Thanks for the piece about horses by
Ms. D’Arcy! I am a huge fan of D’Arcy as
a model and as a Pro Domme and I
didn’t even know that she was an
equestrienne! I would be her pony any
day! — Pony Boy, San Francisco
Dear Pony,
As with most publications, what was
published was an edited version. I
am e-mailing the un-cut version to
you. I’m sure you will enjoy it!
Damn. I thought I was going to get sexier
pictures than I got this month. I know
that the magazine isn’t expensive or
anything, but I was expecting a little
more PASSION on your pages. Even your
picture of the Dominatrix had her
wearing a T-Shirt on a horse. What a
letdown! You should have a page three
model in a bikini or something a little
more revealing that what you offered
for September. I’m not gay, but I would
rather look at a man in a bikini on
page 3 than a book full of covered up
bodies, most of which don’t qualify as
model material. — Deprived, Philly
Dear Deprived,
Thanks for your brutally honest
feedback. Such is the nature of a
magazine available to all ages in
malls, coffee shops, and soon in
newsboxes all around Philadelphia.
We are making a conscious effort to cultivate the idea that
beauty is not only skin deep and skinny. We believe that
beauty radiates from within, and such radiance can be
captured on film in the spectrum of body type. Many of
our models are recruited from the PASSIONAL sales floor.
When people try on clothes and they fit well (hence
stimulating their passional hearts), we invite them to pose
for pictures, regardless of their age, build, gender or race, as
passion and fashion are for everyone. (Note: All models are
at least 18 years old). If you want, send us a pic in your
PASSIONAL attire. We’ll be happy to let our readers critique
your fashion sense and physique.
What is going on with the Diabolique
Ball this year? Are you still doing it?
When do tickets go on sale? The
Diabolique website doesn’t have much
information on it. — Latex Rob, Texas.
Dear Latex Rob,
See the back cover of this month’s
issue for more info about this year’s
Dark Faerie Tale themed Diabolique
Ball 8. Tickets are on sale at
PASSIONAL and will soon be
available online at
www.diaboliqueball.org. We have
started a non-profit foundation to
coordinate and oversee the finances
of the Ball as it has grown by leaps
and bounds and I am very busy. But
I am still on the Board and
PASSIONAL sponsors the Ball. Next
month, there will be many
Diabolique Ball stories on the pages
of the magazine! Start shopping for
costumes now!
Do you REALLY sell vibrators for each
astrological sign? I mean, the
astrology column is cool, but the vibe
thing has gotta be a joke! You don’t
have them on the PASSIONAL website.
— Jen, New York
Dear Jen,
Yes, the Astro-vibes are a real line of
12 imported German vibrators we
sell at the PASSIONAL boutique as part of our silicone toy
collection. Our entire retail website is being reorganized
and will hopefully be up and at full power within a few
weeks. These silicone Astrovibes will not be online until
after Halloweeen most likely. In the meantime, if you would
like to order an Astro-vibe for the co-star of your life, you
can call us at 877-U-CORSET any day between noon-10PM
Eastern and we will send one off to you for just $55 postpaid.
Remember that it may take up to 2 weeks if we are out of
stock on a certain sign, but we try to keep extra stock of the
“vibe of the month” (See page 18 for this month’s featured
Libra vibe).
We appreciate all feedback, so send us yours today! We’ll send you a FREE copy of the issue containing your letter
(of course, you have to give us your snail mail address!)
mOCAP vIRTUAL bOXING
I was never was a fan of boxing as a child, it seemed way too
brutal. That was, of course, before I got in touch with my inner
rage as a teen, inspiring me to pursue writing, acting, music,
activism, and exercise. At this stage in my life, however, I have no
time for many of these outlets. While I love my work, there are
times when I need instantaneous release
from the daily stresses of life. Virtual boxing
provides that for me better than any
therapist or drug can.
