ART &
ABOUT
VALLEY OF THE ARTS
WOW,POW,POP,BANG,BOOM and BeAutiful
are what to mind for an “evening under the
Stars”!
The outdoor event was so incredible. Local arts and businesses came
together with silent auction items for the benefit of the AiDS Assistance
Program (AAP), an organization that provides nutritional support for
men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS in the greater Palm
Springs area. The gala entertainment was like a magnificent time
machine pushing us back to the disco days of late 70’s and early 80’s.
The disco divas knocked it out of the park and over the mountain! In
the 70’s, disco music represented a time of change.
Thank you to all the hundreds of volunteers and many sponsors,
including our very own Juli Ragsdale and Levvy Carriker, publishers of
LIVE Magazine. We can bring positive change to the everyday lives of
people living with AIDS/HIV in our “Valley Of The Arts”. BRAVO!
One artist who comes to mind who has pushed himself to another
dimension with his art, is fransisco Vargas. Fransisco is a native
of Chili. He now resides in our desert with his partner Tom, and has
his own gallery. If you love the mountains and more, please visit their
gallery in the Back Street Art District www.woadigital.com Not only
will you be moved by Fransisco’s work, but you will see his progression,
and how he has attained integrity, beauty and colors infused with
energy from earlier works. If you are looking for something to do, the
1st Wednesday of every month is the “Back Street Art Walk” where
you can see many galleries and meet the artists.
Please do not miss this amazing exhibition, “California Dreaming” at
the Palm Springs Art Museum in what has become the epicenter for
“The Valley Of The Arts”. When a world class gallery collects from its
local artists in our golden state of California we all benefit. This is such
an important ingredient to bring life and vitality to the museum. With the
artists, some who are living artists, and create right here, right now!
California Dreaming’: thirty Years of Collecting includes art works
purchased by the Palm Springs Art Museum with funds provided by
the Contemporary Art Council and other contributors since 1984.
The acquisitions were created by contemporary artists who worked
in California or were influenced by spending some time in California
during their artistic careers. The artworks are multi-faceted, including
paintings, works on paper, sculpture, ceramics, and photography.
Remember, the art museum is free on Thursday nights from 4 pm to
8 pm. We love to include the Palm Springs Art Museum as part of our
Thursday night stroll down Palm Canyon for Village fest.
We attended the most intimate, beautiful event at the temple isaiah
for Desert Blind and Handicapped Association (www.desertblind.
org). Entertainers, Dr. John Granet, Keisha D Alessandro, and rob
thomas performed. They all came together with grace and beautiful
music to raise money for an organization who for over 43 years, has
provided transportation, for the blind, stroke, and physically challenged.
If you know of anyone or yourself who may be able to provide a gently
used 4 door sedan please contact us or DBHA. Local celebrities were
in attendance and contributed to a super successful event for DBHA.
Disco Diva’s performing “It’s “It’s Raining Men” tribute to to Sylvester who who
was was taken by by AIDS
Another very notable organization is the Arts institute at Palm
Springs High School. They provide mentorship for young artists by
experienced, established artists here in our “Valley Of The Arts”. The
Arts Institute held their 1st Spring charity sale and auction at Misty’s
Consignments and M. Schwartz Jewelers, attended by many to
support this important venue for our young artists. Our very own Alexis
Hunter donated her amazing creations, “Artistry in Jewelry” to both
events. We here at the lon Michels Gallery are grateful and touched
to live in such a beautiful community who give so much to those in
need, and increases the quality of life for everyone!
Have you heard the phrase, “When God gives you lemons make
lemonade”? Well I had different slant the other day while driving our car
Miss Daisy, our VW convertible bug. A bird pooped on my head! Lon
right away said, “ That is fantastic, great luck!”
It may be lucky, but messy! I ran for the bathroom for a long warm
soapy shower.
