The course will involve a sequence of problems dealing with line, gesture, shape, volume, value, texture, perspective, and composition. A variety of media will be explored *Students will be notified by the instructor of any changes in course requirements or policies. Required Text: There is no required text, however I will be giving handouts for required reading. If you’d like a text book, I’d recommend: Drawing A Contemporary Approach, sixth edition by Sale and Betti. Required Materials: 1 Sketch Board 23x 26" approx. (you can buy this later or make it out of MDF) 1 Sketch Pad or Drawing Pad 18 x 24” (feel the paper – whichever you prefer!) 1 Bristol Vellum 18 x 24" 1 Newsprint Pad 18 x 24" 1 24" Ruler 1 Masking Tape 1 Box for storing charcoal 1 Charcoal Pencil Kit 1 Vine Charcoal - get a variety – soft, medium, and hard (You will use often, so buy a few of each) Graphite Pencils: 2 6B 2 3B 2 HB 1 2H

Course Description: <br />

This course will cover fundamental technical and perceptual skills using common drawing media<br />

1 Sketchbook minimum size 5.5” x 8.5”<br />

1 Technical pen set – Faber Castell India ink Artist Pens - 4 pack<br />

1 Sumi ink<br />

3 Bamboo brushes- sizes 2, 6, and 12<br />

3 Plastic containers for ink water (yogurt containers work just fine)<br />

1 folder to keep class assignment sheets, handouts, and notes in<br />

1 Black – usually comes in a two pack<br />

1 White<br />

1 Bistre (brown umber) or Sanguine (reddish sepia)<br />

1 toolbox or container for drawing supplies (canvas or re-­‐useable grocery bags <br />

work great)<br />

This is a list of the materials that you will need for the most immediate projects. I may<br />

require you to purchase additional items as the semester progresses. Come to class<br />

with supplies - do not plan on borrowing from me or other students. Some of the<br />

materials are messy so wear appropriate clothing to class. Remember to show your<br />

student I.D. for discounts!<br />

Required Technologies: <br />

There are no required technologies, however access to a computer and the internet <br />

are helpful in researching terms and viewing examples of drawings/work related to <br />

assignments. <br />

Grading Policy <br />

Your final grade will be based on the following:<br />

2 Portfolio grades, 100 points each 200 points<br />

Critique Participation, 4 points each<br />

A+ 98% - 100%<br />

A 93% - 97 %<br />

A- 90% - 92%<br />

B+ 88% - 89%<br />

B 83% - 87%<br />

B- 80% - 82%<br />

C+ 78% - 79%<br />

D 60% - 69%<br />

E 0% - 59%<br />

EN= Failure due to absences<br />

Attendance Policy:<br />

Attendance is required for the entire class period. Roll will be taken each session at the<br />

beginning of the period. Departures from full attendance such as arriving late, leaving<br />

early, and returning late from breaks will also be recorded throughout the class period.<br />

Important points about Attendance Policy:<br />

1. More than three absences will result in your final semester grade being lowered by a 1/2<br />

of a letter grade, or 5% points. Your grade will be lowered for every absence thereafter. A<br />

partial absence of 1/2 will be given if you arrive late to class or leave class early; two of<br />

these will equal a whole absence.<br />

2. If you come to class unprepared to work on the assignment, you will receive an absence<br />

for that session.<br />

3. Drawing classes demands your full participation; therefore consistent effort during<br />

class is important to your grade.<br />

You are encouraged to get the phone numbers and/or email addresses of several students<br />

in the class so that you can contact them about materials and assignments in the event of<br />

an absence. It is your responsibility to find out what you need to do to make up drawings<br />

that you missed. I award partial credit to drawings that are late or make up work.<br />

The use of cell phones and headphones are not allowed in this class. Turn off your cell phone<br />

during class.
