Passional music passional adventures A s a stealth-gender, non-variant woman (meaning “person who identifies as a female in every way, yet is never recognized as such;” hereafter referred to as SGNV), I am somewhat taken with femme-identified queer women (hereafter referred to as the FIQW). Therefore, not taken - enamored. Okay, not enamored - obsessed. For me, FIQW are without a doubt one of the seven wonders of the natural world. As in, they are a wonder, and because themake me wonder about things, too. Like, how do they know what size pantyhose to buy? Or which occasions are fishnet-appropriate? And how on earth do they get their breasts to smell like that? But FIQWs are not just tantalizing, being in their presence is also educational. Having spent a portion of August being the SGNV boi to the queen of the FIQWs, I learned a few things. For example: ~FIQW often match their bras to their underwear (also known, in femme circles, as “panties”) and not just on special occasions either. Me, 6 if I remember both mysocks and shoes on the same day, I think I deserve a nobel prize. a retrospective of 2005 releases femme fantastic The Weeds: The Far Away Flying of Broken Beating- At first listen, this disc falls somewhere between a more sultry and strippeddown Suzanne Vega but melts into a lush and plaintive realm, sort of like Cowboy Junkies. Emily Zeitlyn sings with an amazingly mature and fragile presence. http://www.theweedsmusic.org/ Iggy Pop-A Million in Prizes:The Anthology This two-disc takes you through the broken glass of the 70’s and segue-ways into the more synth-laden and less-cutting Iggy of the Bowie-produced 80’s era while landing somewhat precariously on his more inconsistent and current works (1993 to present). Lot’s here including Iggy’s collaboration with B-52’s singer, Kate Pierson of the B-52s on Candy. The best inclusion might be Skull Ring but I am bummed this retrospective didn’t include my Personal fave Iggy Tune, Bang Bang. Richard Thompson: Front Parlour Ballads - This veteran singer and songwriter/master guitar slinger can twist both notes and lyrics into wry commentary on the state of relationships and a unique form of discontent masked by what are initially pleasantries that suddenly melt away to reveal stinging fire-bursts of raw emotion. Madonna:Confessions on a Dance Floor- A noteworthy new release which includes a collaboration with Andre 3000 & producers Mirwais and Jacques Lu Cont. This is a superb follow-up to her inspiring Live 8 performance this past summer. Everybody…clap your hands! Stevie Wonder: A Time To Love- Fans of old-school Stevie Wonder tunes will love collection of new works that features some brand new funky sounds mixed with melodies reminiscent of soulful summer days back in day... From the absolutely on-time What the Fuss to classic sounding love songs like only Stevie could muster, this whole album kicks it! Look for a booleg of his recent on-air concert on the Howard Stern show. Looking to the future of music: Philly guitar-god, Chris DiPinto, formerly of Wastoid, has started a new band called The Resistance.Expect an even rock–harder metal, but look for it to be die cast in mega-left wing politics and more or less everything you love that makes free speech a fetish worth fighting for. ~Bras come in sizes. This was amazing to me as I had been heretofore wearing whatever was on front of the “2 for $8” rack at Kmart. Which must explain why the support capacity of my bras ranged from “why can’t I breathe” to “this seems more like a tee shirt.” ~Hair dryers can be used for purposes other than thawing frozen pipes. ~Hairspray can be used for purposes other than stain removal. ~You can try on clothes before you buy them. ~Despite their alliterative similarities, a chemise and a camisole are completely different items of clothing. Ditto for skirt and slip and apparently, peignoir and poncho. ~Lastly, chaps are not, in any way, related to chapstick. Kelli Dunham is a Philly-based comic who is NOT a 12 year old boy, although rumor has it that she is negotiating with a certain basic cable channel to play one on TV.
