Kid’s Cardigan (Intermediate)<br />

MEASUREMENTS<br />

Years 1 (2-4-6)<br />

Fits underarm 50 (55-60-65) cms/20 (22-24-26) ins<br />

To measure 59 (65-72-79) cms/23½ (26-29-31½) ins<br />

Length 37 (40-44-48) cms/15 (16-17½-19) ins<br />

Sleeve Length 21 (23-28-33) cms/8½ (9-11-13) ins<br />

YARN<br />

8 ply Acrylic 1 x 300g ball<br />

Needles<br />

A pair 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) <strong>Knitting</strong> Needles or size that<br />

gives correct tension/gauge.<br />

Materials<br />

A Yarn Needle; 1 Stitch Holder; 2 Safety Pins; 3 Buttons.<br />

TENSION/gauge<br />

21 sts and 29 rows to 10 cm/4 ins over stocking st, using<br />

4.00mm (US 6), (UK 4) <strong>Knitting</strong> Needles.<br />

Note - Correct tension/gauge is essential for a successful<br />

handknit.<br />

Abbreviations<br />

St/s - stitch/es, K - Knit, P - Purl, stocking st - 1 row K, 1 row<br />

P, RS - right side, WS - wrong side, alt - alternate, beg - begin/<br />

ning, foll - follow/ing, rem - remain/ing, cont - continue, rep<br />

- repeat/ing, M1 - make 1, by picking up loop lying before next<br />

st, slip onto left hand needle and knit through back of loop, dec<br />

- decrease one st by knitting or purling 2 sts together.<br />

CREATE<br />

Back<br />

Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles, cast on 65 (71-77-85)<br />

sts.<br />

1st row (RS) - K1, * P1, K1, rep from * to end.<br />

Rep 1st row 3 times = 4 rows moss st in all.<br />

Work in stocking st until work measures 24 (26-29-32) cms/9½<br />

(10½-11½-13) ins from beg, ending with a purl row.<br />

Tie a coloured thread at each end of last row to mark beg of<br />

armholes.<br />

Cont in stocking st until armhole measures 13 (14-15-16)<br />

cms/<br />

5 (5½-6-6½) ins from beg, ending with a purl row.<br />

Shape shoulders - Cast/bind off 11 (12-13-15) sts at beg of<br />

next 2 rows, then 11 (12-13-14) sts at beg of foll 2 rows.<br />

Leave rem 21 (23-25-27) sts on stitch holder.<br />

Left Front<br />

Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles, cast on 39 (41-43-47)<br />

sts.<br />

Work 3 rows moss st as for Back. **<br />

4th row - Moss 7, slip these 7 sts onto a safety pin and leave<br />

for Left Front Band, moss to end, dec one st in centre = 31<br />

(33-35-39) sts.<br />

Work in stocking st, until work measures same as Back to<br />

coloured threads, ending with a purl row.<br />

Tie a coloured thread at end of last row to mark beg of armhole.<br />

Cont in stocking st until there are 11 (13-15-15) rows less than<br />

Back to beg of shoulder shaping, thus ending with a knit row.<br />

Shape neck - Next row (WS) - Cast/bind off 5 (5-5-6) sts, purl<br />

to end = 26 (28-30-33) sts.<br />

Dec one st at neck edge in next row, then in foll alt rows until 22<br />

(24-26-29) sts rem. Work 3 (5-7-7) rows.<br />

Shape shoulder - Cast/bind off 11 (12-13-15) sts at beg of next<br />

row. Work 1 row. Cast/bind off rem 11 (12-13-14) sts.<br />

Right Front<br />

Work as for Left Front to **.<br />

4th row - Moss to last 7 sts, dec one st in centre, slip next 7 sts<br />

onto a safety pin for Right Front Band = 31 (33-35-39) sts.<br />

Work in stocking st, until work measures same as Back to<br />

coloured threads, ending with a purl row.<br />

Tie a coloured thread at beg of last row to mark beg of armhole.<br />

Cont in stocking st until there are 12 (14-16-16) rows<br />

less than Back to beg of shoulder shaping, thus ending<br />

with a purl row.<br />

Shape neck - Next row (RS) - Cast/bind off 5 (5-5-6)<br />

sts, knit to end = 26 (28-30-33) sts.<br />

Dec one st at neck edge in foll alt rows until 22 (24-26-<br />

29) sts rem. Work 4 (6-8-8) rows.<br />

Shape shoulder - Complete as for Left Front.<br />

Sleeve (make 2)<br />

Using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles, cast on 33 (35-<br />

37-39) sts.<br />

Work 4 rows moss st as for lower band of Back.<br />

Work 4 rows stocking st.<br />

5th row - K2, M1, knit to last 2 sts, M1, K2.<br />

Cont increasing one st (as before) at each end of every<br />

foll 4th row until there are 51 (55-51-47) sts, then in<br />

every foll 6th row until there are 53 (57-61-65) sts.<br />

Cont without shaping until work measures 21 (23-28-33)<br />

cms/8½ (9-11-13) ins from beg, ending with a purl row.<br />

Cast/bind off loosely.<br />

Left Front Band for Girl<br />

With RS facing and using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles,<br />

moss across 7 sts from Left Front Band safety pin.<br />

Work 93 (101-111-121) rows moss st.<br />

Leave sts on a spare needle. Break off yarn.<br />

Right Front Band for Girl<br />

With WS facing and using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles,<br />

moss across 7 sts from Right Front Band safety pin.<br />

Work 64 (64-66-68) rows moss st.<br />

*** Next row - Moss 3, cast/bind off 2 sts, moss 2.<br />

Next row - Moss 2, turn, cast on 2 sts, turn, moss 2 =<br />

buttonhole. Work 14 (18-22-26) rows moss st.<br />

Rep buttonhole rows once = 2 buttonholes. ***<br />

Work 11 (15-19-23) rows moss st.<br />

Leave sts on needle. Do not break off yarn.<br />

Left Front Band for Boy<br />

With RS facing and using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles,<br />

moss across 7 sts from Left Front Band safety pin.<br />

Work 63 (63-65-67) rows moss st.<br />

Work as for Right Front Band for Girl from *** to ***.<br />

Work 10 (14-18-22) rows moss st.<br />

Leave sts on a spare needle. Break off yarn.<br />

Right Front Band for Boy<br />

With WS facing and using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles,<br />

moss across 7 sts from Right Front Band safety pin.<br />

Work 95 (103-113-123) rows moss st.<br />

Leave sts on needle. Do not break off yarn.<br />

Neckband<br />

Using yarn needle and back stitch, join shoulder seams.<br />

With RS facing, using 4.00mm (US 6), (UK 8) Needles and<br />

holding right front band sts, knit up 13 (14-15-17) sts<br />

evenly along right side of neck, knit across sts from back<br />

stitch holder, knit up 13 (14-15-17) sts evenly along left<br />

side of neck, then moss across left front band sts = 61<br />

(65-69-75) sts.<br />

Work 7 rows moss st, working a buttonhole (as before) in<br />

foll 2nd and 3rd rows = 3 buttonholes in total.<br />

Cast/bind off loosely in moss st.<br />

FINISHING<br />

With a slightly damp cloth and warm iron, press lightly<br />

on wrong side. Using yarn needle, darn in all ends.<br />

Using yarn needle and back stitch, sew in sleeves evenly<br />

between coloured threads, placing centre of sleeves to<br />

shoulder seams. Join side and sleeve seams. Using a flat<br />

seam, sew front bands in position. Sew on buttons.<br />