I first discovered virtual boxing about 5 years
ago watching an 8 year old boy go toe-to toe
with an imaginary opponent. He dodged
punches, threw his gloves in the air, and sweat
and grunted just like a pro with a look to kill on
his face — a scary sight to behold. While watching,
I recalled several real-life schoolyard incidents
I suffered through as a child that would have been
less painfully resolved if fought against an imaginary
opponent had one existed at the time. For the
next two years, I searched for easily accessable machines.
To my delight, I found two of them at the
Philadelphia Dave & Busters, where I brought my fantasy
of virtual boxing to life.
When friends disappoint me, people get on my
nerves, or life gets too stressful, I find release in blackening
the eyes of my opponents. I reach peaks when
I get to “rush” a guy with 10-50 punches and watch
his body flail around with each strike. In the
past three years, I have truly become a
contender, boxing at D&B and also
at other arenas, a.k.a. arcades, in
the Philadelphia area. I regularly
wow audiences of little kids by
banging through my opponents.
I still get a rush from watching other boxers in the virtual ring.
Plus, this is how I pick up tips on how the machine works and
on how to play to win, some of which I will now share with you.
You keep playing as long as you knock out your opponents.
An on-screen “punching meter” indicates where and when to
punch. Only strike when the target marks appear, otherwise
you get tired fast and lose points. With each win, you face tougher
and tougher opponents.
Before you begin, plant your feet firmly on the footprints in
front of the machine. Slide on each two-pound glove. Then
deposit your money and get ready for the roar of the crowd,
and a blow by blow narrative preparing you
for battle.
The first opponent is a slow
fighter that’s pretty easy to dodge. If
you dodge him enough times, you
can knock him out with one punch!
The second fighter, Marv Tyler, sometimes
knocks me down, although I
can usually get past him without getting
knocked out. Getting “KO’d”
causes the screen to go blurry,
prompts the announcer to shout,
“player is down,” and makes the
referee’s face get big and your count
to begin, “1, 2, 3, etc.” You can only get
knocked down three times before you
have to either pay for a new game or
pay to continue your current game.
The third opponent, the russian
Igor Draganov, in my experience is the
toughest to beat, even if the game is in
perfect working order. I have come across
many games where the movements of only
one hand registered, basically forcing me to fight
against these big goofy guys with one arm tied
behind my back. I jab with my right and throw
my stellar left hook by swapping the one glove
that works between my hands. Talk about great handeye
coordination!
The next contender, Gonzales (from Puerto Rico), is a little
easier to knock down. I have yet to KO the fifth one, Rick somebody
from Pennsylvania Please, I am yet to even knock him
down three times! But then again, I never pay to continue the
game. I prefer to start over with the easier players than flail my
tired arms against the tough guys. — KLM
As the bewitching hour approaches, local MINI Cooper enthusiast
and proud PhillyMINI member’s Tiffanna and hubby
Peter plot and plan a motoring event sure to thrill the soul for all
those in the tri state area. Group members from PhillyMINI as
well as members from other MINI Cooper groups within the
DC metro Area and NY City will join us as we motor
into the night to enjoy “A MINI Haunting.”
Planning for this event has taken a year’s time for
the couple while racking up a little over 2,500 miles.
The group ventures into central and northern Jersey
in search of NJ’s creepiest locations. The state is full of
some of the oddest curiosities, insane occurrences, and
hold’s majestic beauty. While this motoring event will
be a full day of fun and excitement we will venture to
such places as old Historical Cemeteries, Stop and
share Ghost Story’s, Visit a Haunted House and tear up
the roads on our ever favorite twistie’s. These are simply
a few things that compliment this exciting annual
event.
This Halloween Event is planned for October 23rd,
2004 and will bring delight to those participating in
this Spooktacular jaunt. We will venture through small
towns where the dark side lives. Traveling down
Shades of Death Rd. to Ghost Lake is by far the best
route of the event. The lake holds the spirits of an
Indian burial ground. They say the mist that rises from
this lake is the souls of those Indians. As you watch
this eerie specter rise from this body of water it sends
shivers through your soul. These back roads hold mystery
and stories sure to send shivers down the stoutest
spine. Small talk in lake side pub brought us the story
of how an evil twin pushed his brother thru the ice as
his parents watched in horror. In yet another small town pub
we heard the story of how a little hermit lady hunted hunters.
