The birth of his first grandchild gave John Lazo Jr., MD, renewed
urgency in minding his own heart. Four months after Justin’s
birth, he had an aortic valve replacement and coronary artery
bypass at Parma Hospital, where he has cared for patients in the
Emergency Department over the past three decades.

Celebrate with us at a gala honoring 50 years of
commitment to the community
Next month, Parma Community
General Hospital celebrates 50 years of
commitment to our
community at our
anniversary gala
on June 18. Having
recently turned 50
myself, I realize that
not everything gets
better with age, but your Hospital has
achieved this milestone with distinction.
We have always strived to be a good
neighbor and provide the care you have
needed close to home. We have touched
the lives of hundreds of thousands of you
over that time, whether you were among
the babies brought into the world here or
we were among the last caregivers for a
loved one in their final days.
We have been an employer to
thousands and have supported countless
community events and initiatives. But,
like the communities we serve, we
have grown into so much more.
This hospital, which opened
in 1961 to fill a need in a
rapidly growing suburb,
provides state-of-the-art
cardiac care and excels in
orthopedics, therapy and rehabilitation.
Through partnerships with other
hospitals, such as the Cleveland Clinic
for state-of-the art cardiothoracic surgery
and cancer care and UH Rainbow Babies
& Children’s Hospital for neonatology
coverage. As you will read in this issue,
Parma Hospital is the best place to be for
top-notch, personalized care, whether
you’re facing a cardiac emergency, a lifethreatening
bee sting or life-changing
bariatric surgery.
We have never lost sight
of our mission of providing
excellent, personalized
healthcare. We know that
treating you better begins
with knowing you better, and that is why we
invite you to celebrate with us this June.
Here’s to the next 50 years!
An evening in the Garden
Terrence G. Deis
President & CEO
An evening of fun and fellowship
was held in honor and
thanksgiving for the generous
people who make the Parma
Hospital Health Care Foundation’s
work possible. The message
was that the philanthropic
investments that donors made
are still producing returns.
“We’re accustomed to
understanding investments
in financial terms, where you
invest and later realize returns
of income or appreciated
value,” said Foundation Executive
Director Marcia Ferguson.
“But likewise, when you invest
philanthropically, your investment
continues to benefit the
community for years to come.”
Ferguson expressed profound
appreciation for donors
who invest in:
· Seasons of Life Hospice
for patients with life-limiting
circumstances. This model of
care continues to serve hundreds
of families and demonstrates
new ways of thinking
about how care can be given.
· ElderCenter fills a gap in
care for older adults and their
families. The staff has added
new programs such as the
innovative DAY program of
transitional care, which is being
studied nationally.
· The Tri-C Nursing
Program at Parma Hospital, a
collaborative partnership that
continues to bring more nurse
leaders to the bedside.
· The Parma Health Ministry,
a clinic for working adults
who live without adequate
coverage, keeping them healthy
on their journey to a better life.
· Education support for
people pursuing health care
fields and scholarships for
young people who give a lot to
the community and continue
to produce returns for the community.
“We are deeply grateful
for all of these things and
much more, which are possible
because of the philanthropic
investments made by Foundation
donors,” said Ferguson.
Bee sting triggers severe medical crisis
Even on a picture-perfect
summer day, danger may lurk in
unseen places.
Ed Glowski of North Royalton
was getting ready for an
afternoon in his backyard swimming
pool last July when he was
stung by a paper wasp. He shook
off the pain and headed for the
pool, but within minutes wasn’t
feeling well.
Fortunately, this father of
four teenagers mentioned the
startling incident to his wife before
going inside their home and
collapsing in the kitchen.
“We almost lost him,” says
Pam Glowski, who remembers
every detail of what began as an
ideal summer day for relaxing
outside. “He went to his knees
and started shaking. He was
turning purple and his pupils
went to pinpoints. His throat,
with the anaphylaxis, had started
closing up immediately.
