The concerns will be on on low-cost production, productivity enhancement, and quality improvement of Saba, Lakatan, and Latundan. Table 16 presents the S&T interventions for banana that will generate information and technologies to ensure improved productivity and quality banana products. Table 16. S&T interventions for banana: short- and long-term research thrusts. Area R&D Gaps S&T Interventions Preproduction Variety Germplasm resources in field genebanks Development of long-term germplasm are constantly threatened by pests conservation (e.g., tissue culture, and diseases. cryopreservation) is needed. (3–5 years) Development of resistant cultivars to major pests with improved horticultural characteristics through genetic engineering is needed. (10 years) Propagation Further improvement of rapid mass Micropropagation technique needs propagation technologies further improvement.