These are just a few of the exciting stories to be told and shared
along this macabre adventure through the dark back roads of
New Jersey.
A MINI Haunting
MINI Coopers are the life’s blood of these groups and the
great people they bring together for adventure and fun. Not to
mention the economical factor of these great cars, they get fantastic
gas mileage and you actually can custom order your prized
possession to your exact specs. Which is exactly what the couple
did with both of their MINI Coopers.
PhillyMINI is still looking for sponsors to help with our events
either monetarily or with providing product for raffles to help
raise money for this young and spry group. If you’re interested
in sponsorship we’d love to hear from you. Simply write our
organization at sponsorship@phillymini.org.
Angels and Ghosts:
Facets of Female
Where: Aphrodite Gallery, 704 South 5th Street
When: Sundays through October
Opening reception: Friday, October 8, 7-9pm
“Angels and Ghosts” will be recent works of Kerisa West
including small paintings and prints. Each represents a facet
of what it is to be female. Sexual, delicate, and powerful, they
also focus on more specific roles such as the muse, the siren,
the angel, the lost soul, the devil, and the animal.
Her painting builds upon thickly textured backgrounds,
seeking out the curves and figures of goddesses, animal spirits,
angels and sirens. Represented in mixed media consisting
mainly of acrylic latex, charcoal and one or two unique mediums
per painting, she uses a variety of techniques to help her
to communicate in not only an aesthetically pleasing manner,
but also on a deeper symbolic level.
West, an emerging artist living in Philadelphia, was born in
England and spent her childhood in Japan, Israel, and several
locations across America. Her work is based on both emotional
reactions to travel, and the rich visual and storytelling
traditions of the places she has lived.
Apples have, and will, continue to defeat human willpowerturning
“no” into “yes” and “I won’t” into “I will.” Here’s an innocent
example from when I was in elementary school.
At a classmates’ Halloween party, I decided to participate in
the apple bobbing competition. The apples taunted me from
the pool of greasy water created by
a recipe of spit and clown makeup
that served to make the game more
challenging. I really wanted to get
the apple so I could win the much
desired plastic prize that was promised
to the winner. But no matter
how hard I tried, the apples remained
at the bottom of the bin —
bright, proud, and red. Damn those
apples! I turned cranky and miserable
for the rest of the evening, in
the way only a seven year old little
girl could.
Apparently, I wasn’t the only one
who was seduced by the apple. In
the familiar story of Eve, why was
the apple chosen as forbidden? A
seedy fig, phallic banana, or fleshy
peach would seem to make more
sense. Some attribute the apple’s
earliest reputation as temptress to
the Roman Celtic war. The Romans
identified the apple, also an important
part of Celtic culture, as a
medium for manipulation and seduction.
Some point to the fact that
when cut in a half, it forms a “burning”
sign of the devil, with the seeds
being in the shape of the sign of Satan
and the “burning” caused by
oxidation. But no matter when these
folk tales were told, the bright red
juicy apple’s lustful reputation stood
the test of time.
Apples still rightfully hold their
lustful, bad-girl status. The story of
Snow White made the “good” little
girls think that apples will hurt
them, while the “bad” little girls
would make out with boys following
consumption. While apples
have also been disguised as neutral
and as bland as frozen apple pie
the mystique of Apples
No Surrender
Apple Crisp
3 lbs. apples
at least half should be Macintosh variety
1 stick butter plus extra for greasing pan
1 ¼ cup rolled oats
¾ cup flour
1 cup brown sugar
¼ cup brandy
½ t cardamon
1 t cinnamon
¼ t nutmeg
¼ t ginger
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease a 8x8
inch, 9x9 inch, or loaf pan with butter or cooking
spray.
Peel and core apples. Cut into chunk size piecesas
chunky as you like it. Put into mixing bowl and
stir in brandy, cinnamon, nutmeg and ginger. Mix
well until all apples are well coated. Set aside.
Cut butter stick into 6 pieces. In another mixing
bowl combine butter, oats, flour, brown sugar,
and butter. With CLEAN hands, combine well-mixture
should be crumbly but butter should be well
distributed.