“If we didn’t have Parma
Hospital nearby, we may not
have been able to get him
the care he needed in time.”
Less than 1 percent of people
stung each year in the United
States have a severe reaction
like Glowski. While Glowski
had previously experienced bee
stings, none had ever sparked
such a severe medical crisis.
“The initial insult, through
bee venom, creates a cascade of
reactions throughout the body,
which basically start to shut
the body down,” said Gregory
Hickey, DO, the medical director
of ICU Services and a pulmonologist
who saw Glowski.
“You lose the ability to maintain
blood pressure and normal homeostasis,
and experience acute
bronchospasms (tightening of
muscles of the airways) and
swelling in the extremities.”
An ambulance brought
Glowski to Parma Hospital’s
Emergency Department.
He was intubated and admitted
to the Intensive Care Unit,
where his family was continually
After a severe sting sent him into anaphylactic shock,
Ed Glowski goes weekly for treatments with Todd
Rambasek, MD to build up his immunity to bee venom.
impressed by unflinching and
unfailing efforts to keep Glowski
stable.
The family was particularly
grateful for the clinical expertise
and honest communication
from staff nurses and the team
of specialists. For ICU patients,
taking care of the family is a major
aspect of caring for critically
ill patients.
“It’s essential for the staff
to be communicating with one
another in caring for critically
ill patients and keeping family
members apprised of plans and
progress,” Dr. Hickey said. “They
can share in day-to-day changes
and be prepared for the days to
come.”
Nephrologist
Ronald Flauto,
DO, called in
Todd Rambasek,
MD, an allergistimmunologist,
whom Glowski
still sees for weekly treatments.
The doctor administers a very
small dose of the same venom
that set off alarms in Glowski’s
body last summer. At the first
visit, the patient receives a shot
with one-millionth of the target
dose. The doctor doubles the
dose each week until he reaches
the equivalent of two bee stings.
“If you have a severe reaction
to a bee sting and you have a
positive skin or blood test for bee
allergy, then you need bee sting
immunotherapy,” Dr. Rambasek
said. “The treatment is ongoing if
your reaction to the bee sting was
PARMA HOSPITAL CARDIAC CARE
ER doctor experiences own emergency
John Lazo Jr., MD,
reasoned away the winded
weariness he felt after
even brief
sessions
of
yard
work,
chalking
it
up to the
Joseph
Lahorra, MD
heat and
added
weight that had accumulated
through the years.
When scheduled for
an evening shift in Parma
Hospital’s Emergency
Department, this physician
of 33 years, who once
had boundless energy, was
now having to take a nap
before work. Like most
people, the 64-year-old
assumed he was “just getting
older.”
“I didn’t have the energy,
and I didn’t have the
stamina anymore,” said
Lazo. “I thought I was
feeling OK for someone
who was overweight
and out of shape, and I
thought ‘Well, I’m not as
young as I used to be.’ I
was denying the obvious.”
A shopping trip
sealed his fate. One day
at a home improvement
store, after pushing a cart
loaded with lumber all the
way to the checkout, he
arrived beside the cashier
looking ashen. Dizzy and
lightheaded, he called his
wife, Donnalynn.
His next call was to
his cardiologist.
The aortic stenosis
that Gerald Burma, MD
had been monitoring
had now suddenly gotten
markedly worse. The
frequent exhaustion Lazo
had been feeling was the
failure of his aortic valve
to fully open when blood
flows from the heart into
the aorta, the main artery
carrying blood to the rest
of the body.
Lazo definitely had
been feeling more tired
but had never experienced
any chest pain. Nevertheless,
Dr. Burma performed
a cardiac catheterization
that confirmed severe
aortic valve disease and
also discovered an 80 percent
blockage of another
artery. Dr. Lazo was now
“patient Lazo.”
After consultation
with Joseph
Lahorra, MD – a
Cleveland Clinic
Cardiothoracic
surgeon who has
been a member of
Parma Hospital’s
medical staff since
the Heart Center
opened – the surgery
date was set, and the
type of valve replacement
and bypass was determined.
