Corsets
Fashion And Function
Everything’s coming up corsets this spring. The stars are
wearing corsets in movies, music videos and televised awards
shows. Professionals are wearing corsets to work with their jackets
and slacks. Brides are wearing them down the aisles and beyond
to their honeymoons. High-school seniors are wearing them with
long skirts to their proms. Hedonists are wearing them with little
else in the bedroom. Everybody who’s anybody is wearing corsets.
Fashion runways, music videos (from country to hip-hop to soul),
red carpets and nightclubs have continuously been filled with
public displays of corset-inspired fashions for the past ten years.
While department stores are celebrating the cross-laced
aesthetic, shopping for a corset is still very much like walking
through a house of mirrors. Although there are plenty of cute tops
with decorative lacing in womenswear as well as dozens of bustier
styles in the lingerie departments, actual corset sightings are few
and far between. Even after a decade of corsetmania, there are
very few stores that actually sell the real deal, which has forced
many people to rely on mail-order to obtain these quality fashion
items. But why would people invest in a single garment with a
starting price of $150, especially when they often cannot fit for the
garment in person?
In the world of corsetry, you definitely get what you pay for.
A genuine, waist-reducing corset requires hours of labor, yards
of fabric and a variety of hard to find small items to manufacture.
But while the average person might appreciate the detailed
craftsmanship of a corset, it’s the quest for the almighty hourglass
that fuels the addiction. A corset provides lower lumbar support
that is certainly more fashionable than weight-lifting belt, but the
instantaneous 1-3” reduction in the waistline cinches the deal! So
while $50 pieces from Vicky’s are fashionable fun, they simply
don’t have the same body-sculpting magical effect of even a basic
$200 corset. With body-flattering fabrics and forms, modern fashion
corsets are not made to be hidden beneath layers of clothing like
their Victorian predecessors. Modern corsetry expresses many
moods from sophisticated dressy brocades to playful pastels to
downright wicked leather styles. Whichever mood strikes you can
be blended into different looks for different occasions. Popular
corset styles are often made to be worn as a body-shaping feminine
top or as a more unisex belt-style over clothes. Worn with a suit
and jacket, a corset is business attire. With a long skirt, a corset
becomes formalwear. Coupled with jeans or a mini, that same
corset is clubwear.
In addition to versatility for various occasions, a single corset
can provide a sexy smorgasbord of experiences. A head-turning
night out dressed to the nines can be followed by an intimate “lights
on” evening of fantasy and romance. By simply removing slacks or
a skirt and attaching a few garter suspenders, any corseted “look”
can instantly transform into “pinup model” for private, after-hours
entertainment!* *
What is it about the corset
that makes it so fascinating
to everybody from liquor
companies to handbag
designers? Fashion is art- and
visually speaking, the corset
obsession is all about the
wrapping. What’s not to like
about a package that’s wrapped
and crossed repeatedly then tied
up in a big bow? Contrasting
colors and symmetrical lacing
patterns are just some of the
design elements lacing up
everything from wallets and
purses to T-shirts to fancy
champagne bottle covers made
by Gaultier.
A Corset for Every Occasion
Have all kinds of fun with a few good corset styles!
by Kali Morgan, owner of PASSIONAL (formerly Fetishes Boutique)
Corsets and professional life: Incorporating body armor into your power suit
requires poise and charm. There is an air of disdain regarding sex at work, though
most full-torso corsets cover more than some low-cut women’s tops that appear in the
workplace. Nonetheless, if your corset approach is both conservative and stylish, you
can win the approval and appreciation of both your male and female coworkers.
I have committed a faux pas or two, especially when I first started selling corsets, as
I had very little real business experience. I saw an opportunity to combine corsets with
business suits, but I was unfamiliar with corporate culture. Many offices, restaurants,
and retail businesses discourage their staff from baring the shoulders - perhaps for fear
that baring the shoulders will lead to baring the chest. If you work in an air-conditioned
office or if you are attending a convention in a cool, well ventilated location you can
avoid offense by keeping your jacket on. If you don’t want to be caught sweating,
you can avoid breaking this office taboo by wearing a transparent mesh or lace shirt
beneath your corset. If you work in a more conservative or corporate environment,
wear a jacket that buttons, revealing only a hint of your hidden treasures. Or even wear
a cincher over a blouse with a jacket over the top, and leave your jacket on ‘til staff
happy hour (when you will hopefully be safely off the clock).
I attended a few networking mixers with a friend who was part of an American Bar
Association convention a few years back dressed in a black pantsuit and a red brocade
corset. I never had more women compliment the look or express interest in the fashion
than at that particular event. I have worn pinstripe corsets with both pant and skirt suits
and jackets at Chamber of Commerce events and business expos, and the reaction is
almost universally positive. Of course, as an entrepreneur who sells corsets, I won’t be
fired for wearing them, but I never seek to make a poor impression on potential clients.
I have even dressed a very straight male friend for expos in standard black business
suit with a black silk tie and an embroidered black silk waist cincher, which sparked
the interest of many women.
Corsets as formalwear: Over the years, I have dressed dozens of young women
for proms at my store. This phenomenon began almost the moment we opened the
shop, and was part of my reason for changing the name of my store from Fetishes
Boutique to PASSIONAL (to sell corsets as fashion rather than fetish). Plus-sized girls
in particular found a corset and long skirt to be the perfect prom “gown” style that
showed off their curves in a flatteringly sexy and desirable manner.
Dressing girls for proms led to dressing women for bridal. I outfitted our first
bridal party a couple of years later in lavender brocade corsets with lapels with big
lavender circle skirts. A local model got married in Las Vegas, and we ordered a
special gold brocade corset and skirt for her nuptial adventure. Now we even exhibit
at the occasional bridal expo (in addition to bachelorette parties in the shop) including
several gay wedding expos (see p. 14).
