Dear Phoenix College Students,<br />

Some of the courses you have registered for may be participating in assessment<br />

outcome measurements. This means that your instructor could submit<br />

one of your assignments to the assessment evaluation team for review. All<br />

information is kept confidential. For more information, please refer to <strong>Out</strong>comes<br />

Assessment, noted under the Maricopa County Community College<br />

District Policies, General Regulations, page 22, in the Phoenix College 2010-<br />

11 Catalog & Handbook. Members of the various assessment committees<br />

are available if you wish to learn more about student outcome assessments.<br />

Our five general education<br />

assessment areas are:<br />

1) Information Literacy Learning<br />

Students will recognize when information<br />

is needed, identify appropriate types of<br />

information, and locate, evaluate, and<br />

use information effectively, ethically, and<br />

legally.<br />

2) Numeracy<br />

Students will use numerical concepts<br />

and data effectively.<br />

3) Critical Thinking<br />

Students will be able to apply critical<br />

thinking skills to solve problems, make<br />

informed decisions, and interpret events.<br />

4) Oral Presentation<br />

Students will plan and deliver an oral<br />

presentation to a target audience<br />

at a satisfactory level.<br />

5) Writing<br />

Students will use writing skills to<br />

communicate effectively.<br />

Other areas of formal<br />

assessment include:<br />

1) Workforce Development Programs<br />

Students in Workforce Development<br />

Programs will be prepared for<br />

employment in their career field and will<br />

exhibit professional behaviors.<br />

2) ESL<br />

Students will construct sentences using<br />

the competencies of levels 1, 2, 3, and 4<br />

grammar. In addition, students will be<br />

able to write a composition in any given<br />

mode that has a title and an introduction<br />

with a main idea. The composition will<br />

also demonstrate support, correct<br />

mechanics, organization and unity, and<br />

simple, compound and complex<br />

sentences.