Leading up to his
scheduled surgery date,
Dr. Lahorra warned Lazo
to stay within 30 minutes
of a hospital at all times.
“Aortic stenosis is a
progressive process,” Dr.
Lahorra said. “Once the
narrowing is in the severe
range and symptoms have
developed, patients do not
survive very long without
surgery to replace the
valve. John’s aortic valve
had reached a critical degree
of blockage. He had
arrived at the edge of a
very dangerous precipice
and needed aortic valve
replacement not only to
restore his quality of life
but to preserve his life.”
Lazo spent five days
recovering in the Heart
Center following a surgery
that lasted over six
hours. Specially trained
nurses and doctors gave
him the same personalized,
attentive care that all
their patients receive. His
wife, who had abundant
confidence in Dr. Lahorra
and the staff, said she felt
somewhat guilty at times
that she wasn’t more worried
about the outcome.
They went in with a positive
attitude, focusing on
a future of a growing old
together and enjoying
their grandson.
“I was amazed at how
good I was feeling,” Lazo
“Don’t be in denial. Symptoms need
to be promptly addressed,” said John
Lazo Jr., MD, an Emergency Medicine
physician who explained away the
warning signs of his own worsening
heart condition. “A physician who treats
himself – and ignores his symptoms –
has a fool as a patient.”
recalled. “Even
on the third or
fourth day after
surgery I was
feeling better
than I had before
the surgery.”
Once he had
returned home,
he restricted
his salt intake
and scrutinized
calories in everything
he ate.
He began attending
Cardiac
Rehabilitation, a
supervised exercise
program
for patients who
have had surgery
or a cardiac
event. Now six
months after his
surgery, Lazo
has dropped
more than 38
pounds.
Annual CT
scans will be
done to check
the diameter of Lazo’s
aorta and ensure that
there is no leakage or dissection.
Lazo continues to
take maintenance medications
for high blood pressure
and cholesterol.
And now he’s looking
forward to the warm
weather instead of dreading
it.
“I’m looking forward
to running and playing
with my grandson, now
that I feel I’ve been given
a new lease on life,” Lazo
said.
Symptoms of aortic stenosis include:
• Breathlessness with activity
• Chest pain, including pressure, tightness,
squeezing or crushing
• Pain increases with exercise, relieved with
rest
• Fainting, weakness, or dizziness with activity
A heart attack at 40
On June 16, I had a massive
heart attack and was
rushed to Parma Hospital.
Thank goodness for Parma
Hospital. From the time I hit
the doors until I had two
stents in my heart, it was 16
minutes. The doctor said had
I gone another 10 minutes,
I probably would not have
made it. The hospital was
absolutely fantastic and I
can’t say enough about them
and the care I was given.
Two of Trish Rohman’s six Dachshunds accompany her on her Plain
Dealer delivery route in Broadview Heights. After the 40-year-old
Parma resident suffered a heart attack, she sent a letter to her
customers detailing her positive experience at Parma Hospital.
Cardiac Rehab educates, builds stamina
Establishing an exercise
program after a cardiac event
– whether a heart attack or surgery
– is a major step in returning
to health. And nearly every
patient could benefit.
Specially trained nurses and
exercise specialists assess each
patient’s eligibility and monitor
them through a minimum of 12
weeks of exercise and lifestyle
changes. In this program that
Parma Hospital has operated
for more than 30 years, patients
are advised on nutrition, stress
management and awareness and
reduction of risk factors.
Mary Corrigan of Parma, 84,
began attending Cardiac Rehab
after heart surgery. With the assistance
of an experienced staff,
she doubled the distance she
could walk without strain.
“Research finds that cardiac
rehabilitation is under-utilized
by heart patients, even though
potentially all patients could
benefit,” said James Sechler, MD,
the program’s medical director.