A few basic “social etiquette” rules apply to formal events. Although many
formal gown styles are strapless, it is still considered “bad form” in some circles
to enter a room with your shoulders bare. Fortunately, there are many types of fun
shoulder covers that are perfect for formal ensembles from marabou wraps to beaded
shawls to faux mink stoles. Some of the same tricks can be used during formal
affairs as well: wear a lace or sheer shirt under the corset to cover the shoulders.
A more scandalous option is to wear a sheer or lace top with a matching shade of
bra or Nubra beneath a cincher and incorporate a sense of truth or dare into your
eveningwear (but only as appropriate to the event you are attending, i.e. if you are
a celebrity at an awards show who wants to be the
star of serious gossip)! Non-traditional weddings and
events have their own specific sets of cultural etiquette,
so when in doubt, ask the hosts. Satin gloves are a
fetishistic final option to finish off a formal ensemble,
but not a necessity (removing a glove in a receiving
line is also recommended, so if you wear jewelry over
your glove, wear it on the wrist of the glove you won’t
be removing).
Men can incorporate cinchers (corsets that only
cover the waistline) into formal ensembles by wearing
them over their shirt and pants with a matching tie (like
the more traditional cummerbund).
Corsets at Nightclubs: Nightclubs are the most fun
places to show off a corset, because there are very few
rules, if any. Mini-skirts, hotpants, petticoats or bottoms
made of anything from spandex to leather to vinyl to
fishnet work well. Barely-there sheer tops with cinchers
also make acceptable companion attire for corsets at
most nightclubs. Denim with a leather or vinyl corset
and matching shoes makes an amazing combination, but
be aware that this “casual” club combo has seemed to
upset more $200 - tank-top- wearing women at crowded
cocktail lounges than at any other parties I have visited.
The cause for offense was not inappropriate behavior,
but rather non-conformity to the “uniform” of the
crowd (much of which covered substantially less than
my corset).
Corsets as Costumes: Nothing creates as many
believable characters as the right combination of corsets
and accessories and I do mean nothing. Historical
characters from medieval wenches to queens to
knights to pirates can incorporate corsetry into the mix.
Futuristic characters like space aliens and androids can
wear metallic corsets with spandex and other shiny
materials. Fantasy creatures like demons can be created
with corsets made from fetishistic vinyl and leather. Let
your imagination run wild!
Corsets for Sex: Whether your love life
needs a hard edge or some magic dust
from the sex-faeries, you can give
yourself more confidence in the bedroom and beyond by
lacing yourself, or letting your lover bind you up into a
corset for fantasy play. Cinchers, when worn alone, show
off and allow access to all of your erogenous features.
Full body corsets can prop up the bosom and create an
impenetrable armor or cocoon to fulfill your fantasies of
power or helplessness.
Keep baby wipes handy. Baby wipes are invaluable
for cleaning up sex spillovers but more importantly they
have amazing powers for cleaning up mess on stainable
fabrics. I have witnessed blood wiped clean from a
lavender silk corset with a baby wipe without leaving
even a trace. Faerie princess lovers take note: silk
STAINS, and if you get a mess on it, you need to wipe it
off IMMEDIATELY.
Wear waterproof. Leather, vinyl and latex corsets
are much easier to clean , so if you are planning a night
of sloppy-wet, rough or extended naughtiness, stick with
these fabrics.
Play with the laces. The bedroom is a great place to
improvise with all of your extra corset lacing by pulling
the laces through your legs, around the back of your
lover’s neck to hold them close to you or anything else
your extra lace and imagination requires (or inspires).
Sexcessorize. Match up harnesses, restraints and
sex toys to your favorite corset. PASSIONAL supply
you naughties to match or contrast against your favorite
corset. www.passionalboutique.com
A Forbidden History of
a Formidable Fashion
Historically, corsets (like bras)
were closely linked with keeping
(largely female) people “in their
proper place”
-Certain medieval designs were
literally torture devices made
from steel.
-The Victorians were known to
enforce fidelity by of their women
by using complicated corset knots
that would be difficult to duplicate
should the corsets be removed
outside of the marriage bed. Then
they invented crotchless pettipants
so that women could “use the loo”
without removing their corsets.
- Actual whale bones were used
in the construction of early fabric
corsets, which were extremely
strong and inflexible (and often
resulted in broken ribs).
-Corsets were replaced by
girdles as undergarments once
elastics became popular. But they
were (and are) still worn as medical
devices for those needing back
support as well as by opera singers
for diaphragmatic support.
-Modern corsetmakers use
bendable spring or spiral stays
that are made of steel instead of
whalebone for support, which
allows the corset to bend to fit
the curves of the body and can
comfortably reduce the waist by
2-4.”
The great thing about accessories, whether bestowed
upon us by nature or by the jewelry store, is that they
can make otherwise neutral clothing into something
startling. And you too can use accessories to zip up your
budget fantasy wardrobe.
One of the best places to get inexpensive accessories
is at those mall jewelry and clothing stores that cater to
teenagers. The gothic look is very in now, so you’ll find
a huge selection of studded jewelry as well as themed
hats, gloves, purses, belts and other items. Some areas
you can focus on are:
COLLARS: My very first collar
was a black dog collar with studs that
I bought at the pet store for under $10.
Not fancy, no. But it clearly advertised
my submissive fantasies. Later on I
picked up a stunning spiked collar,
custom sized. A collar is a universal
symbol of the BDSM lifestyle. Chokers
are another sexy piece of jewelry that
brings attention to the face.
