Invest in your health
with us
2013 is going to be a significant year
in health care. Health care reform is
moving full speed ahead and Parma
Hospital is moving right along with it.
A major electronic health record
initiative goes live this spring and while
this investment may not be as obvious
to the eye as a new construction project with cranes
erecting steel beams, know that it is a sizeable
investment in how we will deliver even better and
safer care.
We’ve also invested in better access and
convenience for you with our new Outpatient
Center. This facility is specifically designed for
outpatient testing and procedures, where you
can get “in and out” of your appointment quicker,
and with closer parking than coming to the main
hospital.
Your patient experience and satisfaction are
important to us, too. See in our cover story of
this issue how we’ve invested in creating private,
modern rooms for our joint replacement patients in
support of our signature orthopedic services.
We continue to make your community hospital
the best, most convenient and most personalized
place for you to receive your care. I encourage
you to invest in becoming a healthier person and
community in 2013 – and if you need some help
along the way to do so, we’re here and ready.
Forecast: Sunny days, blue skies after new hip
Well-known weatherman
Brad Sussman looked forward to
his hip replacement with sheer
enthusiasm, knowing he faced a
faster recovery than he had following
a joint replacement nine
years ago.
Seeking the least invasive option
possible, Sussman chose Dr.
Larry Lika of Southwest Orthopaedics
for the anterior approach to
minimally invasive hip replacement.
“I was blown away by the difference,”
said Sussman, whose
first hip replacement nearly a decade
ago had been state-of-theart
at the time. “This is absolutely
the way to go.”
In 20 years of practice, Dr.
Lika has had many patients who
have experienced the posterior
approach on one hip and the
anterior approach on the other
side. With the anterior approach,
the surgeon reaches the hip from
the front of the joint between
two muscles, rather than cutting
4
through muscle and reattaching
it. The hip ball and socket are
removed and replaced, through
small incisions, limiting post-operative
discomfort.
“Minimally invasive doesn’t just
mean a smaller incision,” says Dr.
Lika. “It also means that you’re
not destroying all the muscle and
tissue below it, which is where the
pain comes in.”
Sussman was standing and
walking the day after surgery and
went home from Parma Hospital
three days later.
“There is a day and night difference,”
says Dr. Lika, whose
patients come to the office two
weeks after surgery without a
cane or a walker.
Parma Hospital’s Joint Camp
from the Joint Commission. For a
Therapy strengthens new hips
Less than three weeks after surgery to replace
his hip, Brad Sussman was cycling on a
stationary bike and doing squats and side leg
raises.
While these exercises took place under the
watchful eye of physical therapist Mike Scharf,
they would have been difficult to even imagine
doing so soon after his first hip replacement, a
traditional surgery over nine years earlier.
Physical therapy with trained specialists is
advised to ensure proper post-surgical care of
the new joint. As patients who have undergone
a traditional
hip replacement
can
attest, they
must be very
could dislocate the new hip.
“With the anterior approach, the
therapists can be much more aggressive
in rehab, because you don’t
have to worry about dislocation,” says
orthopedic surgeon Larry Lika, DO.
“The muscles have not been disturbed.”
“You will never fully get your function
back without physical therapy,”
Scharf said. “Patients really don’t
know where to start on their own,
or they can develop other problems
by performing exercises the wrong
way.
“Our brain is smart and finds
ways to compensate and avoid
pain. Therapists are trained to help
patients work through that and
exercise safely.”
sessions in the facility adjacent
The changes in Shirley Harnest’s
89-year-old father were subtle. But
his inexplicable mental confusion
and suddenly shaky health status
were enough for an attentive daughter
to notice.
Cases like Bill Masek’s are the
specialty of the Geriatric Assessment
program at Parma Hospital. A
physician-led team of professionals
provides a thorough evaluation of
older patients to establish a baseline
of daily functionality. Then they refer
families to support services and appropriate
medical care.
“He would have moments of being
really clear and then lapse into
this fog,” said Harnest. “He wasn’t
eating properly or taking his pills like
he should. I wanted to get him evaluated
by a geriatric specialist to see if
there were underlying problems.”
A detailed assessment covers the
patient’s physical, mental and social
wellness. Blood work and other tests
may be ordered. The geriatric team,
including the doctor, nurse and
social worker, then meets with the
family to discuss their findings.
Referrals may be made to other
programs and services, including the
Beyond Driving with Dignity driver
evaluation program through Parma
Evaluating elderly loved ones
Hospital’s ElderCenter.
