Technology gets personal
When you think of Parma
Hospital, it’s the personalized
care that
sets us
apart.
“Excellent,
personalized
healthcare,”
is in
our mission statement. “Treating
you better begins with knowing
you better” is a phrase used to
describe the more personalized
style of care delivered here.
Our staff focuses on building
relationships with patients and
families when providing medi-
cal treatment for an illness or
injury. We simply believe that’s
how it should be at a community
hospital.
With that said, technology
is an integral part of having high
quality and successful outcomes.
The technology available at Parma
Hospital is often overlooked,
but the investments we’ve made
over the years rival or in some
cases, beat the perceived best in
town. Parma Hospital was the
first hospital in the area to invest
in the technology that allowed
EKGs to be wirelessly transmitted
from EMS squads to the hospital
for patients in the midst of a
heart attack. That advancement
saves lives and in certain cases as
you’ll read in this issue, allows us
the opportunity to open blocked
arteries in 9 minutes.
Our most recent technological
advancement is the addition
of robotic surgery. Robotic
surgery isn’t new to northeast
Ohio, however, Parma Hospital
has the most advanced version
of the da Vinci surgery system.
The clarity, dexterity and minimally
invasive attributes offer
many benefits for patients,
especially better quality of
life. The thing about technology
is that it is often cold and clinical
when talked about. That’s where
you’ll really notice the difference
at Parma Hospital. In launching
this robotic surgery program, it
was imperative that personalized
care be engrained into it. And
that’s possible here, because the
technology is still only the tool.
It’s the physician that operates it,
the same physician that focuses
on getting to know you, the person
and fellow member of the
community.
‘He was healthy and fit’
9-minute heart attack survivor finds reality defies statistics
Nine minutes. That
was the time it took to
open John Gallagher Jr.’s
blocked coronary artery,
spare his heart muscle
and save his life.
But that may not
have been the case if
someone hadn’t called
9-1-1. Or brought him to
the right hospital.
“If you do the simple math, it’s
pretty impressive.”
John Gallagher, Jr.
HEART CENTER PATIENT
Cardiologist Christine
Zirafi, MD, says it’s
critical to recognize the
symptoms of a heart
attack and quickly go the
nearest hospital that can
Parma Community
General Hospital has
once again been named
Cleveland’s hockey team.
Parma Hospital partners
with The Center of Orthopedic
Surgery to form
the Official Medical Team
help you. In Gallagher’s
case, that was Parma
Community General
Hospital.
“You want to go to
the closest facility that
has interventional capabilities,”
says Dr. Zirafi.
“If you’re having
symptoms, don’t think
because you don’t have
any risk factors, it
can’t be heart problems.
Risk factors
aren’t everything.
Always come to the
hospital.”
The absence of risk
factors can fool a person.
Gallagher was a classic
example of this. His
cholesterol was normal,
he had no personal or
family history of heart
problems and he had just
returned to his Independence
office building
from a lunchtime
workout.
Then he collapsed.
“I remember waking
up on the floor,”
says Gallagher, now 65.
Bystanders assisted him
and called an ambulance,
which brought
him to Parma Hospital.
Marymount Hospital,
where he would typically
go as a Cleveland Clinic
patient, does not have a
high-risk catheterization
lab for interventions, and
he would have had to be
taken by helicopter to
another hospital, delaying
his care by precious
minutes.
Parma Hospital’s
Cardiac Catheterization
Lab is recognized regionally
for expediting heart
attack patients. A “Code
STEMI” is called when
Christine Zirafi, MD, has performed the fastest Code STEMI
to date at Parma Hospital – 9 minutes from entering the
The siren song of career change
An evening paramedic
course has been added by
Parma Hospital’s EMS Program
to meet a growing demand for
individuals seeking a career
change.
The hospital’s program,
which has educated nearly
2,000 of the region’s paramedics
and EMTs over the past three
decades, has 15 firefighter/paramedic
instructors with nearly
400 combined years of experience.