GLOVES: We don’t often see
gloves in daily life, so they assume a
feeling of eroticism when worn with
a fantasy outfit. Arm-length evening
gloves are wonderful and inexpensive,
starting around $10. They do make it
a little difficult to hold on to things, so
don’t wear them if you are doing a scene
or managing the food table. Another
great style is fingerless lace gloves, also
less than $10 at accessories shops. They
have a bit of that “Material Girl” kind
of feel, and are comfortable and cool even on a hot
summer evening.
HAIR & HATS: Try a wig! Costume stores have
stunning wigs in every hue and style for very reasonable
prices. Also pick up some sexy hair accessories as well
as gold and silver sparkles that come in gels or sprays. I
also enjoy doing my hair in one bright color like red for
the holidays or green for Saint Patrick’s Day. Shop just
after Halloween for tons of decorative items for under
$5. Don’t forget your options in hats. Cool antique hats
can be had for a song at consignment shops as well as
in specialty shops for “antique” clothing. Also pick up
some spiky hair gel and do something interesting with
your hair for the evening.
JEWELRY: Thanks to the teenage gothic subculture,
the malls are full of inexpensive jewelry stores. Look for
big bold designs, as well as the usual collars, bracelets,
finger rings and other items with studs. I have a lovely
“Story of O” silver ring that looks like a little collar.
BELTS: Studded and spiked belts can be a wonderful
addition to a plain black outfit. Also consider gold or
silver chain belts, as well as hip belts for the ladies.
SKIN & NAILS: I love to wear sparkles on my skin
and hair, something which is a fairly inexpensive item
from any beauty supply store. Gold, silver, pink, purple
– every color is available. Henna and other temporary
tattoos can give your exposed skin a bit of interest
without any permanency. If you have real tattoos, be
sure to show them off! If you have beautiful fingernails,
show them off with bright colors, or
even gold and silver. You can also pick
up a set of fake nails and use the cool
decorations and jewels. With as many
foot fetish freaks as we have, don’t
forget to show off your sexy toes.
COSMETICS: The word in fantasy
makeup is bright and bold. For ladies, go
for the sexy red and hot pink lipsticks, or
black if that’s your style. False eyelashes
are very inexpensive and will give your
eyes an exotic look, especially if you get
the ones available around Halloween
that are made with multi-colored foil.
You can also pick up faux jewels for
the eyelids that sparkle every time you
blink.
PERFUME: There’s nothing sexier
than leaning close to someone and
catching the scent of their perfume or
cologne. Remember not to overdo it, but
also remember to wear it. Every little
thing adds to your allure.
SHOES: Ahhh, shoes. Yup, I have a bit of a shoe
fetish. Does that mean I have to totter around in 5-inch
heels in the kind of pain I might not be enjoying? Of
course not. In fact, all my heeled shoes are 1.5-inch
heels or lower. If high-heeled do-me pumps make you
feel hotter than a Florida summer day, then by all means
wear them! But if not, go for the lower heels. Narrow
ones will make your feet look slimmer. Aim for bright
colors and strappy looks. If you like the tough look, try
some kickin’ boots.
STOCKINGS: Stockings are my top pick for
inexpensive sexy accoutrements. Pantyhose don’t hold
a candle to a garter peeking out from under your skirt.
AND WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, BE CREATIVE!
Chain belts can be worn as necklaces. Safety pins can
be daisy-chained into earrings and bracelets. Scarves
can be tied around the bust as a cropped top. Use yourr
imagination, and let your fantasy wardrobe go wild!

DESIGN
Happy Birthday, PASSIONAL
I was there at the infancy of what in ten years has become
Philadelphia’s home base for cutting-edge clothing and toys
for grown-up girls and boys. What a long strange trip it’s
been.
In its infancy, PASSIONAL was Fetishes Boutique, and
consisted of a web site and catalog, two racks of corsets and
latex clothing, plus an igloo of shoe and boot boxes in the
living room of a Mount Airy carriage house owned by Kali
Morgan.
In a nod to both shrewd marketing and a love of a good
party, Miss Kali created an event to which her clothes could
be worn. In 1997, the Diabolique Ball was born. A diverse
group of people came together to plan and execute a worldclass
ball like those seen in London and New York. Friends of
friends recruited models, dressed them (nice work if you can
get it), booked DJs and a night at Club Egypt, earning Fetishes
Boutique a name in the Philadelphia scene.
This was my introduction, when I became the prodigal black
sheep of the PASSIONAL family.
For those unacquainted with the joy
of stretching skin-tight latex clothing
on a nubile body, it’s not a bad way to
pass a few hours. On one day indelibly
etched into my mind, in came a pair
of nurses in their hospital greens; they
were to be naughty, latex-clad nurses
wielding gargantuan hypodermics in
the fashion show. Greens gave way
to a latex nurse’s outfit zipped on, 6-
inch black do-me pumps and a rubber
band pulled from a ponytail shaking
the tresses free, creating one of those
unveiling moments akin to the birth of
Venus.
In January 1998, two years into what
you’d think would be the greatest home business ever, a very
affordable retail space became open on Fifth and Bainbridge
Streets one block off South, the bohemian tourist shopping
and dining mecca of Philadelphia. Fetishes Boutique became
brick and mortar.
Still seeking action, the new store hooked into the internet
explosion of counterculture events around the country. Pervy
people were having parties, Fetishes Boutique had products,
and I had a van. Zany hi-jinx ensued. Road trips ensued to
Florida, Washington, D.C., Boston and Ohio to meet, outfit
and party with our people. Car crashes, fires, missed flights
and red-faced baggage inspectors reaching for rubber gloves
became commonplace. Two epic trips to vend were to London
and Jamaica.
In Philly, the store grew. We did the November ball, but there
are 11 more months in the year, birthing a monthly Café Kink
Libertine Ball became a summertime romp that started on a
cruise ship in 1999 and grew annually, last year becoming a
three-day weekend blowout with multiple little parties, selling
out an entire Atlantic City hotel. The ball itself didn’t end until
Sunday at dawn.
