Passional Obituaries Gone but not Forgotten PASSIONAL would like to say goodbye to two very special friends departed in recent months. Amare Solomon, also known as the “Mayor of Baltimore Avenue”, died in the beginning of October of heart failure. Acting as the public face of his wife’s Dahlak Restaurant since their marriage in 1988, Amare was well-loved by most of Philadelphia for his energy, generosity and humanity. Active with local Ethiopian and Ertitrean immigrant community, Amare encouraged other Africans to begin businesses and restaurants in his University City neighborhood. He expanded his own family restaurant from a one room dining facility into a three-room eating area with a bar and a deck (for which he battled L&I for permission to use for outside seating and only recently won). He loaned the space to several community groups and local musicians for benefit concerts, dance parties and other charitable efforts. Dahlak Restaurant opened a second location in Germantown last year (that has been closed since his death). Hundreds of lives touched by Amare joined his family to attend his funeral at St. Francis De Sales church. Family and staff are again serving food at Dahlak on Baltimore Avenue, where Solomon’s spirit lives on-- singing along with the most diverse jukebox in town and the dining upon best food in the universe alongside Dahlak’s many loyal patrons. Shari Lee Goode was a Philly-area writer who died at 37 this past November from breathing complications after struggling with kidney failure. Her fictional piece of prose , The Reluctancy of Brea won a recent contest in the Philadelphia City Paper writers contest of 2005. Shari was an outspoken creative soul who was well-loved by her friends from alumni of the High School for Creative and Performing Arts to members of Philadelphia’s diverse fetish community, where Shari played the role of “Luciouss Sub”.