PARMA HOSPITAL’S NEW CENTER FOR MINIMALLY INVASIVE AND ROBOTIC SURGERY
New robot debuts in
operating room
The latest version of the
da Vinci surgical platform is
assisting Parma Hospital surgeons
in the operating room.
Parma Hospital’s operating
suite now features the da
Vinci Si robot, a technology
that provides superior visual
clarity of tissue and anatomy
with magnified 3D, high-definition
(HD) image capability.
Carson Wong, MD, FRCSC,
FACS moved from Oklahoma
City to Cleveland to lead
Parma Hospital’s foray into
robot-assisted surgery.
“I came here to deliver
the type of care one would
expect from a large academic
medical center, but in a more
personalized setting,” says Dr.
Wong, medical director of the
Center for Minimally Invasive
and Robotic Surgery at Parma
Hospital. “The da Vinci Si
enables Parma Hospital to
provide the best possible outcomes
and underscores our
commitment to providing the
community access to the latest
advancements in minimally
invasive surgery.”
While da Vinci surgery is
commonly known as robotic
surgery, the surgery is completely
performed by the surgeon.
The surgeon guides the
system from a control console
in the operating room, and the
robotic system translates his
or her hand movements into
minute movements of tiny
instruments that are placed
inside the body.
Benefits for patients
include:
• Less blood loss
• Less pain
• Shorter hospital stay
• Fewer complications
• Faster return to normal
activities
The robot has applications
for a multitude of surgical
disciplines, including urology,
gynecology, general surgery
Robotic GYN surgery
found to be easier,
faster, more appealing
One in three U.S. women
will have a hysterectomy before
the age of 60. Finding an easier
and faster way through the
recovery
than the
traditional six
week sounds
appealing to
women who
Paul Hudock, MD
can’t be out of
commission for that long.
“Traditionally, anytime you
can do something
minimally
invasive,
you’re going to
have less pain,
less risk of
Kristine Pelagalli, MD infection,
less blood loss, a shorter hospital
stay and a quicker return to
normal activity,” says Paul Hudock,
MD, one of two OB-Gyns
who uses the da Vinci Si robot
to assist in the operating room.
“If you’re facing a hysterectomy,
you may want to explore
whether you’re a candidate.”
Da Vinci surgery provides
precise treatment for gynecologic
conditions in a minimally
invasive fashion – through tiny
incisions instead of a long
open incision. The benefits for
patients of a da Vinci approach
include:
• Better clinical outcomes, in
many cases
• Shorter hospital stay & faster
recovery
• Significantly less pain
• Tiny incisions for minimal
scarring
Kristine Pelagalli, MD also
performs robot-assisted laparoscopic
surgery and appreciates
da Vinci Si’s applications for
procedures such as hysterectomies,
or removal of the uterus,
and bariatric surgery. see GYN page 7
“Come to Cleveland”
Over 1,000 miles for prostate surgery, clean slate
Grady Logan of Oklahoma
City doesn’t have
the patience for “watchful
waiting.”
The 59-year-old
mechanical
engineer, whose
father died of
prostate cancer
at 86, had been
keeping an eye
on his serum
prostate specific antigen
(PSA) level and saw it
rising more rapidly than
he knew it should. He
remembered a urologist
who gave an informative
lecture some four years
earlier, accompanied by
testimonials from grateful
patients whose lives he
had saved.
“Dr. Wong is very active in
helping men return to the
quality of life they had before
surgery.”
Grady Logan
PROSTATE SURGERY PATIENT
Now Grady Logan is
one of those men.
Logan was among the
first patients at Parma
Community General
Hospital to benefit from
Carson Wong, MD
robot-assisted laparoscopic
surgery, at the
hands of the medical
director Carson Wong,
MD, FRCSC, FACS.