The Philly event of the year has remained the Diabolique Ball. As
time passed its reputation grew along with the list of beneficiary
charities serving women, children and the gay community. To
date, almost $100,000 has been donated through efforts started
by the PASSIONAL/Fetishes Boutique network of family and
friends.
Diabolique Weekend 2001 birthed a new interactive go-go
party for girls called Pousse Café (www.phillypousse.com),
which kicked off with Fetish Diva Midori gracing the stage.
That party continues monthly in South Philly.
Next the store expanded to create the Aphrodite Gallery (www.
aphroditegallery.us). Local artists and photographers would
hold receptions and shows. Works from Stephan Spiliotis,
Barbara Nitke, David Lawrence,
Images by William and others have
been featured. The gallery is also
home to the PASSION 101 Workshop
series (www.fantasyworkshops.com).
Seminars by renowned educators are
taught in the gallery, including Fetish
Diva Midori, Cleo Dubois and Tristan
Taormino on topics like “urban tantra,”
electric sex, body modification, and
– to recruit new victims – role-play and
newbie excursions to fetish evenings.
The Sexpeditions Tours supplemented
the education with field trips for thrillseeking
couples and women. A busload
of tourists hit New York to visit fetish
hotspots. Local tours have included
strip clubs, porn theaters and even an
aphrodisiac cooking class. In April 2004 the Birds and the Bees
Tour took parents and teens to the zoo, a clinic and the gay
youth center for a lesson in S-E-X.
This magazine was relaunched in 2004 as a monthly (an earlier
version had been published in 1999-2000) to help publicize the
change of the store’s name to PASSIONAL.
What some once dismissed as a costume shop catering to stars
in German smut videos has evolved into an “in your face”
fashion and sex boutique where the silicone vibrators speak to
you in French (see p. 29) and the corsets and clothing can be
worn for an exceptional evening out where dressing to impress
is for any occasion that calls for seduction, exhibition, foreplay
or afterplay. PASSIONAL has established itself as a local hub
for alternative lifestyles as well as Philadelphia’s naughty
ambassador of goodwill to the world.
Our latest weekend adventure was a retreat for latex lovers deep
in the heart of Texas -- an affair of extraordinarily fashionable
pageantry. Don’t you want to help write the next chapter? If
past experience is any indication, it’ll be a hoot!
Friends introduced me to my partner, Cindy Sproul,
in 1996/1997. Cindy had started a photographic book
project and really wanted to partner with a writer on the
project. She knew I was a writer, and asked me to work
on the project with her around February 1998.
I wasn’t dating at the time, so there was a clear-cut
time frame where we got to know each other as
artists and as professionals. It was a wonderful
opportunity just to get to know each other
creatively. After a few months, we
grew closer and began dating
that June.
On the anniversary of
our first date, we spent the
day picnicking and painting
watercolors in our favorite
park; a sweet and romantic day.
When it was time to exchange our
gifts for each other, I got on one
knee and proposed, letting Cindy
know just how precious she’d become
over the year. Cindy was teary but eager
to give her anniversary card to me. So I
opened it: on the cover was a photograph
Cindy had taken of a ring with a fire garnet...
inside was a tender message, and tied alongside
with ribbon was the real engagement ring. Unplanned,
we proposed to each other on the very same day!
Our ceremony was a little over a year later on Aug.
18, 2000. We married on a pristine island off the south
coast of Georgia, surrounded by a small group of
family and friends. Our ceremony was led by a shaman
who called in the Four Winds and led our circle in a
ceremony of joy, gratitude and intention. It was a windy
day, and at the end it rained. We saw wildlife that day
that included wild horses, wild boars, seagulls and
lots of fish, of course – a dynamic day and a suitable
beginning to our dynamic relationship together.
We read an article in a local gay newspaper that
encouraged readers to go online onto a straight wedding
gift registry and vote for a newly registered lesbian
couple as “Couple of the Year.” We researched the issue
and realized there was not a gift registry in existence
that catered to GLBT or even to alternative couples.
Things took off from there!
Creating Rainbow Wedding Network seemed timely.
Family Values
Gay Weddings: Personal and Political
By Marianne Puechl
Not only was the site launched as the first-ever GLBT
wedding gift registry, we also wanted to include a viable
means for couples and GLBT-friendly businesses to be
successful at finding each other. The site
included a nationwide directory, wedding tips
from professionals and more.
Our directories now serve the United
States, U.S. Virgin Islands and Canada,
with more than 5,000 businesses in
the Network. Couples can use these
businesses for ceremony planning,
general gift purchases, travel
needs and creating their home
together, because the directory
includes companies of all
kinds. By using these
businesses and helping
them to prosper, couples
and consumers can actively
help promote non-discrimination,
tolerance and diversity.
Our first Rainbow Wedding Expo happened
in Minneapolis, of all places! Our online directory
for the Twin Cities was taking off really well, and we
wanted to create an event where couples could find
screened, GLBT-friendly businesses. We’re excited at
the growth of the Expos – they’ve expanded to include
fashion shows, presentations by professionals and
nonprofit organizations, live musical performances,
giveaways, champagne toasts and cake-cutting
ceremonies. Our most recent event over Valentine’s Day
weekend in Atlanta included dance presentations (two
gorgeous men doing the tango!) and a lingerie fashion
show. An afterparty fund-raiser for Marriage Equality
GA featured live music by the band Geronimo and also
Jen Foster and Stephanie Callahan.