In Masek’s case, a medication he
was taking contributed to his compromised
state. He is now under the
care of Dr. Gorjanc, an internal medicine
doctor with a focus on geriatrics.
He passed his driving evaluation
and has returned to his Parma home,
aided by a medical alert system that
will notify his family and a response
team in case of emergency.
Reasons for a geriatric assessment
may include but are not limited to:
Decline in physical abilities
Unexplained changes in behavior
Falls and trouble with balance
Signs of memory loss
Depression or anxiety
Medication concerns
. Concerns about driving safety
“Everybody was very nice, helpful
and caring towards an older person,”
said Harnest. “It’s a great program
that can provide you with a lot of
information and resources. It makes
me feel a little more comfortable
that we’re doing the right thing.”
Trust your heart
to the top
Beverly Bennett knew in her
heart she was in the best hospital in
Cuyahoga County.
Parma Hospital has been
recognized as the top hospital in the
county for coronary interventions
and cardiology services by
HealthGrades, the nation’s leading
quality rankings firm. In fact, for two
years in a row HealthGrades has
named Parma Hospital among the
100 Best Hospitals in the nation –
and among the Top Five in Ohio for
the past five years – for coronary
intervention. Parma Hospital also
ranked among the top hospitals in
the state for overall cardiac services.
“It’s just an ideal location,” said
Bennett, a Cleveland resident
whose cardiac condition has been
monitored regularly by cardiologist
James Sechler, MD at Cardiovascular
Clinic, a large cardiology practice
with an office in Parma Hospital’s
Medical Arts Center 3.
When Bennett’s valve disease
required surgery, she chose
cardiothoracic surgeon Joseph
Lahorra, MD, who replaced her
aortic valve and repaired a leaking
mitral valve. She recovered in
Parma Hospital’s Heart Center,
where patients stay in the same
unit from surgery through
discharge.
There are many reasons to
choose Parma Hospital’s Heart
Center, including excellent intraoperative
and post-operative
outcomes and lower complication
rates than national benchmarks.
“All the people were just great,”
said Bennett, who enjoyed visits
during her stay in the Heart Center
from her daughter and son-in-law,
who are legally blind, and their
seeing-eye dog. “They made you
feel comfortable and they made
you feel at home. You couldn’t
get better care.”
Beverly Bennett, pictured
Manager Michelle Adams,
RN, said the staff felt like
family.
Robotic GYN
Surgery
Paul Hudock, MD
Department OF OB-GYN
What is special about robotic surgery?
Parma Hospital has the latest version of
the surgical platform for robotic surgery.
Robotic surgery is a tool to provide the
best minimally invasive options that translate
into shorter hospital stays, less pain,
less blood loss and lower risk of infection.
What types of gynecologic surgeries can
be performed?
Most procedures, particularly hysterectomies
(removal of the uterus), oophorectomies
(removal of ovaries) and myomectomies
(surgical removal of fibroid tumors
that leaves the uterus intact), are now
being performed robotically. We can also
perform robotic surgery for endometriosis,
pelvic organ prolapse and tubal ligation.
Remember, the surgeon is still doing
the surgery, but they operate by controlling
the robot.
Does it improve my recovery in any way?
Recovery is quite a bit faster for patients
who choose this minimally invasive option.
The incisions are tiny and less tissue
is disrupted, making the healing process
smoother. All of my da Vinci patients have
successfully been discharged without
needing any narcotic pain medication.
Patients leave the hospital sooner, which
translates into a quicker return to normal
activities.
Are there cases when robotic surgery is
not advisable?
Cases that involve severe pelvic adhesions
or particularly large tumors are not
recommended to be done robotically. Talk
to your doctor about your specific case.
Two gynecologists are trained in robotic
surgery. Call to make an appointment.
Going Strong…
James Sechler, MD, Cardiologist
Beverly Bennett
Heart survivor
Michelle Adams, RN
Manager, Heart Center
Parma Hospital proudly celebrates 10 years of supporting the American Heart Association’s Go Red movement because
of patients like Beverly Bennett.
Beverly had the reassurance that she was in good hands when her cardiologist informed her she needed surgery on two
heart valves. She put her heart in the hands of Parma Hospital – named the best in Cuyahoga County for cardiology
services and coronary interventions by HealthGrades. Her recovery included
a strong dose of personalized care and the benefits of our cardiac
rehabilitation program.
Now she’s going strong – and Going Red!