Add apples to greased pan. Pour in ½ the “juice”
left at the bottom of the mixing bowl evenly
through the mixture. Pack until the dish is 2/3
full. Top with crumble mixture, pushing firmly.
Shallow dish: Bake for 30-35 minutes; Deep dish:
45-50 minutes or until the top is brown. Since
ovens vary, keep your eye on it to prevent burning.
Allow to cool until it reaches a “warm” temperature.
Tastes great with vanilla ice cream.
l o v e b i t e s
thawed out for Thanksgiving, the film American Pie revived its
image as the sexy “feels like” aphrodisiac when Jason Bigg’s
character attempted experiential sex with his Mom’s freshly
baked apple pie.
For me, my relationship with apples blossomed when I started
hacking them up with a knife at a young age. Apples were one
of my first experimental ingredients,
as they grow abundantly near my
home in Bucks County and my mother
would bring home huge quantities of
them from the orchards. We had to
figure out what to do with them before
nature and rotting took their
course. I quickly learned about the
menage-a-trois of cinnamon, nutmeg,
and apples, and became addicted to
the trio blanketing pancakes, tossed
in stuffing, or covered in sugary
crumble. Nutmeg and cinnamon each
hold their own as aphrodisiacs, their
intense flavors helping create “heat”
through the body and fuel the brain’s
pleasure centers.
When I was dating, I often treated
my then boyfriend to a homemade
apple crumble, thinking it’d help them
fall in love with me. Combining my
secret no-surrender blend of cardamon
and ginger with an extra dose of
cinnamon would do the trick — at
least for the night. After dating for a
while, the tides turned and now I was
being offered homemade apple
crumble by a date. Here my crumble
had gained quite a reputation. It had
become code for “I want to sleep with
you.” I was both insulted and excited.
Someone had usurped my medium
of seduction. Out of all the fruits in
the world, couldn’t he pick another
crumble?
Apples still remain a favorite aphrodisiac.
Not because they actually
stimulate a reaction in the body, but
because of their bad-girl, seductive associations
HALLOSCENES
By Grant Antrews
A few tricks and treats you may not have considered: ‘Tis the season for ghosts
and goblins, hordes of trick-or-treaters, and… imaginative dressing up! No other
season allows us the easy acceptance, let alone the wide variety of accessible
costume bits, that Halloween offers. Ready for something new and exciting, a
little naughty, a lot of fun? Try these ideas.
She makes her man wear (her?) panties and pantyhose under his business suit.
He makes her wear Y-fronts and a man’s ribbed cotton undershirt under her
business suit… and no bra! Young women did without them for a decade or so
in the late 60s and early 70s; today’s crossdresser can go without her brassiere for
a day!
Instead of a mask, she takes him to a party wearing a pair of her black satin
panties over his head. “He’s being an ass!” she replies, whenever anyone asks.
She puts her submissive fella into a firm control panty girdle for the holiday. If
it has a split crotch, she collars his family jewels and attaches a leash through the
fly of his trousers. Then she takes him for a walk, right out there on the streets
crowded with trick-or treaters!
Apple cider is a sweet seasonal treat, but it can cause after-effects! After a couple of large glasses of nature’s harvest, she puts him
into plastic “training pants” (incontinence pants) and takes him for a walk. He will, of course, strive desperately to avoid embarrassing
himself. Country folks refer to this as “the apple cider two-step.” Depends or diapers are optional. Obedience is not!
Dunking for apples can be more fun if she times him, with the promise of one stinging swat across his bare bottom for every
second it takes him to catch an elusive apple in his teeth.
I once knew a beautiful young woman who “went as a man” on Halloween. In her BVDs, she carried a sausage and a sack, actually
the toe of a stocking, with two ripe plums sewn inside. Her
guy checked her often, to ensure that the plums were not
squeezed or bruised. Late in the evening, he produced a
much larger, longer sausage… and she had an obvious erection
the rest of the evening! Her blushes were exquisite.
