<strong>Kit</strong> Use and O<strong>the</strong>r Factors Related to Infection<br />

There were 271 cases identified as likely infection (16.3% <strong>of</strong> all births). The highest<br />

unadjusted infection rate was among kit users with untrained attendants (20%), followed<br />

by kit users and non-users with trained attendants (16%, 17%) and <strong>the</strong>n non-users with<br />

untrained attendants (12%). There were 28 newborn deaths (1.7% <strong>of</strong> eligible births), <strong>of</strong><br />

which two were thought to be likely infections. Maternal health was similar between <strong>the</strong><br />

user and non-user groups, with about 85% <strong>of</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>rs healthy at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> interview, 7-<br />

8% ill previously but well at interview, 7-8% ill at <strong>the</strong> interview, and less than 1% very ill<br />

at interview.<br />

A multiple logistic regression analysis was undertaken to estimate relative risks<br />

associated with kit use and o<strong>the</strong>r factors related to infection and to control for <strong>the</strong><br />

confounding factors identified above. Relative risk is <strong>the</strong> increased risk <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> outcome<br />

(e.g., cord infection) over <strong>the</strong> risk associated <strong>the</strong> specified reference action or condition,<br />
