporary expression in the Great Hall
and a traditional or classic expression in
the Sanctuary, and I love the vibrancy and
diversity of the Amigo de Dios service.
But we’ve learned that there’s also a real
need for something in between classic and
contemporary. So we may look at a more
blended style of worship in one or more of
our services. It will be fun to work with the
staff and our worship leaders to develop
some creative ways to do this. I sense the
church family is eager and excited about the
possibilities to reach more people through
some creative solutions.
What can you tell us about your
experience with our pastoral search
process?
I had an initial conversation several months
ago with members of the Pastoral Search
Committee- many of whom I have known
for a long time. I let them know I wasn’t
interested in being a candidate because we
were so happy and so invested in McKinney.
I planned to retire there. But because of my
great love for Park Cities I said I’d be happy
to act as a consultant if I could help in any
way. I remember telling them that they were
looking for someone out there who loves
his church and his community and that they
were about to rip that guy’s heart out. Little
did I know I would end up being that guy!
The Committee had come down to two or
three candidates, and they said I was one
4 PCBC.ORG JOURNAL • October/November 2010 5
of them. Then they told me that, as strong
as those candidates were, I was the only
one that all 12 committee members agreed
upon. That caused me to pause, because I
knew how much those committee members
understand and love Park Cities. I started to
think, “Am I missing something here?”
I was then shocked that I was even
considering it and knew I needed to spend
extended time in prayer and conversation.
Stacy and I have seen how God changes our
hearts as His desires become ours when we
seek Him. Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself
in the LORD and He will give you the desires
of your heart.” Still, God had not changed
my heart; I just wasn’t interested in leaving
First McKinney. After one meeting, a
member of the committee, Scott Robinson,
“We’re in a good place then; if God calls
you to PCBC, it will be miraculous.”
So what happened that you changed
your mind?
Over the summer, Stacy, Emily, and Travis
and I spent about 10 days at Wind River
Ranch in Colorado. Whitney was serving
as a youth intern at FBC Allen and was in
Biloxi, Mississippi, working with people
displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, so
she wasn’t with us.
That week I preached out of Numbers 13
and 14, where Moses sends Joshua and
Caleb and the others to spy on the land of
Canaan. I was telling people that sometimes
God calls you to jump- even if it seems crazy,
even if no one understands or will jump with
you. I realized I was preaching to myself and
God was calling me to jump. I think God just
had to get me away, up on that mountain,
to make His call crystal clear to me because I
didn’t see this coming at all.
What about your family?
Stacy and I talked and prayed about it from
the start and stayed in step on the decision
process. My family has been amazing
through it all. Emily was intrigued by the
possibility from the start. Whitney wondered
initially why God would call me away from
all we had worked toward; why He wouldn’t
let me enjoy the “fruits of my labor” in
McKinney. It was so sweet that she wanted
her dad to see even greater things she had
seen me work so hard to fulfill.
In the beginning I was especially concerned
about Travis. He was getting ready to enter
ninth grade and would have to leave his
closest friends in McKinney. Understandably,
at first he did not want to leave. But then,
while we were at Wind River, he said to me,
“I’ve been praying, Dad, and I think God is
leading us to Park Cities. I know I’m going
to be okay. In fact, I think it’ll be an even
greater adventure than staying where we
are.” I still get emotional when I think about
his courageous faith.
The next day we
talked to Whitney
on the phone. She
was overwhelmed
with emotion as she
told us that God
had revealed to her,
while on the mission
trip, that we were to
go to Park Cities.
God had confirmed
His call with all of
us, individually and
uniquely, to each of
our children.
Because of the
profound clarity of this call on my life and
my family, I am absolutely convinced that
great things are in store for all of us at
PCBC. I know God is all over this and by His
power He will accomplish all that He desires
in us and through us.
Do you have a “vision” for Park Cities?
I clearly have ideas about our direction; but I
know that Jesus has a vision for our church
and it’s written throughout the Scriptures.
We have much work to be done as we
continue what we’ve started with the Acts
1:8 Initiative. I’d like us to become more and
more externally focused, to be the hands
and feet of Jesus in our communities and in
our world- to serve people God puts in our
path. It’s an “incarnational” model rather
than an “attractional” one. The church
should be a movement, not an institution.
Our focus should be less “Come and see”
and more “Go and be.” Success in God’s
eyes is not how well we gather, but how
well we scatter. I want Park Cities people
to be known as a people who are so in love
with Jesus that we serve others, just like
He did. I want the Acts 1:8 Initiative to go
deeper into the hearts of our people, to be
at the cellular level, the DNA of every class,
every ministry, and every person.
I’ve said I don’t want Park Cities to be
the best church in Dallas, but to be the
best church for Dallas. If this church were
somehow removed, would we be missed?
Would anyone (outside our membership)
notice? I think our influence and service
should be so far-reaching that it would be
impossible for the city of Dallas to ignore
what God is doing in us.
Left to Right: Jeff, Travis, Whitney, Stacy & Emily
What will be your priorities at PCBC,
and how do you think you’ll start?
My role is guided by Acts 6:4, to give my
attention to prayer and the ministry of the
Word.
My primary role is to stay close to Jesus, to
walk with Him so the Holy Spirit speaks into
my life. My prayer is that I will be continually
transformed by the Spirit in the presence
of our people. I hope to live so openly and
authentically that I can join Paul who said,
“Follow me as I follow Christ” (1 Cor. 11:1).
I’ll begin my preaching with a series about
our core values. My key role as a pastor will
be to help us define what is core and what
is not. That will give us a matrix for decisionmaking
as we consider what must change
and what stays the same if we are to reach
our full redemptive potential as a church.
We can all be unified around the core,
which is the Gospel. Everything else is open
to change.
My priorities center around walking with
Jesus. My worth and my value is found only
in Christ who defines who I am. And I have
only one message: the message of grace.
For the young and young at heart. Dress up as your
or treat behind the church on Villanova Street. There
will be lots of candy and fun for the entire family.
Following the service, everyone is invited
Childcare is not available.
Trunks needed: We need your vehicle “trunk” to make this
ministry outreach a success. This is a great fellowship opportunity
for Sunday School classes to work together to decorate
one or two cars and then hand out candy from the “trunk”.
Will your class participate?
Candy needed: How much candy does it take to fill the pumpkins
of all those little princesses, spidermen and
supermen? Many, many, many bags! You
can help by donating large bags of
individually wrapped candy. Containers
for candy donations are
located throughout the
church.