The submissive male offers untold opportunities. Only
on this night, Mistress can dress him as a woman, head to
toe, with outrageous makeup and a wig, bra and panties,
stockings and a skirt, high heels, and send him to the door
to meet the trick or treaters. He’ll be the talk of the neighborhood,
and everyone will say he was a good sport. Of
course, if he doesn’t satisfy Mistress, she can put him over
her knee with skirts up and panties down, and spank him
till he learns his lesson. They don’t call it “mischief night” for
no reason!
star to learn how to use the Vampire Mystique to seduce
and consume your lover. Lady Chandra (ladychandra.com), a
member of the living vampyre community, will touch on the
This exciting, intensive, four part progressive hands-on series
Progressive RESTRAINT workshop sERIES
Saturda
day, October 2: Basic Bondage — Rope is one on the
most creative, versatile and useful SM tools. But for many novices,
rope can be intimidating. How do I begin? What kind of
rope should I use? What is a safe tie? How do I use rope
effectively? Veronica will teach you that rope bondage can be
made simple, safe and fun! Students will learn two basic tying
techniques that can be applied to countless bondage positions.
This class is guaranteed to leave you amazed with your own
abilities.
Saturda
day, October 9: Intermediate Bondage e — We’ll build
on the skills learned in Basic Bondage to create more complex,
intricate and decorative ties. Students will also learn to incorporate
bamboo rods to their “bondage structures” as well as learn
to effectively tie to frames and furniture.
Saturda
day, October 16: Bondage Applications — Can you
make your lover shudder with delight or your kidnapping “victim”
shudder with fear, just by how you wield your rope? Bondage
isn’t merely about the ability to tie the rope; it’s about the ability
to effectively apply the rope to suit your needs. In this class,
students will learn to set the tone and enhance the mood of a
scene by how they use the rope. We’ll explore rope as a tool for
eroticism, power, force, control and playfulness.
Saturda
day, October 23: Advanced Bondage Tec
echniques —
Problem solving and making modifications to adjust to the needs
of your bondage partner are essential for mastering rope. In
this class, students will face these challenges as they begin to
learn and work with the special tying techniques necessary to
achieve successful partial and full suspensions. With individual
supervision, each student will accomplish one partial suspension
during the course of this class.
the perfect alibi
by Devil Dawg
OK. It’s late October, and you know what that means (beyond Christmas music in the malls). It means pumpkin innards on the
kitchen table. It means “fun sized” candy bars that are about as fun as they ‘re satisfying. It means if you dare drop an apple in some
kid’s trick or treat bag, your trees and windows will pay the price.
It means potential fun for you as well. It’s time to dress up in your fantasy duds, the way you really might wish to in public, with
two solid weekends worth of “get out of jail free”
cards. All courtesy of the feast of All Saints’. Ironic
isn’t it?
So what if dancing around a bonfire isn’t your
idea of druid joy. If you’ve been blessed with, or
worked hard for, a hottie body, this bevy of fall
events is when you can show it off, without people
sayin, you’re a show off. So do it, damn it. Dressing
in your sexiest most revealing and kinky clothes
may be the way to go. My thinking is that the best
way to celebrate All Saints’ Day is being a world
class sinner!
As a man who grew a moustache just so I could
shave half of it off to be a hermaphrodite for Halloween,
there isn’t much Halloween behavior I won’t
advocate. Perhaps the executioner is the way to go.
A face mask and shackles, leather pants, and kick
ass boots might be a look. A dungeon master outfit (one should attend every party) will get you a few requests for spankings.
If you’ve been reluctant about making the mainstream debut of your kilt, this is the perfect time of year to do so. When wearing
his, my friend Dennis never fails to get mulitple, “what ya got on underneath”
inquiries. He has a host of ways of the getting to the bottom of that question,
and the ever popular, “funny you don’t look Scottish.”
No Halloween party would be complete without a slave/ harem girl and
dominatrix. No matter what, be sure to let yourself go. After all, it’s not your
perverse desires. It’s a Halloween party. It’s not your fault, the caramel corn
made you do it.
