Community Engagement Directorate continued<br />

In addition, new research partnerships with the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong> and Monash<br />

University were used to further develop the<br />

Zoo’s understanding <strong>of</strong> community awareness<br />

and attitudes in this area.<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> a new partnership, Perth Zoo was<br />

included in the Nature Play WA Passport<br />

produced by the Department <strong>of</strong> Sport and<br />

Recreation. <strong>The</strong> passport encourages families<br />

with children to venture outdoors to explore<br />

and appreciate the natural environment. Perth<br />

Zoo’s Global Safari activity in the passport<br />

encourages families to visit the Zoo and<br />

explore various animals from around the world.<br />

Over 40,000 Nature Play WA Passports have<br />

already been distributed to families throughout<br />

<strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>.<br />

Perth Zoo joined Scitech Discovery Centre<br />

in extending its services to regional <strong>Western</strong><br />

<strong>Australia</strong> through the Science Awareness<br />

Festival. Perth Zoo staff presented curriculumlinked<br />

learning programs for school students<br />

and community family-oriented activities in<br />

Albany, as well as teacher pr<strong>of</strong>essional learning<br />

sessions in Albany and Bunbury. <strong>The</strong> program<br />

also travelled to outer metropolitan areas with<br />

Zoo staff joining Scitech at its Shopping Trolley<br />

Science Festival at Armadale Shopping Centre.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Zoo to You speakers program expanded<br />

its reach significantly in 2011-12 with a team<br />

<strong>of</strong> 10 Perth Zoo Docents delivering 78 <strong>of</strong>f-site<br />

educational talks (59 last year) to 2,460 people.<br />

<strong>The</strong> program now includes presentations at<br />

corporate groups, in addition to Rotary and<br />

Probus Clubs, libraries, senior citizens’ centres,<br />

retirement villages and special interest groups.<br />

Perth Zoo’s 13th annual <strong>Australia</strong>-wide Tiwest<br />

Night Stalk ran from 1 September 2011 to<br />

16 October 2011. This community education<br />

program aims to raise public awareness <strong>of</strong> local<br />

wildlife and their habitats through nocturnal<br />

spotlight surveys with participants recording<br />

and reporting animals they see. A total <strong>of</strong> 1025<br />

participants from across <strong>Australia</strong> completed<br />

54 surveys in 2011. Each state except South<br />

<strong>Australia</strong> was represented with the majority <strong>of</strong><br />

surveys completed in <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>. <strong>The</strong><br />

Biological Data Recording System (BDRS) was<br />

introduced in 2011 enabing electronic reporting<br />

<strong>of</strong> animals recorded on night stalks. <strong>The</strong> BDRS<br />

was available for participants to log into via the<br />

Perth Zoo website.<br />

Perth Zoo also worked with Free the Bears<br />

Fund and the Freeland Foundation running the<br />

Paws for Thought international conservation art<br />

program to generate student awareness and<br />

interest in threatened mammals from <strong>Western</strong><br />

<strong>Australia</strong> and Thailand. <strong>The</strong> Sun Bear was the<br />

focus for <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n students while<br />

students in Thailand focused on the Numbat<br />

and Chuditch, as well as the Sun Bear.<br />

Over 190 conservation banners were created<br />

by students in <strong>Western</strong> <strong>Australia</strong>n schools.<br />

In Thailand, students in rural and urban areas<br />

produced 50 conservation banners. <strong>The</strong>se are<br />

displayed in Thailand and will be shown at Perth<br />

Zoo in 2012.<br />

Participation in on-site education programs<br />

has remained fairly consistent over the past<br />

three years with 58,616 participants in 2011-12<br />

(58,203 last year). <strong>The</strong> most popular activities<br />

included the Bush Party and Feathers, Fur, Skin<br />

and Scales early childhood programs, the Save<br />

Our Species early adolescence program and<br />

the Zoo Camp experience.<br />