While new to
Parma Hospital,
Dr. Wong has a
long history as
a nationally recognized
expert
in endourologic,
minimally invasive
and robotic surgery. Dr.
Wong has been ranked
annually by Castle Connolly
Medical Limited
as one of “America’s Top
Doctors” from 2008 to
2011, included in the
Best Doctors of America
2011-12 edition and
is rated in the Top 1
Urology at the University
of Oklahoma and
Medical Director of
the Center for Robotic
Men 50+ Men age 50 and older should
receive a prostate screening annually. African-Americans
and those with a family history of prostate
cancer should be screened every year after the age
of 40.
See a urologist if you are experiencing:
• Frequent urination (day or night)
• Urgent urination
• Straining to urinate or dribbling after urination
• Intermittent or weak urine stream
• Pain or burning during urination
• Inability to completely empty the bladder
Surgery at OU Medical
Center in Oklahoma City
when Logan attended one
of his community health
events. Now a member
of the Medical Staff
at Parma Hospital, he
welcomed Logan’s desire
to come to Cleveland.
“Dr. Wong is very
active in helping men
return to the quality
of life they had before
surgery,” said Logan,
who believes his father’s
quality of life suffered
after undergoing an open
procedure to remove
his prostate. “I was very
impressed with Dr.
Wong during the patient
seminar. There was a
genuine caring he had for
those patients.
“Now, I am the
beneficiary of my
observation.”
No imaging test
can diagnose prostate
cancer. Only a biopsy
performed by a urologist
can determine if cancer
is present. [see Men 50+
sidebar]
“Before routine
serum PSA and digital
rectal examination
(DRE) screening were
implemented in the mid
1980s, the diagnosis
of prostate cancer was
suspect only if it could be
felt by DRE or a patient
presented with disease
that had spread to other
parts of the body,” said
Dr. Wong. “This sensitive
screening tool, while not
Grady Logan of Oklahoma City flew to Cleveland to
undergo robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery with
renowned urologist Carson Wong, MD, FRCSC, FACS.
foolproof, gives urologists
a gauge of a man’s
prostate health.”
“Routine prostate
screening has allowed our
profession to diagnose
cancer at an earlier,
curable stage,” says Dr.
Wong. “Once diagnosed,
each individual needs to
be uniquely addressed
when considering all
available treatment
options.”
Management
options for prostate
cancer include:
• Surgical removal
(open, laparoscopic,
robot-assisted)
• Radiation therapy
(external beam,
brachytherapy, image
modulated radiation
therapy (IMRT),
proton therapy)
• Watchful waiting
• Injections
• Cryotherapy
Logan, who travelled
to Cleveland with
his wife and two grown
daughters, felt Dr. Wong
was direct in setting
realistic expectations. He
was discharged from the
hospital 20 hours after
surgery, requiring no pain
medication stronger than
Tylenol.
He chuckles over his
friends back home that
thought there was only
one renowned place to go
in Cleveland for surgery.
“You only get one
chance to make this operation
right,” Logan said.
“WELL-OILED MACHINE”
Synergistic staff leads to great
Rehab outcomes
Enthusiastic staff, an
attractive unit and strong
leaders – those are just
some of the compliments
the accrediting body had
for Parma Hospital’s Acute
Rehabilitation Center on
a recent visit. And they
didn’t have a “Welcome
Back” sign waiting for
them.
Greg Masevice sailed
so strongly through his
recovery from an anterior
cervical discectomy with
interbody fusion, for neck
pain, spinal stenosis and
cervical myelopathy that
he wonders why he put it
off so long.
“I’m a 57-year-old
scaredy-cat,” says the
retired police dispatcher
who has struggled with
cerebral palsy throughout
his life and aggravated a
spine injury last fall. He
was stabilized in the Rehab
Unit and returned this
spring for neck surgery
with Steven Fulop, MD.
“If I can do this, anyone
can!”