And let’s be real. If you saw somebody at your neighborhood Halloween
party dressed up as a kinkster, wouldn’t you make a beeline for them the
moment you could shake off the people who were bragging bout their JennAir
range or SubZero freezer?
So this Halloween, you have to represent. Look bumpin’ and recruit all the
budding spankers and spankees, rope boys and girls to attend the next Diabolique
Ball (see back page). Feel free to roam the streets and attend parties
in full regalia free from recrimination. It’s your duty to give those tentative
freaks the gentle nudge they need down the slippery slope of perversion.
So be cool, and let them know this ain’t your costume, it’s your weekend play
clothes. And I call dibbs on the mini snickers bars and bags of peanut M&M’s.
Hold the caramel corn, though. I really believe that’s how they dispose of
industrial waste.
Above: Sister Axe grows her garden with chocolate eyeballs and a fabulous
habit and collar from Polymorphe that flawlessly combine with a high-collared
latex dress and latex stockings to challenge your taboos this Halloween.
Right: Stylin and profilin and beguilin in this mournfully sexy leather corset
shirt. Bad puppy wears leather muzzle with blindfold by Gaelyn, locking leather
Ren vest by Fetish Temple, bondage pants by Northbound and army boots.
ARIES (Mar 21 - Apr 19) Oy!
Get over yourself already. You are
at odds and feel misplaced and
you do not understand why. The
answer is simple, your polar opposite,
Libra, is ruling the heavens.
Relax, you’ll be fine and in six
months it will be your time to roar
once again. If you are feeling sad and lonely, go snuggle up with
a Leo, you are made for each other.
TAUR
URUS
US (Apr 20 - May 20) Use your stubborn streak to
accomplish things this month and stay out of debates. You will
lose! Normally one of the beautiful people, you are not used to
not getting attention. It’s okay, by November, you will be front
and center once more.
GEMINI (May 21 - June 20) Nothing ventured nothing
gained. It is a great time to enroll in colleges courses that start in
January. Stick to the humanities, science is not your shtick. You
are in desperate need of something new. Go shopping.
CANCER (June 21 - July 22) Be careful when chopping
wood for your autumn and winter fires, you are vulnerable to
injuries in October. It is also time for your annual physical.
Something has been eating away at you, but it is minor and it will
pass.
LEO (July 23 - Aug 22) “Take a walk on the wild side” is not
advice you normally need. Buy an absolutely outrageous Halloween
costume and have a blast. Consider changing your hair
color since the summer sun altered it considerably. Your hair is
your “mane” asset.
VIRGO (Aug 23 - Sept 22) You should run for politics. Honest,
forthright, hardworking, diligent….need I say more…..is just
what this country needs. While you may not be running in this
election, consider it for next year and by all means, work the
polls this November.
LIBRA (Sept 23 - Oct 22) Such a sweet-natured sign, let your
hair down. Tie one on for your birthday. Many people love you
and want to celebrate with you. You subdued nature sometimes
sends them a mixed message, however. Knock it off and let us
worship you.
SCORPIO (Oct 23 - Nov 21) Life is good for you, especially
on October 28th. Get back to basics is good advice, but do not
take any breaks from your main love, art. You are extraordinarily
artistic. Redo your bedroom…..better yet, redo someone
else’s.
SAGITT
GITTARIUS
LIBRA FOCUS
Libra, Happy Birthday and get ready for a fun time.
You have been patient as of late, but your patience
and ability to love unconditionally will pay off this
month, albeit not likely till the end of October. You
are toying with many changes and attitudes lately,
and no one does that better than you. You are eventempered
through the most heated debates and
schisms and can find good in someone when no
one else can. You have felt a certain loneliness as
of late, but that will all change by October 28th with
the lunar eclipse, the last of its kind until 2007. The
lunar eclipse is often misunderstood
as a death of something, but whenever
there is a death, it only opens
the door for a new birth. You are in
love, now just open the door so that
special person knows they can enter,
then let nature take its course.
Libra Vibe. A perfect balance. Libra’s are
known for their debating skills, but both
sides of the scales will agree that this beautifully
smooth silicone vibrator from
Germany will bring justice to your piece.
