This has triggered expansion in areas of production, which is expected to bring about an increase in volume necessary for strategic global competitiveness. These technologies have been further supplemented with indigenous farmers’ practices and other technologies borrowed from other countries. Banana Below are the research accomplishments on banana, which address the major concerns of the industry, namely, production of quality fruits, availability of planting materials, control of insect pests and diseases, and reduction of postharvest losses: • Mass propagation of disease-free planting materials of banana through tissue culture • Eighty banana cultivars characterized and identified through isozyme analysis • Diagnostic kits for indexing BBT and mosaic viruses • Improved production technologies for Lakatan and Saba • Storage and ripening protocol for Lakatan • Reduction of losses through interisland shipment using container van • Rehabilitation of BBTD and bugtokdevastated areas • Improved management system for Saba • New processed products from Saba Mango Improved production management will result into better quality and yield of fruits. The increase in the quality of fruits coupled with market promotion is expected to increase the percentage share of export to the current traditional markets of Hongkong, Japan, Thailand, China, Korea, Australia, USA, and possibly, the European market. Technologies/information generated from the recent programs, which will put mango in a better position in the global market include the following: • Eight superior strains of Carabao: Lamao 1, GES 73, GES 77, GES 84, GES 85, Talaban, Fresco, and MMSU Gold • Control of fruit flies in Guimaras through male annihilation technique (MAT) and sterile insect technique (SIT) • HWT for controlling anthracnose • Modified VHT • Flotation method as means of determining fruit maturity • Established gas levels for CA storage • Flower induction in mango • Improved processed products • Indices for varietal identification in mango • Optimized pruning techniques in mango 20 .............................................................................................................