“Patients simply need to ask
their physician for a referral.”
This program is covered by
most insurance plans, including
Medicare. Qualifying conditions
for Cardiac Rehab include:
• Stable Angina (heart pain)
• Heart Attack (MI)
• Heart Bypass Surgery
(CABG)
• Angioplasty/Stenting (PCI)
• Heart Valve Surgery
• Heart Transplantation
Parma Hospital, Jamie Cohen, MD, performed
a diagnostic catheterization, and Bartolomeo
Giannattasio, MD inserted an internal defibrillator
all professionals,” said Popik, who lives in Parma
Heights. “The crew did their job. Without them, I
wouldn’t be here.”
said Spurgeon, 45, and a
In a total laparoscopic
hysterectomy, the uterus
and cervix are removed
through a small incision
in the belly button. Of the
600,000 hysterectomies
performed annually in the
United States, the majority
of these procedures
are still done with a large
abdominal incision.
“If there are any concerns
about malignancies,
we won’t do this procedure,”
says Dr. Dahman,
who has trained other OB/
“But many women can
benefit from it, even those
with fibroid tumors or
endometriosis.”
Dr. Dahman recommends
laparoscopic
surgery for most patients
undergoing hysterectomies.
There is typically
less bleeding and pain
and a decreased risk of
infection with the tiny
incisions made in the
navel and abdomen.
The recovery time
is much shorter and
most women return to
work within two to three
weeks, compared to the
six weeks of recovery
recommended after an
abdominal hysterectomy.
Patients are amazed and
very pleased that the incisions
are barely visible.
Spurgeon was back at
UPS, hiking up 17 steps
to her security office,
only three weeks after
surgery.
“It was a lot better
than I thought,” said
Spurgeon.
Sting from page 3
life-threatening. If it was just a concerning
sting but not life-threatening, therapy
may last for five years.”
Dr. Hickey noted that most people
prone to severe allergic reactions such
as this are unaware. Now, Glowski
never goes anywhere without a doublebarreled
epinephrine pen handy.
“What really rang true for me was
the quality of the health care right here
in our community,” said Mrs. Glowski,
who lives less than four miles from
Parma Hospital.
“We knew we were really, really
blessed with everyone who laid hands
on him during the course of his care.
We really got the best of the best.”
Q&A with
Orest Stecyk, MD
family practice
What services are covered under the
Affordable Care Act?
Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that became law
after the health reform debate, insurance companies
must cover certain preventive services without
charging a copayment or coinsurance. Screenings
such as blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, cholesterol,
colorectal cancer and depression are included, as
well as a one-time screening for abdominal aortic
aneurysms for men with a history of smoking.
What services are covered for women?
Services specific to women include screenings for
breast cancer and cervical cancer as well as anemia,
sexually transmitted diseases and osteoporosis.
Mammograms are covered every 1-2 years after age 40.
Are children covered?
Many services are covered for children, from hearing
screenings for newborns and autism and anemia
screenings for infants to behavioral assessments and
developmental screenings. Children at risk for many
conditions, including lead exposure, obesity and
tuberculosis also are screened.
Are vaccines covered?
Immunizations for adults include influenza,
pneumonia, tetanus, measles/mumps/rubella,
hepatitis A and B, and human papillomavirus (HPV).
Why aren’t more people aware of these
benefits?
The ACA covers many aspects of health care, and
changes are being phased in over time. The coverage
of preventive services just took effect in September
2010, so many people are just learning about it now.
The legislation was intended to eliminate a financial
barrier that could stand between the doctor and
the patient. You can still see your usual doctors, and
these preventive services will be covered if they
are delivered by a provider in your insurance plan’s
network. This law gives patients access to care that
perhaps they did not receive before. As a doctor,
I see this as a wonderful piece of legislation. It will
have a positive impact on public health and individual
health. Now, if you have health insurance you don’t
have to worry about the out-of-pocket cost of
preventive services that can save your life. They’re
just covered, period.
