YARN
8 ply Acrylic 1 x 300g ball
Needles
A pair 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Knitting Needles or size that
gives correct tension/gauge.
Materials
A Yarn Needle; 1 Stitch Holder; 2 Safety Pins; 3 Buttons.
TENSION/gauge
21 sts and 29 rows to 10 cm/4 ins over stocking st, using
4.00mm (US 6), (UK 4) Knitting Needles.
Note - Correct tension/gauge is essential for a successful
handknit.
Abbreviations
St/s - stitch/es, K - Knit, P - Purl, stocking st - 1 row K, 1 row
P, RS - right side, WS - wrong side, alt - alternate, beg - begin/
ning, foll - follow/ing, rem - remain/ing, cont - continue, rep
- repeat/ing, M1 - make 1, by picking up loop lying before next
st, slip onto left hand needle and knit through back of loop, dec
- decrease one st by knitting or purling 2 sts together.
CREATE
Back
Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles, cast on 65 (71-77-85)
sts.
1st row (RS) - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.
Rep 1st row 3 times = 4 rows moss st in all.
Work in stocking st until work measures 24 (26-29-32) cms/9½
(10½-11½-13) ins from beg, ending with a purl row.
Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark beg of
armholes.
Cont in stocking st until armhole measures 13 (14-15-16)

5 (5½-6-6½) ins from beg, ending with a purl row.
Shape shoulders - Cast/bind off 11 (12-13-15) sts at beg of
next 2 rows, then 11 (12-13-14) sts at beg of foll 2 rows.
Leave rem 21 (23-25-27) sts on stitch holder.
Left Front
Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles, cast on 39 (41-43-47)
sts.
Work 3 rows moss st as for Back. **
4th row - Moss 7, slip these 7 sts onto a safety pin and leave
for Left Front Band, moss to end, dec one st in centre = 31
(33-35-39) sts.
Work in stocking st, until work measures same as Back to
coloured threads, ending with a purl row.
Tie a coloured thread at end of last row to mark beg of armhole.
Cont in stocking st until there are 11 (13-15-15) rows less than
Back to beg of shoulder shaping, thus ending with a knit row.
Shape neck - Next row (WS) - Cast/bind off 5 (5-5-6) sts, purl
to end = 26 (28-30-33) sts.
Dec one st at neck edge in next row, then in foll alt rows until 22
(24-26-29) sts rem. Work 3 (5-7-7) rows.
Shape shoulder - Cast/bind off 11 (12-13-15) sts at beg of next
row. Work 1 row. Cast/bind off rem 11 (12-13-14) sts.
Right Front
Work as for Left Front to **.
4th row - Moss to last 7 sts, dec one st in centre, slip next 7 sts
onto a safety pin for Right Front Band = 31 (33-35-39) sts.
Work in stocking st, until work measures same as Back to
coloured threads, ending with a purl row.
Tie a coloured thread at beg of last row to mark beg of armhole.
Cont in stocking st until there are 12 (14-16-16) rows
less than Back to beg of shoulder shaping, thus ending
with a purl row.
Shape neck - Next row (RS) - Cast/bind off 5 (5-5-6)
sts, knit to end = 26 (28-30-33) sts.
Dec one st at neck edge in foll alt rows until 22 (24-26-
29) sts rem. Work 4 (6-8-8) rows.
Shape shoulder - Complete as for Left Front.
Sleeve (make 2)
Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles, cast on 33 (35-
37-39) sts.
Work 4 rows moss st as for lower band of Back.
Work 4 rows stocking st.
5th row - K2, M1, knit to last 2 sts, M1, K2.
Cont increasing one st (as before) at each end of every
foll 4th row until there are 51 (55-51-47) sts, then in
every foll 6th row until there are 53 (57-61-65) sts.
Cont without shaping until work measures 21 (23-28-33)
cms/8½ (9-11-13) ins from beg, ending with a purl row.
Cast/bind off loosely.
Left Front Band for Girl
With RS facing and using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles,
moss across 7 sts from Left Front Band safety pin.
Work 93 (101-111-121) rows moss st.
Leave sts on a spare needle. Break off yarn.
Right Front Band for Girl
With WS facing and using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles,
moss across 7 sts from Right Front Band safety pin.
Work 64 (64-66-68) rows moss st.
*** Next row - Moss 3, cast/bind off 2 sts, moss 2.
Next row - Moss 2, turn, cast on 2 sts, turn, moss 2 =
buttonhole. Work 14 (18-22-26) rows moss st.
Rep buttonhole rows once = 2 buttonholes. ***
Work 11 (15-19-23) rows moss st.
Leave sts on needle. Do not break off yarn.
Left Front Band for Boy
With RS facing and using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles,
moss across 7 sts from Left Front Band safety pin.
Work 63 (63-65-67) rows moss st.
Work as for Right Front Band for Girl from *** to ***.
Work 10 (14-18-22) rows moss st.
Leave sts on a spare needle. Break off yarn.
Right Front Band for Boy
With WS facing and using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles,
moss across 7 sts from Right Front Band safety pin.
Work 95 (103-113-123) rows moss st.
Leave sts on needle. Do not break off yarn.
Neckband
Using yarn needle and back stitch, join shoulder seams.
With RS facing, using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles and
holding right front band sts, knit up 13 (14-15-17) sts
evenly along right side of neck, knit across sts from back
stitch holder, knit up 13 (14-15-17) sts evenly along left
side of neck, then moss across left front band sts = 61
(65-69-75) sts.
Work 7 rows moss st, working a buttonhole (as before) in
foll 2nd and 3rd rows = 3 buttonholes in total.
Cast/bind off loosely in moss st.
FINISHING
With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly
on wrong side. Using yarn needle, darn in all ends.
Using yarn needle and back stitch, sew in sleeves evenly
between coloured threads, placing centre of sleeves to
shoulder seams. Join side and sleeve seams. Using a flat
seam, sew front bands in position. Sew on buttons.
