Burlesque History 101
Although the word, ‘burlesque’ began in ancient times as a verb meaning: ‘to mock or imitate in
a non-serious manner,’ , it was men that ruled the stages with humor and drag. Then in 1869, The
Seven Sisters from the U.K proved that it was actually the scantily clad, all-women cast that
summoned American audiences back time and time again. By 1927, Hinda Wassau brought herself
to “climax” on stage in Chicago while her costume ‘inadvertently vibrates from her body to
the floor during a frenzied hip shake’. Hooray! Burlesque finally became synonomous w/girls
taking off their clothes in creative & elaborate ways!!! From then on in American Burlesque,
women were no longer simply background dancers in a comedy of errors but were
the highlight of the story to be told. More often than not, these extravagant women
represented themselves as female archetypes in culture or fairytale-esque damsels in

distress. Strength meets vulnerability. What a mesmerizing combination for the masses!