We are gearing up for Rainbow Wedding Expos in
Hartford (first annual in celebration of recent civil union
legislation), Boston (third annual) and Philadelphia
(second annual). Our goal is to continue to work on
behalf of GLBT couples to provide them with the
resources they need in an environment that is free from
awkwardness and discrimination, and instead offers
acceptance, respect and an atmosphere filled with joy.
Scrolls of Destiny
By Dr. Andromedus (as channeled by Eric Hamell)
horoscope
Aries, the ram, 21 March to 20 April: You will ram
your way into a bachelor party, expecting to meet a lot of
hot single guys and strippers. Unfortunately, you’ll find
they are all Trappist monks.
Taurus, the bull, 21 April to 21 May: Using finely
crafted bull, you will seduce and elope with a trust fund
baby. The following week, you will use another horoscope
to make a stock pick and lose your entire fortune.
Gemini, the twins, 22 May to 21 June: You will be
overjoyed to discover you have long-lost triplets. Using
their identical looks to confuse you, they will steal your
identity and force you to join their circus act.
Cancer, the crab, 22 June to 22 July: You will have
a month-long bout of PMS (even if you’re male). When
it’s over as suddenly as it began, your friends will be so
relieved that they’ll give you everything you want.
Leo, the lion, 23 July to 22 August: You will become
obsessed with your hair and comb it until your scalp is
sore. Fortunately, your visiting uncle with the preternatural
sense of smell will realize that someone spiked your stock
of Dasani TM with peyote essence. Once you’ve poured it
all down the sink, your behavior will return to normal.
Virgo, the virgin, 23 August to 23 September: One day
will pass this season on which you don’t have any new
sex partners, causing you an acute identity crisis. After
two weeks of cuddle therapy, you will regain your selfconfidence.
Libra, the scales, 24 September to 23 October: You
will visit the playground in your old neighborhood and
ride the seesaw with a ten-year-old. After he shows you
his “funny things” collection, you won’t sleep for three
days.
Scorpio, the scorpion, 24 October to 22 November:
You will meet a tall, dark and handsome stranger who will
turn you over her knee and spank you long and hard when
you get “fresh” with her. You will sleep on your stomach
for a week, but very contentedly.
Sagittarius, the archer, 23 November to 21 December:
You will toady up to the big boss in hopes of making VP,
and be rewarded with a transfer to Singapore. You will
subsequently give up your chewing tobacco habit.
Capricorn, the goat, 22 December to 20 January: You
will be disappointed to learn that joining Scientology doesn’t
get you a date with either Tom Cruise or Jenna Elfman. You
will quit them for the Unification Church.
Aquarius, the water bearer, 21 January to 19 February:
You will be abducted by aliens for the water in you, which
they’re short of. But they’ll replace it with some of their
surplus perfluorocarbon, and no one will be the wiser until
your next child is born.
Pisces, the fishes, 20 February to 20 March: You’ll wake
up one morning, look in the mirror, and be momentarily
startled to notice you look half frog-like, half fish-like. Then
you’ll remember you’re living at the bottom of the ocean
now, and you just had a long dream about the time when
you were human.
Artists April-June 2006
April: Joshua L. Pearson
Show: Sexual Oddities: Surreal Photographic Images
Reception: Friday, April 14, 7pm-9pm
Joshua Pearson is a graphic designer and photo manipulator. He has
worked with digital art for about 11 years. Erotic art is a new thing for
him considering he prefers to work with a more morbid subject matter.
Flesh and bone are his thing so erotic art is a natural evolution for him.
His style is photo surrealism, the art of making the unreal seem real. His
inspirations are artists such as H. R. Giger, M. C. Escher, DaVinci, Dali
and Mike Bohatch. He prides himself on the fact he brings the darkest
fantasies to life.
May: Juli Snyder
Show: Intimacy and Intent: erotic black and white photography
Reception: Friday, May 12, 7pm-9pm
Intimacy: not only my between subject and myself, but also between you,
the viewer, and the subject.
Intent: what happens when you are just captured by a person? You are so
taken by them that you almost panic. It is erotic.
Juli graduated cum laude from Temple/Tyler in 2005. She has shown her
work at The Beehive Salon, Big Jar Books and Mugshots and has also
been involved with Inliquid’s Art for the Cash Poor for the past couple
years.
June: Jonathan Blount
Show: A Celebration of the Male Form: Gay erotic oils and charcoal
Reception: Friday, June 9, 7pm-9pm
Jonathan Blount is a native Philadelphian. He began to pursue his artistic
disposition during high school. At first, Jon decided to develop his
creativity by becoming a pastry chef but he soon realized that he needed
to change from cake to canvas.
Jon’s early oils were expressions of his inner voice, translating what he
was feeling and hearing internally into paint. As Jon matured, he realized
that he loved painting and drawing the male form. He describes his
approach to artistically rendering the male form as starting with shadow
and working into the light.

Good Vibes
A Brief History of the Vibrator
In the 19th century, forward-thinking medical and
psychiatric professionals had replaced the medieval method
of treating “hysteria” in women by removing their internal
organs (hysterectomy) in favor of the kinder, gentler
“manual stimulation” of a woman’s clitoris to relieve her
of stress.
According to sexologist Carol Queen, “The reason the
vibrator was adopted had to do with the time it took to bring
women to orgasm by hand!” Electric vibrators provided a
quicker and less “intimate” method of achieving the desired
result of less stressed, more satisfied female patients.
American doctors devised a steam-driven, large, heavy
vibrator in the late 19th century, which was employed only
in hospitals for these “experimental” medical procedures.
Only at the beginning of the 20th century did the vibrator
become accessible to the public. Next to sewing machines
and toasters, vibrators were some of the first appliances that
used household electrical power.
By the mid-1920s, women could purchase vibrators
through mail-order catalogs from Sears and other
companies. Information about these products appeared in
women’s journals and household magazines with a message
that electric massagers were generally good for the health
and well-being of women. However, when vibrators were
employed in pornographic films, discussions became more
hush-hush.
