Agency Performance – Report on Operations<br />
Directorate Reports<br />
Corporate and Commercial Development Directorate continued<br />
• Painted Dog Conservation Inc for an African<br />
Painted Dog anti-snaring unit in South<br />
Luangwa National Park, Zambia, and a<br />
conservation education outreach program<br />
for school children in South Luangwa.<br />
<strong>The</strong> anti-snaring unit removes snares and<br />
apprehends suspected poachers, as well as<br />
rescuing trapped dogs and other wildlife.<br />
• Silvery Gibbon Project for a project<br />
coordinator for the Global Cooperative<br />
Management Program for the endangered<br />
Javan (Silvery) Gibbon.<br />
• Free the Bears Fund for the protection<br />
and mapping <strong>of</strong> wild populations <strong>of</strong> Sun<br />
Bears and Asiatic Black Bears in Cambodia<br />
and Laos.<br />
• Tenkile Conservation Alliance for the<br />
conservation <strong>of</strong> tree kangaroos in the Torricelli<br />
Mountain Range in Papua New Guinea.<br />
• Asian Rhino Project to support conservation<br />
work with the critically endangered<br />
Sumatran Rhinoceros including population<br />
estimates, genetic pr<strong>of</strong>iling and sex ratios in<br />
Bukit Barisan Selatan National Park and Way<br />
Kambas National Park in Indonesia.<br />
• <strong>Australia</strong>n Wildlife Conservancy to support<br />
the translocation <strong>of</strong> Greater Stick Nest Rats<br />
from Mount Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary to<br />
Faure Island Sanctuary.<br />
• Recovery work with the critically endangered<br />
<strong>Western</strong> Ground Parrot.<br />
In 2011-12, WCA raised a further $305,874<br />
through a range <strong>of</strong> activities including the<br />
sale <strong>of</strong> merchandise, donations and cross<br />
promotions. Funds raised in 2011-12 will be<br />
allocated in 2012-13.<br />
Perth Zoo welcomed a new sponsor during<br />
2011-12, Koast Tyres Pty Limited.<br />
Policy and Administration<br />
<strong>The</strong>re was a continued focus on goods<br />
and services procurement processes with<br />
a comprehensive agency spend analysis<br />
completed during the year. Twelve new<br />
agency-specific contracts and new targets<br />
for ongoing contract development have been<br />
developed resulting in operational efficiencies.<br />
Procurement training continues to be a focus<br />
to ensure that all purchases made for the Zoo<br />
are compliant with policy and procedures and<br />
that contracts are managed to yield maximum<br />
benefit for the Zoo.<br />
<strong>The</strong> development and implementation <strong>of</strong><br />
Perth Zoo’s Customer Management and<br />
Ticketing System continued in 2011-12 with<br />
the introduction <strong>of</strong> on-line donations on the<br />
Zoo’s website in June 2012. Work began<br />
on the next development stage – on-line<br />
admissions ticketing.<br />

<strong>The</strong> first stage <strong>of</strong> a project to audit Perth<br />
Zoo’s construction drawings and plans was<br />
completed. This project will provide a significant<br />
improvement in storage and access to drawings<br />
and plans.<br />
Information management was enhanced<br />
with the development and implementation<br />
<strong>of</strong> a new policy and related guidelines for<br />
information systems management which will<br />
act as a control against possible risks to the<br />
organisation’s information systems.<br />
Corruption Prevention<br />
<strong>The</strong> Zoo has a comprehensive risk<br />
management program and addresses<br />
corruption and misconduct issues as part <strong>of</strong><br />
an annual sectional risk assessment process.<br />
Since 2005, the Zoo has been progressively<br />
implementing actions flowing from an original<br />
assessment <strong>of</strong> fraud and corruption risks.<br />
Actions in 2011-12 included:<br />
• review and updates to the Gifts and<br />
Hospitality Policy including a new registration<br />
form with a record <strong>of</strong> gift decisions<br />
• comprehensive risk assessment <strong>of</strong> fraud<br />
and corruption<br />
• review and updates <strong>of</strong> financial and<br />
procurement procedure manuals<br />
• ongoing procurement training for all <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />
with delegated procurement authority
