Agency Performance – Report on Operations<br />

Directorate Reports<br />

Community Engagement Directorate continued<br />

Perth Zoo continues to look for ways to reduce<br />

its environmental footprint. Projects completed<br />

in 2011-12 or underway are expected to provide<br />

further improvements in the areas <strong>of</strong> energy,<br />

water and waste management. Actions and<br />

achievements in 2011-12 are detailed below.<br />

Energy<br />

• Harnessed solar energy to produce<br />

renewable energy onsite, generating around<br />

5% <strong>of</strong> the Zoo’s electricity needs from<br />

solar power.<br />

• Completed the majority <strong>of</strong> the work on the<br />

second and final stage <strong>of</strong> the Zoo’s solar<br />

energy project.<br />

• Purchased 10% <strong>of</strong> its grid electricity as<br />

‘Natural Power’ which is guaranteed to come<br />

from accredited renewable energy suppliers<br />

in <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>.<br />

• Installed high-efficiency LED lights at the<br />

Zoo Shop.<br />

• Initiated research on the use <strong>of</strong> pump speed<br />

controllers to reduce energy consumption<br />

associated with water pumping.<br />

Water<br />

• Awarded the Bronze certificate as part <strong>of</strong><br />

the Water Corporation’s Water Efficiency<br />

Management Program (April 2012) for<br />

achieving a 10-25% improvement in water<br />

efficiency since the program began in 2007.<br />

• Commenced design work on an $11.9m<br />

Integrated Water Management Project to<br />

replace ageing water infrastructure and<br />

provide further improvements in water<br />

efficiency over the next five years. This is the<br />

largest capital project ever undertaken by<br />

Perth Zoo.<br />

• Installed additional water flow meters to help<br />

manage water demand for our major water<br />

bodies including the main lake.<br />

• Installed data loggers on water flow meters<br />

to improve water management across the<br />

Zoo. This new technology will provide the<br />

Zoo with an understanding <strong>of</strong> how it uses<br />

water every 15 minutes, help find water leaks<br />

and identify consumption patterns.<br />

Waste and Materials<br />

• Conducted a compost trial to investigate<br />

options for improving organic waste<br />

management onsite.<br />

• Added a new battery recycling facility.<br />

Batteries used by Perth Zoo are now<br />

centrally collected and transported to an<br />

eastern states recycling plant where they are<br />

cut up to have their components reclaimed,<br />

with the remaining materials disposed<br />

<strong>of</strong> responsibly.<br />

• Continued to recycle plastics, paper,<br />

cardboard, aluminium cans, batteries, scrap<br />

metal, green waste and soil.<br />

• Sourced raw materials sustainably where<br />

possible with 100% recycled timber used in<br />

the new <strong>Australia</strong>n Wetlands boardwalk.<br />

• Appointed Perth Waste to provide an<br />

integrated waste management service.<br />