The modern, insertable vibrators which now appear in
mail order catalogs and sporting goods stores first appeared
in porn around 1966. These early, insertable models
enjoyed popularity throughout the ‘70s and early ‘80s,
especially in male-centered pornographic bookstores,
many with optional sleeves that could be added to make
them look like penises.
The vibrator has had a revival in the past decades
thanks to the sexual revolution and technical progress.
Today’s vibrators and massagers are small, waterproof
and cordless, available in all colors, sizes and forms,
and often designed to achieve specific sensory effects
on specific body parts. Drugstores and department stores
even offer vibrating condoms along with lubricants and
other family planning products.
FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO VIBRATE! Despite
the thousands of sex toy designs available on the market,
five states currently outlaw the sale and use of “sexual”
devices. These devices are outlawed despite medical
studies showing – time and time again – that around 70
percent of women require clitoral stimulation beyond
what usually occurs during penis-vagina intercourse in
order to achieve orgasm. One wonders if local and state
governments would be so quick to outlaw orgasms for 70
percent of the male populace under their jurisdictions.
freedoms of expression and association, visit www.
leave you messages for when you are playing with your toys all by yourself.
Finally, you can catch a buzz without that deafening buzz... and while the
included “slow ride” is a bit, well, slow the French boy was great (it helps not
to speak a syllable of French). The stylish packaging makes this the perfect gift,
Sexual Healing
The Male G-Spot
Dear PASSIONAL: I read about the male G-spot in
your last issue. Is there such a thing?
The answer is absolutely, positively, YES.
The male G-spot is the prostate – actually the
prostate-perineum, dime-sized soft spots between the
anus and scrotum. The important nerves that control
the sexual organs, including orgasm and
ejaculation, all meet in the prostate and
the perineum area. (Sounds like a place
to party to me. ) This area is a
man’s “command center” for sexual
pleasure.
Massaging the prostate has been
known to maintain and increase sexual
health for men since ancient times.
Men who suffer from diseases such
as prostatitis and BPH (non-cancerous
enlarged prostate) can get relief through
regular prostate massage, traditionally
given manually by a urologist.
Now, however, most doctors only
check the prostate, and if they find a
problem prefer to cut it out or prescribe
medication.
In traditional Japanese families,
spouses often perform prostate
massage to promote their partners’
health. Could this be why Asian men
tend to have lower rates of prostate
enlargement and cancer than their
American counterparts?
Prostate massage is becoming more
widely recommended as researchers
discover its ability to complement and
increase the effectiveness of antibiotics, antimicrobials
or herbal remedies by facilitating circulation to the
gland. Also, many find that prostate massage itself is
successful where other remedies have failed.
Blood, which carries oxygen to every cell of the body,
is vital to physical health. Only with an abundant supply
of oxygen can each cell process out toxins and waste,
while continually renewing itself. This is especially true
of the prostate. Dependent on some of the tiniest blood
passages in the body for its blood and oxygen, it relies
on a steady flow of both. When the flow is crimped or
By Naughty Nurse Vi
interrupted, the prostate becomes a target for infection,
enlargement or cancer.
Most prostates (like bladders) are choked off to
some degree by surrounding tight muscles and tissues
– primarily the abductors and obliques. If muscles are
tight, the prostate doesn’t expand and contract with each
breath, and doesn’t get the blood and oxygen it needs to
remain healthy. This tightness is quite
easy to release by external and internal
massage.
Men can massage their own
prostates and surrounding areas.
Lie on your back with legs extended.
Now bend your knees and hips,
drawing your knees up to your chest.
Then spread your knees apart and
press the soles of your feet together
firmly. Keep your soles pressed
together as you extend your legs to the
floor. Repeat this up-and-down motion
6-12 times daily while massaging the
prostate (the firm lump just above the
anus) and perineum.
External prostate massage is a
good start, but it’s more effective
when accompanied by internal
massage. It may be best to be massaged
by a professional first. However, if
your lover is willing, he or she can
quickly learn to perform the massage.
(Now this seems like a whole lot more
fun). This technique has been a part
of tantric practice for thousands of
years.
CONTINUED Insert a lubricated
index finger into the anus, and then
gently massage around the chestnut-sized-and shaped
prostate. The prostate is found at about the length of
your index finger up against the top wall towards the
navel. The probing finger inside of the rectum will feel
a groove down the middle of the prostate that separates
the two lobes of the prostate. (One should check for
shape, size and consistency, as well as for masses.)
Gradually increase finger pressure, until firm.
Sexual Healing
Continued
Expand the massage to the surrounding muscles on
both sides, changing hands and position as necessary.
These muscles, which may be sore and hard at first, will
release and soften dramatically with continued massage.
This process may be uncomfortable or painful at first.
Tolerate as much as you can at each session. You may
feel like you have to move your bowels. This is due to
the pressure of the finger inside your rectum and the
release of prostatic fluid into your urethra.
Less than 10 percent of men experience dizziness
or fainting with this first drainage/massage. You may
yell and scream a lot; that’s fine, for it helps to release
stuck emotions (though it doesn’t release the finger
stuck in your ass
). You may
be surprised at how
great you feel as
you release these
areas.
Prostate massage
feels better when
you are somewhat
erect and excited,
and it will produce
a very thrilling
ejaculation if it’s
done during sex or
masturbation. Some
relate increased
sensitivity and
intensity when the
penis is massaged
at the same time
as the prostate.
Some men have
passed out from
the sheer pleasure,
so be prepared for an amazing sexual experience. The
orgasm that prostate massage produces is very different
and intense than one produced merely by ejaculation.
Tantrics call it “The Lion,” as men roar and shake with
this type of orgasm.