Whether you choose to rub it in the front,
or plunge it into the back you can vibe
with the cosmos visit the stars!
December. A little self-indulgent, the summer picnics are a thing
of the past, concentrate on self-improvement.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 - Jan 19) You are at odds in business
in early October, a truly freaky occurrence, but it will resolve by
October 10th, I promise. Not the most romantic of signs, you
forgot how to respond to flirtations. Flirt right back. You can be
the most passionate lover if you allow it. Make reservations for
dinner for two in late October, and I want details afterwards.
AQUARIUS
ARIUS (Jan 20 - Feb 18) Go as your favorite politician
to the Halloween Party. Did you know that the two most common
signs for past presidents are Aquarius and Capricorn? It
makes sense too, the humanitarian and the businessman do well
in public life. It is a low-key autumn for you. May I suggest a
good novel?
PISCES (Feb 19 - March 20) Quiet frolicking is your lot in
life for the next few weeks. A former lover tries to reconnect,
but you are very leery. Good, you should be! Make them prove
they are worth another try. You are too generous and kind for
your own good at times. Take long walks in the early evening
and ponder the universe. Look to the southern skies for a brilliant
display.
Dizzy Rascal
Sometimes Hip-Hop is just a formula. Sometimes it can
change your mind and your entire life or be your only lifeline.
And sometimes, someone comes along who pulls the unspoken
out of the universe in a way only an artist with clarity of
vision, a calling, and a huge can of whoop-ass is able to do.
Dizzy Rascal is, hands down, the most compelling and forward
thinking new artist in Hip-Hop. He cuts em’ all, making
every MC look like a sucka’ with no clue. A mere 19 years old,
this Brit is a talent the size of 10,000 skyscrapers. His “shake
you up and then smooth you out” form of storytelling, which at
first listen can be almost alarming when you hear this kid rev it
up, surprisingly moves you to exactly where he’s coming from.
Rascal reigns supreme with strangely cut beats and a mega
off-kilter delivery that is angry, pleading, defiant and even poetic.
Rascal claims diverse musical influences ranging from Rn’B,
UK Garage, Sepultura, Sham 69, American Hip-Hop, and English-Drum
n’ Bass, resulting in a sound far more mature than
his genre seems these days. The heavy question: how long it
will be until this UK mastermind catches on here in the states!
Los Dias De Los Muertes
As with many things in our shared culture, the common theme of Halloween
tends to come from a point of view that was held in some way by those of European
lineage. But for some of us, the coming of All Hallows Eve brings with it a
more esoteric train of thought.
Being part Mexican, Halloween brings me to thoughts of those no longer able to
walk beside us in their mortal forms, yet who are always in our minds in one way
or another. El Dia De Los Muertes, or Days of the Dead, is a chance for us to
celebrate the one day of the year when those spirits will be with us again. Foods
such as pan de muerte, or bread of the dead, are offered to give the spirits sustenance,
and flowers are offered to help guide their way back to us. Altars are
sometimes made at a family’s house, with these offerings placed upon them so that
the spirits of loved ones may soon be nearby. Sometimes, incense is also burned. If
you are ever in Mexico at this blessed time, you will be treated to sights and sounds
that will stay with you the rest of your life. Walking from one’s home to the
cemetery, you will see hundreds and hundreds of marigolds and all manners of
skeletons and other macabre toys ranging from intricate paper cutouts to elaborate
wreaths and crosses decorated with paper or silk flowers.
Unlike most cultures that seem to hold the dead in some semblance of revulsion,
with spirits being evil and skeletons a sign of a tortuous death, Mexicans seem to
embrace the dead, even to the point of making the human skeleton a large part of
indigenous art. Most importantly, this commemoration is a way to make the
unfamiliar become familiar, and for families to pass down the traditions and ancestry
of not only their own lineage, but of their culture. This tradition is part of the
ancient Mexican belief that life is not just about living, but also about death. This
way of thinking lends itself to the most enduring of lifetime love affairs — the
otherwise inexplicable lack of the fear of death. Most Mexicans embrace death,
taunt it’s proximity, and flirt with it. Life, she was a potential wife.
