Wandering the art fairs one can find many things.
From paintings to sculptures, from wines to
chocolates – on any given weekend somewhere
the art fairs bring art and craft to the world. Often
one booth catches your eye. It holds an artist that
captures your imagination. Time McClendon is that
artist in that booth.
Time is a sculptor and jewelry designer whose
media are wire and Swarovski crystals. The work
is handcrafted and one of a kind. Without solder
or welding, Time creates his twisted silver metal
objects. The pieces, ranging from delicate rings
and earrings to large dramatic sculptures of women,
animals and musical instruments, stand out in a
world of mass produced items, proudly shouting
“here we are!” If the mind can conceive it, Time can
create it in wire.
The work is time consuming – large pieces can take
six months or more to complete. “One needs to love
what one does. I love what I do. I will research, for
example, palm trees. I will learn all I can to create
the best palm tree I can. If it is three dimensional – I
can do. I am waiting for the client who says ‘Time,
make me a chair.’ That challenge is part of my
journey.”
Time was always doing art. Despite his success,
Time was tired of hearing that his work was “good”
despite having no degree. Partly to silence his
critics, partly to prove to himself that he could do it,
Time went back to school. He earned a degree from
Kansas City Art Institute. His technique, weaving
and wrapping to create three-dimensional paintings,
was refined over time, not by books... Art school
or not, Time has instinctively made the mind-hand
connection.
He creates his work to elicit a response – good
or bad. Time believes there is no bad art – “Art is
about what one likes. The response is the journey’s
end.” According to Time. “God gives each one of us
special gifts. God gave me the gift to create in wire.”
Time sees art as a way of life. “ I hate hearing the
words struggling artist. It makes me sad. Art is a
gift that should be encouraged and nurtured. To
study and to learn; to share and to create – life is a
gift. Art is a way to share life. One should always
strive to be better, to grow, to interact and to share
with others. The relationship of artist and public is
special. I cherish every day and am thankful that I
can create my art. Art has taken me from humble
beginnings to where I am now. I lecture to young
people. My work is seen in galleries around the
country. I have been fortunate to meet many people
because of my art. It was art that brought me my
greatest gift, my wife Linda”, stated Time.
