Who do you think has greater control
of your health, you or your doctor? If you
said your doctor, you may not be aware
of how much of your health status is
in your own hands.
Making smart choices
to eat right, be active
and maintain a healthy
weight may have more
effect on your health
than any medical
professional.
Everyday activities such as walking,
doing yard work and climbing the stairs
contribute to a healthier you. While 30
minutes a day of activity five times a
week is recommended, some activity is
better than none. Increased activity can
strengthen your cardiovascular system,
improve bones and muscles to prevent
falls, and brighten your mood.
Eating right doesn’t come in the form
of a diet with an end date or weight. It’s
a lifestyle. A low-salt, low-fat diet with
plenty of fruits, vegetables and fiber
can actually reduce your age-related
risks of heart disease, diabetes, stroke,
osteoporosis and other chronic diseases.
Finally, if you’re a smoker – stop!
Even ex-smokers tend to live longer than
people who keep smoking.
One last thing – keep washing your
hands. During flu season, good hand
hygiene is the best way to limit the
spread of infection.