And while these traditions would seem to fall by the wayside, due in part to modernization and the inevitable Americanization of
Mexico, many Mexican people are holding
onto these pre-Christian traditions all
the more tenaciously. It would seem that,
as always, the conquerors of Mexico never
truly defeat the people of this spiritual
land, but instead, become woven into the
fabric of it. The traditions have even become
something of a tourist attraction
for a society like ours that tries to stave
off illness and quiet the call of death until
the very last moment.
Los Dias De Los Muertes are celebrated
November 1 and 2. Traditionally, the 1st
is dedicated to those who suffered an untimely
death, namely children, and the 2nd
is reserved for adults.
halloween on south st
Never missing an opportunity to put its own spin on observing
important traditional holidays, the South Street Headhouse
District is planning a very special line-up of activities for everyone
in the family on Halloween
for “Day of the Dead!”
The elaborate day long celebration
starts at 3pm with the
traditional Mexican South Street
Parade. Featuring spectacular giant
puppets, dancing skeletons,
dancing bears, traditional altars,
fire spinners and more.
This year’s event honors surrealist
Salvadore Dali. His corpse
will be delivered in a horse drawn
hearse and will be part of the parade.
At Headhouse Square, his
spirit will be raised to perform the Dance of Death.
Starting at 3:30pm, music will fill Headhouse Square (2nd
and South) well into the evening. At 6pm, the top area Grateful
Dead cover band, Splintered Sunlight, will begin a 3 hour concert.
In addition, area merchants will do up their shops, with
many offering costumed revelers discounts and freebies all day.
Everyone is invited to South Street in costume. Come by after
the Eagles win. Your greens are considered a costume!
inexpensive foundation, and acrylic
paints, I Munched my way to the
2003 Beaux Arts Ball, then to a
of the morning. The acrylic
paints kept me bright and touch-up free, letting
me enjoy the evening without worry. By applying
the foundation over the cap and on all skin to be
painted, the acrylics did not stain my skin and were
easily removed with a little cold cream.
Hallo-what?
by Kelli Dunham
Like most folks who grew up “born again” (i.e. in a evangelical Christian family that
substitutes prayer for Prozac), I started out with a very skewed view of Halloween.
This was a holiday, as my mom explained it, that was Satanic with a capital “S.”
“All the freaks and perverts come out to play at Halloween,” my mom was fond
of saying. And she said it like-get this-the freaks and perverts coming out to
play was a bad thing.
Unlike some born again families, my mom allowed us to dress up, but
the costumes had to pass the WWJW (What Would Jesus Wear) test.
Obviously we couldn’t be a ghost, Freddy Krueger, or, God forbid, a
witch. But we also couldn’t dress us like an owl, bat or frog because
these animals represented certain varieties of demons. Yeah, tell that
to the people at the Sierra Club, or worse yet, PETA.
So our inevitable default was a character from the Bible, although
it was difficult to create a costume for John the Apostle that really looked
much different from, say, Zacheus the Tax Collector. The coolest born again
mom dressed her son like up like King David and even made him a faux severedhead-of-giant
prop which he carried proudly through the neighborhood, leaving a
trail of dripping ketchup behind him. The rest of settled for the same bathrobe from
year to year, taping on an index card with the hand lettered notation “The Apostle Paul”
or “Mary Magdelene,” like an ancient version of the “Hello, I Am…” lapel label.
As time had passed, however, my mom has mellowed. In fact, last year when she
came to visit Philly, my sister took her on a day trip and they ended up on Christopher
Street. In the West Village. At 9 PM. Yup, on Halloween.
My sister took my (now 70) mom’s hand and led her through the crowds of
outrageous drag divas, fetish performance artists, and thousands of other beautiful
freaks and perverts. My mom only smiled.
Her only comment came when she pointed to a very tall drag queen and
observed “my, it must take her forever to wax.”
Some people believe in Christmas miracles, but after that night, I am convinced
that nothing can compare with the marvels of Halloween.
