To be globally competitive, the fruit
industry has to be transformed into a
dynamic sector. The desirable industry
situation can be achieved by addressing gaps
in R&D. The R&D gaps on fruits cover
specific concerns on preproduction,
production, postharvest system, processing
and utilization, socioeconomics, and
marketing.
Banana
It is the goal of the industry to produce
bananas with high level of acceptable
quality necessary for strategic global
competitiveness. In doing so, it is
imperative to address common problems
besetting the industry. The gaps identified
for R&D include germplasm resources,
micropropagation technique, crop
protection, other aspects of cultural
management, postharvest handling, quality
standard of processed products, and
marketing strategies (Table 12).
Mango
For mango, R&D gaps are on cultivars,
varietal identification, quality planting
materials, technology on high-density
planting, other aspects of cultural
management, indices for readiness to flower,
crop protection, postharvest handling,
processing, and marketing (Table 13).