A single massage can produce dramatic progress,
freeing the prostate gland and surrounding tissues,
increasing the flow of blood and energy to the prostate
and releasing the energy that has been trapped in this
sensitive area. This newfound physical openness allows
more blood and oxygen to the area, creating healing
and general softness of the prostate. It will also enhance
your lovemaking.
Regular sexual activity is also good for the prostate.
The rush of blood and energy, as well as the prostate’s
pulsations during ejaculation, help the gland to maintain
its muscular strength and freedom, and also act to cleanse
the organ. Regular (but not too frequent) ejaculation
also helps to release the emotional blockages that cause
hardness and tightening of the prostate and surrounding
tissues. In general, massage, visualization, lovemaking
and stretching increase blood flow in the area.
It has been
reported that
men with acute
prostatitis (infection/
i n f l a m m a t i o n
of the prostate)
e x p e r i e n c e d
beneficial flushing
and dissipation
of their pain after
having prostate
massage performed.
Some medical
opinion is opposed
to prostatic massage
in cases of acute
prostatitis or cancer.
However, many
alternative medicine
practitioners see
great benefits with
little risk. You must
make your own
decision.
Medical science accepts that it is normal for men
over age 50 to have experienced prostate problems.
Although prostate problems may be common, they are
not normal; they are abnormal. There is no need for
any man to have prostate problems. Prostate problems
do not occur overnight, and with regular massage and
notation of size and tenderness of the prostate, prostate
problems may never occur at all or, if there are prostate
problems already present, may be reversed.
SexposÉ
I consider myself a free spirit. I am unhappy sitting
at a desk for hours or working to benefit someone else.
I decided last year on my birthday that I never wanted
to be chained down again. I even cringe at the thought
of going back to an office or retail setting.
I work as an exotic dancer, and also I do phone sex
via my Web site, www.TheFleshBox.com. I love both
phone sex and dancing. I enjoy being close to a stranger
whom I may never see again, in a safe environment. I
get to be as intimate as I am comfortable with being,
and I like the challenge of trying to make someone
else get off.
Both occupations are similar because with each, I
must try to get inside the person’s head. I like to spend
time with every customer, learning what pleases him
and what gets him closer to the ultimate ending.
The phone work began when I had been go-go
dancing for years, and I wanted to try something
different. After I had spent a few months being ill,
I started doing the phone work, which is something
you can do from home when you are too ill to leave
the house. I am feeling better now, but have found
that phone sex is a great way to keep extra income
coming in.
Talking dirty is easy. The hard part is learning
not to be afraid to do it. You also must be very openminded
and understand that not everyone likes the
same things. I also found that it is easy to use questions
Aural Fantasy
to get to the root of the call so that I can quickly engage
in the fantasy.
It’s funny. The majority of calls are from men who
want to talk about me using a strap-on on them, which is a
good thing, because those are my favorite calls. My least
favorite kind of call is from men who just want to talk
and tell me about their problems. I don’t want to hear that
stuff, I want to make you cum!
The Flesh Box is a general name for any business I
decide to do. Having the Web site is a great, simple way
to get people to find you. It’s easier than remembering a
phone number, and you can go to the site and see pictures,
read stories and contact me.
Phone sex is a fun way to talk to strangers, make
friends, get off – and make cash, too. My boyfriend has
participated with me during calls on several occasions.
We even have a CD of us having sex for sale on www.
TheFleshBox.com.
Just like any business, you must put the time and effort
in to reap any rewards. I recommend that everyone try it
at least once, and be all you can pretend to be!
What do we do or should we do when we know
of a predator that uses the BDSM lifestyle to prey on
submissives?
This has been a topic of much concern in my circle
these days. What distinguishes a predator from the rest
of the phreaks? How do you deal with someone that
is displaying predator-like characteristics? What are
predator-like characteristics? The questions can go on
and on.
First let’s define predator. A predator is “one that
preys, destroys, or devours,” according to the Merriam-
Webster Dictionary. Going with the most applicable
definition, prey conversely means “one that is helpless
or unable to resist attack.” In this subculture, defining a
predator is very difficult, as you are already dealing with
taboo subjects. I think the thing that defines a predator is
someone’s inability to respect other people’s boundaries
and displaying behaviors that are contrary to what is
considered safe, sane and consensual. That is about the
best definition I could
come up with after
giving it considerable
thought.
Regardless of
who you are, there is
some part of you that
“wants” to do this.
Therefore activities,
regardless of the desire
to do them for our
tops and dominants,
are consensual, even
if they aren’t always
appreciated.
A predator, in my
opinion, will not only
defy the consensual
part of this, but they
will break boundaries
and hard limits. Some
predators may call this “pushing limits.” There is
a difference between pushing limits and breaking
boundaries. Hard limits are there for a reason, and
anyone that does not have hard limits, in my experience,
does not need them. They don’t need them because they
trust their partners not to get the chainsaw out.
Bottoms Up
Fantasy vs. Abuse
By Sarah
Another warning sign that I got from the YWCA is
someone that monopolizes your time and will not let
you have friends or family. Anyone who will isolate
you from the world probably is not looking out for your
best interests. While not every one of us enjoys the
public spotlight while we are beating each other black
and blue, there is a difference between not being public
with your kink and not being able to have any friends or
family. This is not normal and not healthy. This is also
my most common advice to tops: let your submissive
have friends and interests outside the relationship.
There are many characteristics marking predators,
but the best advice I can give is to use some common
sense. Bad behavior is not acceptable just because they
are the ones in control. In fact, in most cases I think they
should have the most control, and that includes control
of themselves. Most of the time, if it isn’t healthy for
vanilla relationships, it isn’t healthy for this type of
relationship either.