The Acute Rehabilitation
Center provides
comprehensive physical
and cognitive rehabilitation
to return patients
to independent living at
their highest possible level
of functioning following
strokes, joint replacements,
hip/femur fractures,
amputations, spinal
cord injuries and other
neurological diagnoses.
The unit received another
three-year accreditation
from The Commission on
Accreditation of Rehabilitation
Facilities (CARF),
plus special recognition of
its stroke program during
this voluntary, rigorous
review.
“I’ve never seen such
a well-oiled working
machine in all my life,” said
Masevice, who was greeted
with a “Welcome Back
Gregory” banner in April
when he was recovering
from surgery. “The people
there treated me royally.
They all worked together.”
In its detailed survey,
CARF cited several
strengths for the Acute
Rehabilitation Center,
including:
• A strong, cohesive
interdisciplinary team
of nursing, therapy
services and physicians
who embrace a culture
of accountability and
are eager to learn best
practices. “They are
enthusiastic and synergistic,
which provides
for great outcomes,” the
report said.
• A dedicated program
director, who is
respected by staff and
hospital leadership.
• Strong, supportive and
knowledgeable corporate
leadership.
• An attractive, well-appointed
unit conducive
to an optimal rehabilitation
experience.
• A supportive organization
that itself has
received many awards.
The surveyors paid
special note of the medical
directors – Cynthia Taylor,
Radiation Therapy:
Advanced care,
right here at home
Vincent Lee, MD
Radiation Oncologist
For prostate, breast and lung cancer, radiation therapy
has emerged to become a powerful weapon with
several advantages. It’s often used in combination
with surgery and/or chemotherapy. Other times, it is
preferred over other treatments like surgery, because
it can avoid certain side effects while still providing
curative therapy.
Many other cancers are treated effectively with
radiation. Every person is different, and the only
way to find out if radiation therapy is right for you,
is from a thorough discussion with a Radiation
Oncologist. That’s where I come in.
I have been recently diagnosed with cancer, and
am curious to know if radiation therapy can help
me. Can I call for an appointment for a discussion?
Learning about a cancer diagnosis is often
challenging. Having an informed discussion about
all appropriate treatment options and their potential
side effects is not only important – it’s your right. The
latest advancements in radiation therapy mean it
is often a preferred choice for patients looking for
effective treatment with minimal side effects. Please
call our Cancer Center to discuss whether radiation
therapy is a good option for you.
I have been informed that I need radiation
therapy. Can I have it done closer to home, at
Parma Hospital?
Yes, our Cancer Center has advanced technology,
including Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT),
so there’s no need to go anywhere else. We also have
been accredited to offer clinical trials – the same ones
being offered at places like Harvard and MD Anderson
– through the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.
What are some other benefits to coming to Parma?
Because we take good care of you. I wouldn’t be able
an EKG indicates they are having an
ST-Elevated Myocardial Infarction, or
heart attack. This call readies the Cath
Lab team for a heart attack patient
who is en route – another benefit to
calling for an ambulance rather than
getting a ride from a family member
or neighbor.
Hospitals have been exceeding
the national standard of 90 minutes
for door-to-balloon time (D2B time),
measured from the moment the
patient comes through the Emergency
Department doors to the minute the
balloon opens the blocked artery
(angioplasty) in the Cath Lab. Parma
Hospital’s average D2B time this year
is 56 minutes, with routine D2B times
of 14, 15 and 17 minutes recorded.
Gallagher’s door-to-balloon time
was 9 minutes.
“If you do the simple math, it’s pretty
impressive,” said Gallagher, who lives in
Broadview Heights and spent just one
night in the Heart Center after his catheterization.
“It was a good experience.
Everybody was extremely nice.”
Recognizing the warning signs,
no matter how otherwise healthy you
have been, can save your life.
“He was healthy and fit,” said Dr.
Zirafi. “And yet he recognized what
was going on and got help.”
