Late March, 2001, Los
Feliz, CA. My friend
Guy is visiting from Palm
Springs. We’re seated
in my living room. My
mother’s Mexican food
simmering, as we wait for
lunch.
“You’re looking very
healthy these days,
Michael,” Guy says.
‘Well, maybe a little too
healthy. I need to lose at
least twenty pounds. I’ve
never weighed so much!”
“It’s so much better than
before and you can
always lose weight,” he
says, his hand on my
arm.
“It’s very hard with my
mother’s magnificent
cooking and we like our
pastries in the morning.”
“Oh yeah, my Mom’s the
same with her Pan Dulce
(sweet bread).”
”So you were saying you’re planning to move and try living on your
own. I think that’s a great idea. How does your Mom feel about it?”
“My mom supports me in all my decision making. As long as I’m
happy she says. We’ve lived together for five years now and it’s time
for me to explore life on my own as a blind man.”
“It must be both exciting and a little daunting for you. Any ideas on
where you’ll move too?
“I’m thinking maybe Long Beach or Santa Monica near Timothy and
our spiritual family.
“You’re welcome to come and stay with me for a week or two in
Palm Springs,” Guy says in earnest.
“Palm Springs? I’ve never considered that. I’d love to come and visit
you, Guy! I’ll have to find out if there’s a Braille Institute there and
services for HIV Positive clients.”
“I’m going to come back to LA in a couple of weeks. Why don’t you
come back with me then?” Guy asks.
”That sounds great! Is it a Gay friendly place?”
Guy laughs and says, ”Rainbow flags everywhere!”