Dealing with
predators is never going
to be easy. I’ve heard
talk of databases and,
at one time, even an
elected committee to
deal with complaints.
If someone is behaving
dangerously or abusing
you physically,
emotionally or sexually,
report it to the police
or go to a counselor
or some other type of
professional that can
tell you if the behavior
is normal.
On the flipside, do
not distort facts. If you
are hurt and upset over
a breakup, it’s OK.
Trust me, it’s never easy. That is no reason to involve
the police and everyone else in your difficulties. If you
can not distinguish what it is, talk to someone you trust
to give you an honest answer, and see if they think it is
someone who is preying on the sweet and innocent.
The Body Politic
The 2006 Midterm: Elections That REALLY MATTER
By Judy Guerin
It’s election year again, and many of you probably are
thinking, “No one is running for president. It can’t be too
important.” You couldn’t be more wrong. If you believe
in sexual freedom, if you want to keep the government
out of our bedroom and playrooms, if you value privacy
and the right to make our own decisions about our bodies
- then these are the most important midterm elections in
recent memory. There are two reasons that these elections
are critical for our personal liberties and for our cause of
sexual freedom.
One reason is that we must close
the door that now stands wide open for
congressional approval of President
Bush’s court. One more conservative
on the Supreme Court could mean
the death of abortion rights. President
Bush has succeeded in putting two
very conservative new justices on the
Supreme Court – Roberts and Alito.
Fortunately, one of these appointments
replaces the equally conservative
Chief Justice Rehnquist. But one more
confirmation of a social conservative
to the court and abortion rights are in
grave danger, as are important privacy
decisions like the right of privacy in
sodomy and other matters.
The Religious Right clearly sees
this coming. They have begun setting
up cases that squarely raise the
fundamentalist issues and that will
reach the Supreme Court in three years
or so. They have gotten a sweeping
anti-abortion law enacted in South
Dakota that, when it is taken to court and ultimately to
the Supreme Court, will be a dead-on and comprehensive
assault on Roe v. Wade. Their obvious expectation is
that, by the time that case gets to the Supreme Court,
at least one more Bush-appointed justice will be on the
bench, creating a solid 5-4 majority for overturning Roe
v. Wade.
As things stand now, the anti-abortion strategy looks
likely to succeed. As long as the Republican Party controls
the Senate, they have a majority of and chairmanship of
the Judiciary Committee that decides whether to send
nominations to a confirmation vote by the full Senate.
And, in that vote, approval of the President’s nominee
is overwhelmingly likely if conservative Republican
Senators are in the majority.
This is what makes this midterm election so
critical. The Bush administration’s poll ratings
are lower than for any president since Nixon. The
question is not whether there is a chance to defeat
Republican Senators and House members; the issue
is whether those who oppose the Religious Right’s
control of Congress will vote in sufficient numbers
to unseat enough incumbents to swing control of the
Senate – and possibly even the
House – to the Democrats.
The second important issue
at stake is to take control of the
Republican Party away from the
Religious Right. I am speaking
to Republicans that feel strongly
about personal privacy, about
making government smaller and
less intrusive, about freedom to
live your life the way you want
to live it. Advocates of smaller
government and of civil rights
in the tradition of Abraham
Lincoln, have been shouldered
aside by social zealots like Karl
Rove, John Ashcroft and George
W. Bush. There is a very real
movement getting under way
to take back the Republican
party. Former senator John
Danforth, a Protestant minister
and a respected Republican,
feels that fundamentalists that
have hijacked his party are wrong in their harsh
interpretation of Christian principles. He calls for
traditional Republicans to throw these rascals out,
and he needs your help. Work for the nomination of
moderate Republican candidates in place of the social
conservatives and by making it clear to your party
that returning to the mainstream is the key to raising
those now-low poll numbers.
This is not a year to stay home and be apathetic.
Get involved, work hard for the right candidates
and – above all – vote out those whose agenda is
to curtail our freedoms! For more information, visit
The Body Politic
Indecent Exposure: A Step Backward
In the end the Supreme Court has decided not to hear our case against the Communications Decency Act. They have
affirmed the decision of the District Court to leave this unfair law in place. I am deeply disappointed. I believe their
decision was motivated by the current political climate, and not based on our constitution or the law.
This law makes it a felony crime in the United States to put obscene material on the internet, in effect criminalizing
free speech. Material is obscene if it is found by a jury to “appeal to the prurient interest in sex” and be “patently
offensive” according to local “community standards.”
We no longer live in a world where small communities can separate themselves from the rest of the universe. Since
its beginning, the Internet has been considered a kind of last frontier, or free cosmos of its own, which can be accessed by
everyone, everywhere, all the time. I can’t prevent people living in a small enclave in the middle of the Bible Belt from
finding my photographs there objectionable, then going to their local district attorney’s office to demand that a federal
obscenity case be brought against me under the CDA. I would then face huge legal fees, fines and jail sentences.
As the CDA is enforced in our country, most prudent people will hesitate to put up a website with any sexually based
text or imagery. Their free speech will be “chilled” out of the fear of what their own government might do to them. In
effect, this gives the people in one small neighborhood the ability to tell people all over the world what they’re allowed
to look at on the Internet.
The Communications Decency Act and other repressive laws like it are dangerous. They are supposedly created to
protect our children, but their real purpose is to limit adult free speech. Children’s access to sexual information on the
Internet can be controlled in each household by installing easy-to-use filtering software. It’s a technological problem,
which should not be solved by making more invasive laws.
We should have won this in the Supreme Court. This isn’t a partisan issue, it’s about the First Amendment. The good
news is that we have proven that the current obscenity laws don’t work and we’ve changed the way future obscenity
cases will be judged (details at http://jwirenius.livejournal.com/ entry for March 21, 2006).