For a complete list of preventive services covered under
the Affordable Care Act, go to www.healthcare.gov.
Losing over 150 pounds and
gaining energy, better health
Pamela Cathy’s plate was
full. From diabetes and failing
kidneys to
high blood
pressure,
severe arthritis
and
sleep apnea,
Craig Eyman,
DO
the Brooklyn
woman had
struggled with health problems
for over a decade.
Then she saw a story
about the Bariatric Center at
Parma Hospital, once again
designated as a Bariatric
Surgery Center of Excellence
by the American Society for
Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery
(ASMBS), which recognizes
surgical programs with a
demonstrated track record of
favorable outcomes in weight
loss surgery.
“I decided I wanted to
have it done myself, because I
had a lot of health problems,”
says Cathy, 42. “What a difference
a year makes! Now I
really feel great.”
Cathy chose the classic
gastric bypass surgery
known as the Roux-en-Y,
the “gold standard” of bariatric
surgery. In this type of
surgery – the most commonly
performed type of bariatric
procedure – a small pouch
is created at the top of the
stomach by stapling across
it and the small intestine is
rerouted. Food consumed
bypasses the remaining
stomach and the first part
of the small intestine. This
results in patients feeling
satisfied on a smaller amount
of food, eating less and
absorbing fewer calories.
In just over a year, Cathy
dropped over 150 pounds. She
now eats three modest meals
per day, walks regularly in
her Brooklyn neighborhood
and doesn’t mind putting on
a swimsuit in the summer.
Her boys, now 3 and 13, are
thrilled with their mother’s
transformation. And her own
mother is happy to lend her
dressy clothes for church,
even if she has to use a few
safety pins to make them fit.
“She’s down to the size
she’s always wanted to be,”
says Cathy’s mother, Gayle
Wilson. “She’s happier, too.”
Bariatric surgery is one
of the most commonly performed
elective abdominal
operations in the country,
with more than 220,000 procedures
performed
each
year. It is recognized
for its
ability to save
lives, providing
remission not
only of obesity,
but a number
of chronic
diseases/comorbidities. By
resolving these comorbidities,
bariatric surgery can dramatically
reduce the primary costs
of obesity.
In Cathy’s case, all her
comorbidities have resolved.
“Our recognition as a
Bariatric Center of Excellence
underscores our commitment
to improving the lives and
well-being of our patients,”
said Craig Eyman, DO, Medical
Director of Parma Hospital’s
Bariatric Center.
Christine Miceli, a physician
assistant with the Bariatric
Center, sees each patient at
post-operative office visits two
weeks, six months and one
year after surgery. Patients
continue to come in annually.
In a recent follow-up with
Cathy, Miceli told the patient
she was doing everything
right – eating small portions,
stopping when she felt full,
and drinking plenty of water.
Regular exercise also keeps
patients on track.
“She’s given it her all and
been perfectly compliant
and achieved success,” Miceli
said. “When weight loss from
bariatric surgery plateaus,
then you have to rely on good
habits.”
Center, attend Weight Loss
Solutions, an informative
free program held the third
Tuesday of each month at
SUMMER 2011 Informed 11

stephanie came in with abdominal pain.
But that wasn’t her number one concern.
No, she was more worried about her best friend, a lovable bulldog that she had to leave outside in the car. And while knowing
this kind of information may not lead us to a diagnosis, we believe it’s absolutely essential to treating a patient right.
It’s why we develop programs like our trend-setting, nationally recognized
Doc at the Door program, where patients are seen by a physician-led team
that includes a nurse, a paramedic and technician typically within 30 minutes
of arrival. In Stephanie’s case, it helped us quickly give her a preliminary diagnosis
and begin ordering testing so we could focus on what was really troubling her:
getting the dog out of the car.
At Parma Community General Hospital, we believe that treating you better
begins with knowing you better.
To us, it’s all vital.
